Not allowed.

The whole thing with these contests is that it the photographer and not how good you are with photoshop.

You can't adjust white balance in these contests? The white balance straight out of the camera is never accurate.

Edit:

From the "rules"

-While post processing in photoshop is allowed, adding or removing parts of the picture is not. In the event a photo is suspected to be "photochopped" the contestant will be asked to provide the original picture.

The rules are copied and pasted from one contest to the next; typically verbatim.

I'm not telling him anything that can't be done in a lab with photochemical processing and a film camera.

Go look at my entry, I did cross processing digitally, but its a process that can be done in the real world. So, you think my entry shouldnt be allowed?

But I just read the rest of the posts, so youre forgiven

This was almost exactly the idea I had for this contest... Head over to Arlington National Cemetary on the way to work one morning and take a shot like this on a sunny day hoping the stones would light up in the distance... I'm glad someone else thought of the same thing since I won't be able to shoot it!

My initial thought was to put a toy solider on top of a stone, focus on that, and let the background fade into rows of little white circles. Oh well.

Shooting Stars

Ok, this one is going to take a little explanation...

What you're looking at here was completely done in-camera with no special effects or filters in Photoshop.

For this experiment, I needed a few goodies:
1) A sheet of black construction paper with a bunch of holes punched in it by a pen
2) A lamp to create a backlight
3) A black piece of paper cut into a circle with a star-shaped hole punched in the middle

The black piece of paper with the star punched in the middle was taped directly to the front of a 100mm macro lens. This disc effectively reshapes the aperture of the lens to make all the out of focus points of light into a nice star shape. Without the disc, the bokeh would just be round.

The next trick was to set a 3 second exposure, then turn the focus ring to go from out-of-focus to in- focus. It’s the same idea as a zoom pull, but using the focus ring instead. What this does is give a nice rounded shape to the big star and star trails to the stars at the perimeter of the frame.

The setup:

Star bokeh without turning the focus ring:

I know it's not exactly fine art, but I just thought I'd try something different. That's what I like about these contests.

so you basically made custom star bokeh... yeah.. you suck.

regular run-of-the-mill bokeh just wasn't good enough, was it...

It was pretty cool to play with. You can make any shape you want, so give it a try sometime.

You can still shoot things that are perfectly in focus too with the disc in front of the lens, so you could shoot a portrait with stars in the background for example. It might be something to try in the club one night...

I was literally 5 seconds away from buying a D3 today. Guy at samys said he might have one. there was a 50/50 chance. I dont really have the money for it, but I said what the hell, i'll gamble. If he found one i'd buy it.

sadly (and thankfully) he didnt find one.

I did give him my number though......
