Dealing with Severe CA

For some reason, I get some really severe CA with my 85mm 1.8 when wide open. Stopping down might reduce it, but then what's the point of the 1.8, right?

I thought it would be an easy fix in Lightroom, but I haven't been able to get the CA to be reduced to an acceptable level.

Here's an example (SOOC other than resize) from this past weekend at Disneyland. Both Mickey and the pyrotechnics have quite a bit of purple finging:

How, if possible, do you get rid of it?

Oh. Sorry.

Have you tried reducing the purple saturation and vibrance sliders?

How's this?

I'm on a very slow internet connection here in cottage country, but I'll type a how-to and reply shortly...

Edit: Ok for some reason it won't let me log out as Street Spirit, but this is Dan if you couldn't guess.

The real trick to local CA control is to use the clone tool set to "color". Then you can sample a clean area of the photo near where the CA is, and paste the cloned color over the CA. It works really well and it's very quick.

The conditions in the photo you posted are about as extreme as you'll have for CA. It's actually CA plus sensor bloom you're seeing here.

That definitely looks better, though
it still looks a bit purple on Mickey and at the fringes of the fireworks (left-bottom and right). Still, a substantial improvement. Very interested to learn what you did and hopefully it's something I can do with LR.

Admittedly, it's a rough job, but it was just a "proof-of-concept" edit and it took less than a minute. With a little more time, you can clean it up completely.

You won't be able to do it in Lightroom unfortunately, because lightroom doesn't have a fully-functional clone tool. You Photoshop CS3 (or any other version of Photoshop for that matter) because your local editing in Lightroom is very limited. The only tool you need is the clone tool set to color mode instead of normal .

Heh... looks like your internet connection is faster than my interruption by phone call.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to check if PSP has a similar tool. One of these days I'll plunk down the cash for PS, but for pics like these, I still can't justify it.

Is this sorta like "Coping with an STD"

In LR in the develop module...down at the very bottom are setting for correcting/offsetting CA...have you played with that yet?

This isn't D&R and I'm not WILDDOGS

I tried the CA sliders in LR and they don't seem to do squat.

Looking at the local adjustments in LR2, it looks like there should be a way to do this, but I haven't been able to figure out the right settings yet.
