7/30/08 - I will be shooting Canon two EOS 1Ds MKIIIs, Three Canon EOS1D MKIIIs, and a 5D - I will mix the 1Ds and 1D Cameras back and forth between my shooting camera and high-res remote cameras - depending on the sport and how many frames per second you need (the high resolution body (1Ds) is slightly slower. I make sure to enter all custom functions BEFORE I leave... waiting until you get there is a big mistake. I'm also bringing more than 100 GB of Lexar high speed UDMA cards to feed these monster (close to 20 CF cards) as I'll be shooting everything in RAW - withouth exception. Photo ©Vincent Laforet

That's what I was thinking.
Like I said, I wouldn't even know how to utilize all of the cameras.

Why does he need that much gear? Seems like ridiculous overkill to me, but I am teh noob and thus don't know what I am talking about.
Can anyone explain why someone would need that much gear (ex why does he need 6 bodies?????)?

Those are long telephoto lenses. Sports or wildlife shooters might use those to bring the action in close. I believe the longest telephoto in Canon's lineup, the EF 800 f/5.6L, prices in at around $12K.

And if your memory card is getting full, you just quickly swap cameras, rather than
messing around getting/loading a new card. In the pro world, getting THE exact moment is critical.

1 D's hold two cards, CF and SD, though a reason. Man I'd love to be the assistant (bitch) for this trip.

Also 3 of those cameras are remotes - he's physically using the other 3. Hell wedding and other pro event photographers usually sport 2-3 around their neck. 3 bodies for the Olympics almost seems like not enough lol.

Those photos are AMAZING! I'd love the opportunity (and equipment!) to shoot those scenes. So, so jealous.

Staff photographer Bob Rosato's collection of gear is fairly typical. To a football game he takes four or five EOS-1D bodies and 600mm f/4, 400mm f/2.8, 300mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, and 50mm f/1.4 lenses.

The 50 1.4 is awesome. Even though the focal length can be a bit awkward on crop bodies, it's by far the sharpest lens I own. Scary sharp. I need to use it more.
