what on earth????????? I would *NEVER* think about using a flash indoors at an equine event! NEVER! That's why I want that fast zoom glass! And, I figure I'd get some decent shots even at 2.8 I mean DOF-wise from certain angles.

I know, right? Apparently, it's done all the time, and the riders tell the announcer ahead of time if their horse doesn't tolerate it. I wouldn't take on that responsibility (or the liability) for anything. No thanks! And yes, you'd get plenty of good stuff at some angles. And hell, for the artistic stuff, who cares if the rider's face is in focus?

Well, I can't compete with your book cover, srika, but I heard final confirmation today (and received the tear sheet) that 2 of my images will grace the 2010 American Horse Council brochure, including the cover. No credits, it's not the type of publication to do that, but they're giving me a 1/2 page 4 color ad in their 2010 Horse Industry Directory. They sell for $650, so I'm happy with that, given that they're a non-profit I'd support anyway. And it's my first real paper publication that's more than someone else using my photos in an ad in a local magazine.

Sometimes you have no choice but to use strobes 
although I wouldn't ever use direct flash. I'd probably bounce them off a wall/ceiling. Or mount them in the ceiling like the NBA

I'm not knocking them altogether, just saying I wouldn't want to be responsible for someone's horse killing them or wigging out and breaking a leg. Doesn't seem worth it. Horses are unpredictable enough as it is...

First of all, belated congrats on the cover image D. It really looks good on there.
Regarding the Ricoh GXR. You gotta hand it to Ricoh. They pretty much own the niche point and shoot market and they've apparently been doing it pretty well for a number of years. I really like my GRD3. Regrettably, I've only had a chance to take it out three times so far. I just get a belt pouch for it and carry the thing with me everywhere. Bah, listen to me in excuse mode...

So my friend with a 5dmkii today borrowed my friends d3 and 70-200 and he loved the 3d tracking even though he didnt know how it really worked at first haha...
he said the d3's was noisey at 2500 im wondering what hes talking about lol...

It makes me sad for what these walls have done to so many people, because somewhere along the line people have come to believe that there is a hierarchy. And there most certainly is not.

great post - helping me a lot. I always had trouble with those "labels". I never even liked referring to myself as a "photographer". But this post helped me realize that I really, really do love photography.

Looking what i should be looking into next. I was thinking about an 85 1.4 but do you guys have any other lenses to save for or shall i go sell off a sb800 for an sb900.
I think I have a good setup and to really jump to a 700 with lack of funds will hurt so that is out right now.

You are set up for DX, I would stay where you are at until you have about 4k to move to FX. Selling the SB800 will get you more than you paid for it at this time, if you want a SB900, now is the time to sell and buy.
As far as lens if FX, I would recommend a 135DC, that things is beautiful for portraits. On a crop the 105 DC might be worth looking at.

Cool my canon 5d2 friend has the 135l 2.0 was wondering about nikons version of it. I recently found some info about the 135. Maybe I should look into more thanks for the links.
