what on earth????????? I would *NEVER* think about using a flash indoors at an equine event! NEVER! That's why I want that fast zoom glass! And, I figure I'd get some decent shots even at 2.8 I mean DOF-wise from certain angles.

I know, right? Apparently, it's done all the time, and the riders tell the announcer ahead of time if their horse doesn't tolerate it. I wouldn't take on that responsibility (or the liability) for anything. No thanks! And yes, you'd get plenty of good stuff at some angles. And hell, for the artistic stuff, who cares if the rider's face is in focus?

Their designer did a gorgeous job! (The second image is just a background fade on the inside, so I didn't post it on the site.)
Congrats

Are there credits on it to you?

Release Party Details

Hey folks! We have some fun news to share with you.

We are excited to announce the Capture My Chicago book release party! It's going to be the coolest book release party the Chicago area has ever seen. Everyone is welcome. Bring your friends, family and camera! It's going to be a great time for the community to come together to celebrate the unveiling of the book. It will be the first public viewing of the book, and the first time everyone gets to see who made the book. That's why we're calling it a release party, you see! Prize winners will sign books as well to make your copy even more unique!

Books will be available to purchase at the release party at the retail price. If you want to take advantage of the pre-sale discount, be sure to check our purchase page and get the book shipped free to your doorstep. Note: all books ordered online are put in queue to be shipped out immediately upon arrival of books from press. We expect to receive the press shipment the day before the release party, which means online orders will begin processing and get on their way as quickly as possible! This means books ordered online cannot be picked up at the release party.

What: Release Party
When: Wednesday, December 09, starting at 07:00 PM
Where: Borders Books and Music, 830 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL.

Now go RSVP to the party!

Agreed. On both points! It looks nasty glaring off of the sweaty horses.

No credits, it's not the type of publication to do that, but they're giving me a 1/2 page 4 color ad in their 2010 Horse Industry Directory. They sell for $650, so I'm happy with that, given that they're a non-profit I'd support anyway. And it's my first real paper publication that's more than someone else using my photos in an ad in a local magazine.

Sometimes you have no choice but to use strobes

although I wouldn't ever use direct flash. I'd probably bounce them off a wall/ceiling. Or mount them in the ceiling like the NBA

I'm not knocking them altogether, just saying I wouldn't want to be responsible for someone's horse killing them or wigging out and breaking a leg. Doesn't seem worth it. Horses are unpredictable enough as it is...

Ricoh announces the GXR interchangeable unit camera system

Lens, image sensor, and image processing engine integrated into a single interchangeable unit. World's smallest and lightest *.
Tokyo, Japan, November 10, 2009—Ricoh Co., Ltd. (president and CEO: Shiro Kondo) today announced the development and release of the GXR interchangeable unit camera system featuring the world's smallest and lightest* digital camera with the ability to change lenses.
The new GXR is an interchangeable unit camera system in which lenses are changed by using a slide-in mount system to attach camera units to the body. The lens, image sensor, and image processing engine are integrated into the camera units so the body itself does not contain an image sensor.
With world-leading small size and low weight* enabling easy carrying, the GXR interchangeable unit camera system features a highly rigid magnesium alloy body and multiple camera units that can be changed to best fit the scene to be photographed. You can enjoy easy lens changes as well as amazing image quality and shooting flexibility. Concealing infinite possibilities in its small body, the GXR is a revolutionary camera system that pioneers a new realm of photography.
Distinctive characteristics
  • Lens, image sensor, and image processing engine comprise an integrated unit which can be changed to match the scene being photographed.
  • World's smallest and lightest* digital camera with interchangeable lenses
  • System potential expanded through use of interchangeable units

Thank you, John! I am stoked. I kept waiting for it to fall through, or for them to choose another photo, so I didn't want to say anything, but it actually happened!

First of all, belated congrats on the cover image D. It really looks good on there.

Regarding the Ricoh GXR. You gotta hand it to Ricoh. They pretty much own the niche point and shoot market and they've apparently been doing it pretty well for a number of years. I really like my GRD3. Regrettably, I've only had a chance to take it out three times so far. I just get a belt pouch for it and carry the thing with me everywhere. Bah, listen to me in excuse mode...

Some good stuff from David duChemin's blog today. Definitely worth taking five minutes to read.

At least a couple times a week I get a great email from someone with something nice to say, some piece of advice they’re seeking, or just a general “hey how are ya?” and that email will say something like “I’m just an amateur photographer, but…”

Just?

That word elicits some pretty mixed responses in me. It makes me angry at an industry that’s erected such stupid and unnecessary walls. It makes me sad for what these walls have done to so many people, because somewhere along the line people have come to believe that there is a hierarchy. And there most certainly is not.

great post - helping me a lot. I always had trouble with those "labels". I never even liked referring to myself as a "photographer". But this post helped me realize that I really, really do love photography.

I don't see it as walls. I see it in most cases defining if you do or do not make a living from doing so. I can see what he's saying, but I think it a little too PC.

I don't know if this warrants its own thread, but if anyone is in the market for a T1i, there is a great deal going on Amazon with kit lens, plus 55-250 and printer for ~$840 after MIR.

Whats next
so i'm sticking to my d300,
so this is my gear
50mm 1.4 af-d nikor
17-55mm 2.8 nikon dx
70-200 vr 2.8 type 1 nikon
11-16mm 2.8 tokina
2 sb800

Looking what i should be looking into next. I was thinking about an 85 1.4 but do you guys have any other lenses to save for or shall i go sell off a sb800 for an sb900.

I think I have a good setup and to really jump to a 700 with lack of funds will hurt so that is out right now.

You are set up for DX, I would stay where you are at until you have about 4k to move to FX. Selling the SB800 will get you more than you paid for it at this time, if you want a SB900, now is the time to sell and buy.

As far as lens if FX, I would recommend a 135DC, that things is beautiful for portraits. On a crop the 105 DC might be worth looking at.
