A few underwate shots

These were taken with a Canon A570 IS in a Canon underwater housing on my trip to St Maarten. The camera had (I somehow screwed it up) the CHDK "firmware" which adds a LOT of additional features, including RAW. WB is still an issue, since it's really tough to know what is really white underwater. The water wasn't quite what you'd consider clear, so there's a bit of backscatter in the flash shots. Anyway, here they are.

The Lobster:

Follow the Leader:

I got crabs:

Series of 4 shots:

Nice sand:

Wait a Sec:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68088083@N00/2773328304/" title="Uh oh! I think you see me (2 of 4) by MoeRonn, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3276/2773328304_c4128df237.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Uh oh! I think you see me (2 of 4)" /></a>

Oh crap, you saw me:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/68088083@N00/2772480657/" title="Know I know you see me (3 of 4) by MoeRonn, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3022/2772480657_6fa4f53da8.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Know I know you see me (3 of 4)" /></a>

I'm outta here:

WOW! Super cool stuff!

Love the ray progression.

The first shot actually has TWO lobsters in it.

Cool shots!
I wish I could get an underwater housing for my D300. Except I'm not going to pay three thousand dollars for one.

Thanks.

And there was only one there when we left.

j/k - no taking anything out of the water.

Thanks.

I was originally thinking about getting an u/w housing for the 30D, but cost and dive experience steered me toward the cheaper and less cumbersome alternative for now. MAYBE afer I get a new body down the road, I might pick up a housing for the 30D. A strobe or two will come before then, though.

Definitely. With water temp of 84 degrees at depth and nice, varried life down below, it's always a good time. Unfortunately, I tend to leave the camera on the boat for my fist dives of a trip - which of course is when we saw the sea turtles.

Nice! Did you have to do anything specific to get the decent white balance you achieved? I've read that a blue cast is almost unavoidable with underwater work unelss you take steps to manually correct the WB.

I tried using the Underwater setting on the camera, but that didn't do much. Most of the correction was in LR. Changed the color temp to around 15k and bumped the tint all the way to the right on most of the shots. When using external stobes, you can usually get things looking fairly "natural" SOOC.
