I was just curious if anyone has ever had a particular image change their mind on a specific topic or issue. Or perhaps you were "on the fence" about something and a specific image pushed you one way or another.

Mine is pretty (go figure).
I used to be convinced that humans were the only intelligent life in the universe. Then on January 15, 1996 this image was released and I changed my mind completely after reading the details behind it.

Can't recall an image being a deciding factor in anything; however, it's plausible.

And on sharing the details.

As the title on the bottom says, the image is the (original) Hubble Deep Field that was taken in 1995 and released in 1996. Here's some relevant press release text:

Representing a narrow "keyhole" view stretching to the visible horizon of the universe, the HDF image covers a speck of the sky only about the width of a dime located 75 feet away. Though the field is a very small sample of the heavens, it is considered representative of the typical distribution of galaxies in space because the universe, statistically, looks largely the same in all directions. Gazing into this small field, Hubble uncovered a bewildering assortment of at least 1,500 galaxies at various stages of evolution.

This was followed up in 2003/2004 with the Hubble Utlra Deep Field that was taken after the instruments on the telescope unerwent a major upgrade. Key press release text from the HUDF:

The HUDF field contains an estimated 10,000 galaxies. In ground-based images, the patch of sky in which the galaxies reside (just one-tenth the diameter of the full Moon) is largely empty.
Now keep in mind that each one of the galaxies visible in these images contains several (if not 10's or 100's) of billions of stars. Now multiply that out over the entire celectial sphere and not just one tiny patch of sky in one direction.

You can link back to the full press releases from those pages.

You know our galaxi is pretty recent compared to all other. So if there is life out there, chances are more that the species will be way way more intelligent than humans, looking at the evolution theories.

Fighting the urge to take my own thread even further off topic is currently pretty painful.

I can bet my life there are other life forms out there. We just can't find them.

Or should I say they can't find us.

On topic: This is a question that requires a lot of thinking back. Give me time, I'll reply once I have an answer.

yea I pretty always thought there was life out there. I mean, how can't there be? The Earth and our population here is like, a grain of a grain of a grain of a grain of sand in the universe, compared to everything else.
