Canon Close Up Lens 1100 72mm

So i found a "canon close up lens 72mm 1100" sitting in one of my parents drawers. Apparently someone gave it to my dad a while back and its been sitting since then. Ive been looking into getting a SLR, mind you i know nothing about photography, just trying to get started. My questions is if this thing is any good. How much is it worth? is it worth starting with this thing? or should i get rid of it?

edit: by the way, i cant find any info on this thing, not even a pick. The things about 7 inches long, it has a ~1 inch metal base piece and it has three sections that rotate. One read numbers in ft and meters ranging from 5 ft to 50 (1.5 m - 15m). The second one only read numbers (95, 50, 25, 16.5). And the last one read 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 and Close...

It sounds like it's just an add-on lens for something. Could you take a pic of it?

Ok, so it's probably a zoom lens with a diopter added on the end for close-up work. It's got to be a really old lens if it has a manual aperture ring (the one with 2, 2.8, 4, etc.). It's not something you're going to use if you get a DSLR these days though.

also, the metal base piece is the end that screws into the camera and the first rotating piece has a metal piece sticking out that i assume is used to more accurately focus on something...

Ya, the first ring is the focusing ring, and that little metal tab that is sticking out is used to line up with the markings on the body of the lens to determine the focusing distance and sometimes depth of field. The second ring is the zoom ring. I haven't heard of a 16.5mm to 95mm zoom, but that's what it sounds like it is based on your description. The third ring (closest to the mount) is the aperture control. If you turn it, you'll see the iris of the lens will close up. This controls how much light will be transmitted to the film.

Try to take a pic somehow. I'm very curious what you have here!

I think I found what you've got: http://www.banoptical.com/CCTV%20sub..._tv_zoom_1.htm

It's a TV lens, not a photo lens. I have no idea if there's a collector's market for these things...

Considering it's the first time I've ever heard of one, it's either very rare and worth a lot, or it's completely useless and nobody wants it.

Either way, let us know what you find.
