Best lens for PLEASE HELP.

OK i have a canon xti nothing special. I need a lens for the all around picture taking for Easter and other events, one lens that i don't have to switch out with IS, money at this point is not an a problem. I need to buy one by 4pm PST.

Most pictures will be around the house some outside of the cousins and family egg hunting, etc.

i own a Nikon, so maybe you can take what i say and apply it to Canon...

for me, my 18-55mm lens does an excellent job for most pictures...it has a great wide angle and zooms in just enough if i need it...

now i do plan on getting a 50mm or 85mm lens with an f-stop of 1.4 so i can focus more on my subject and blur our the background...my 18-55mm only goes down to an f-stop of 3.5...so you might look at those as well...

there will be allot of shots of kids hunting for eggs, whole family shots i have a 28-80 right now it's ok,

Why i say money is not a problem a camera shop broke my canon xt and offered any lens at 75% off. I'm going to take advantage of that.

If money isn't a problem, get the 24-105, it's a bit odd focus range on a 1.6 cropped. But will have enough wide at 38 and a descent length at 168 to get kids w/o being right on top of them. Plus it's a 4.0 with IS, pretty good for inside with low light.

That lens seems to be a pretty good one. Very good write ups at amazon.com on it.

You saying money not being an issue, is why I suggested the 24-105 has a constant 4.0 and IS, which is better for indoors. Plus it's a L lens, much better built. At 75% it will cost about what the 28-135 would w/o a discount.

But I'm also one for buying the lens that I want, so I don't have to redo it later.

24-70 L? That is what I am planning on replacing my 28-135 with eventually.

The 28-135 seems kind of soft at the 135 end.

If he will do 2 lenses at 75% off, let me know, I am in for the 24-70L or the 70-200 2.8IS

^^they gave me the XTI at cost and one lens at 75% off i wish i could do more. I gave them my xt to clean 4 months ago i got it back the pins on the memorey card slot where broken, a huge finger print on the mirror that was attempted to be clean but instead has allot of minor scratches. They said it was their new tech who screwed up, but when i dropped it off they said they shipped it off so ???.

for a crop body, i'd personally probably want a 17-55,
but I rarely would do any zoom over 55. Hell I might even consider a 16-35 2.8

but i'd settle for a 24-105 ........

38mm is totally usable for people shots. It's not wide but all you have to do is step back accordingly. I very seldom feel limited with the 50mm for people shots. If I want wide-angle crowd shots, yeah then I feel limited.

thats because you have a 5D

24mm is not wide enough on a 1.6 crop,

for a general all purpose lens id say the 17-85 IS is a good lens for 1.6 cameras like the XTi

no I know its cropped, I said 38mm is OK and manageable. Maybe not as your ONLY lens, but arguable. The 50mm has been my primary lens for a while now.

He asked for a lens to photograph kids, that's why I suggest the 24-105, it's plenty wide and long for this purpose. You're only talking about 7mm in distance wide, plus when shooting kids the futher away the better 135mm vs 168mm. So you can get them in candid shots, not posing.

And at 75% off.

If they gave you 75% off any lens, you're insane for wasting it on a 24-105. Buy a freakin 600 f/4L, sell it, then buy a 1D3 with a 24-105 with the profits!

I would've asked for the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS and only pay like 400$

just to put it out there no I'm not rich or are my parents i have always paid out of my pocket. Right now I'm paying of my debt and enjoying the simple things......

Well, the thread is effectively over, but you're an idiot if you don't get the most expensive lens that you see yourself using long term.

Basically one of the Ls or the 17-55.

Lenses almost never EVER go on sale. Anytime you can get a notable discount on a great lens, you almost HAVE to go for it. I woulda totally went 70-200 F2.8 IS. Woo hoo!

BTW, what did your camera shop do to your camera? That's nuts that the shop broke a $500 camera and then gave you $700 off a lens.

I'm pretty sure most Camera stores carry 70-200mm's in stock.

At least, every camera store around here does.
