Be sure the $160 price is the PW Plus II and not some old stock of the first generation PWs.

yah its a pw II.

but its hard to justify spending the money on pocket wizards over the skyports in my situation, concidering im only a novice. its like half the price for a set of skyports,in my situation.

Also, if you go with PocketWizards or Skyports to trigger regular hotshoe flashes like the Vivitar or the 430EX, you'll need to get a miniphone to hotshoe cable like this for each flash: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Wizard_to.html

The 580EX has a sync port on the side that will let you use the cable that's included with the PocketWizard.

I like the small size of the skyports. You can fit three of them in the space that one pocketwizard takes up in your bag. They've never misfired on me and work at any distance I have tested.

The only two downsides are:
1) the receiver's power button is easy to turn on or off accidentally
2) the receiver's batteries are non-removable (but seem to last a very long time between charges)

Other than that, I highly recommend them.

And if you think this is confusing, take a look at radio poppers.

268 for 1 skyport trigger set with a vivitar flash and omnibounce
260 for 430EXII

or

260 for 430EXII x2

or
260 for 430EXII and 200for 430EX (infrared signal)

^ those are all options at this point. (in the 2 430EX scenario,me and my wife would both be able to use a flash on our cams if needed)

just to let you know, a 430ex or 430exII cannot be set off by another 430ex or 430exII or below.

iirc only a 550ex 580ex and 580ex II can. as well as the st-e2

and with the pocketwizards, you dont need a sync cable for the unit that is on your camera, you put it on your hotshoe.

if you're using pocket wizards or equivalent, then it doesn't matter.

Yes, you can use one in the hotshoe, but it's a manual flash so you won't have any communication with the camera to set the power level. You'll need some practice before you start getting correct exposures. A dedicated flash like the 430EX would be much easier to start off with.

Another option is to change your plan a bit and get used to on-camera flash with a single 430EX, then eventually you can build up a off-camera kit and you'll already have one strobe.

So I'm pretty disapointed right now. I went to costco today and they had a 40D kit with 18-55is canon camera bag, 430ex 1gb cf card and extra battery for $1160. They only ha 1 kit left an I only had $300 on me and they don't take credit

edit:i just saw that someone mentioned "works great with pocket wizards"

so in order to use all 3,would i just buy a pocket wizard set with a bridged wiring or something of the sort?

im more of a hands on or diagram person, sometimes without actually looking at something,i cant just figure it out in my head.

thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light (no pun intended lol)
I have a hotshoe to PC adapter for the 285 and 430ex and use a set of cybersyncs to trigger them. I would suggest you look into them as well, as they are around the same price as the skyports and are a great piece of equipment and compact.

for that kind of price id spend a few hundred more and pick up a used 5D. The prices are really dropping now since the mkII is out.

if you want to buy a 430exII i think i may be selling mine soon to grab a 580exII.

i learned off this model for about a year now and it has done great w/my 40d 10-20, 17-55 2.8, 30 1.4, and even my 85 1.8.

i still havnt made my mind up for sure. i dont NEED a flash right now,so its really not pressing, and the way i figure it,is eventually the prices are going to drop, and ill prob pick up the 580 then.

i only take pics around the house as of now,its not going to make me money,so its not that big of a deal if i dont get it,although id really like to get one.

update : i just purchased the 430EXII... my sister sent me an amazon gift certificate (prob as a late bday gift, but she didnt say)

and i used that to buy it. and an stofen omni bounce.

next on the eventual list will prob be a 580II whenever i get the rest of the strobist equip (triggers, umbrellas, etc)

thanks for your help guys. ultimatly the reason i went with the EXII was cause of the metal foot and quick release and 20% recycle time (pretty much the upgrades from the old version)
