Conrad, great image, a little wash out on the right cheek, but.... Great background to use to enhance her eyes.

^ Thanks! It doesn't look washed out on my monitor. Although, I do tend to have my images bright, so it might be on the borderline and could sway either way on different monitors.

You can get similar effects with either. Both use reflective only light to illuminate the subject. The beauty dish also gives a softer light. I believe it comes down to how the catch eye lights look. The beauty dish has a nice round circle. The ring light kinda looks like a donut.

How close were you to her and about where and how far away (from her) was the beauty dish? (sorry, I'm a total noob with lighting )

Usually the lighting is kind of close but still out of the image and the photographer is further away.

Iirc the photographer needs to be further away to prevent distortion from shorter focal lengths as well as distortion from being too close.

What Miz said.

Beauty dish was about 1.5 feet from her. I had my 50mm on so I was about 4-5 feet away.

I did do some post on her skin, but I tried not to over do it.

I'm guessing about 1.5 feet or maybe 2 feet. If you were to sit down, the beauty dish and stand would be a few inches from your knees (distance wise, not actual location )

What was the height of the dish relative to her head, and did you need to independently light the background at all?

From the looks of the shadows and catchlights in her eyes, the beautydish was up high on the right side of the model.

Also depending on what you want to do, you don't have to light the background. I think you expose for the ambient and then let the flash illuminate the subject.

Man it's been a while since I did anything like that, it was kind of fun.

I might have to stop by the .99 store later to buy some stuff and see if I can put together a "beauty dish".

So, so far I've gone to Walmart, Target, Big Lots and the .99 Store and can't find a white plastic bowl to make a "beauty dish"

btw, doesn't Danielle look kinda like Katie Holmes?

Home Depot. I forgot what it was called but its that part that goes under a flower/plant part. Kinda like a tray/dish. It's plastic.

Not white. They're all transparent. I'll probably just get whatever and either spray paint or plastidip it white.

I'll try Home Depot
