so you left the camera in that exact spot for 5 hours??

Yeah so pretty much no reason for me to make an attempt at an entry with my little SD800IS with competition that steep.

I just used a cheapo shutter release from eBay.

All you have to do is put the camera into Bulb mode, start the exposure, then walk back 21 minutes later and stop it. You really don't have to be that precise with star trails.

The tricky part of this shot really wasn't the exposure(s), it was setting the camera up in the daytime so that Polaris would be properly framed at night. You can't see the star during the day, so framing is the difficult part.

But actually, it was more like 7 hours. I took exposures every couple hours starting at 2 or 3pm, but I ended up liking the ones around 5pm best.

This isn't so much a contest as it is an excuse to go and try something new.

You definitely don't need an SLR to do HDR work, just a tripod if you're going to take a few shots at different exposures. Drive around one day and look for a nice sunset or a cool building. There are hundreds of things even in your own home that would make for a cool HDR image. As srika said, just use your imagination!

those star trails are insane... is it common for them to follow a circular motion like that or is that something exclusive to this region?

Great shot, Dan. Star trail shots are cool and really put things in perspective for me. We are so small compared to the vastness of the universe. And we're spinning.

Shots like that really make me think.

Well, I hope at least the hiking is good. It has been kind of gloomy the last few days in the NW.

Dan, I am well and truly impressed. Great work.

The hiking has been fabulous! Just what I needed, pictures or no. Besides, even with the cloud cover, I'd never do these hikes this time of year back home...too dang hot!

I just got my parents old 210mm zoom which I think may work half decently. I figured I would give it a shot with my tripod, but I don't think it will work too well unless I go out to the country. Do you think that is zoom enough?

I took some pictures yesterday for my friend to use as a wallpaper.

Its a mild HDR effect but I like the subtleness. Not gonna win with Dan's awesome entry, but we need more pics in this contest.
