***Acurazine Photo Contest #14: HDR***
The theme for this contest is "HDR"
***All submissions should be HDR's.***
More info available here:

This gives you a good idea of the kinds of exposures you should get with your shots:

If you don't have the Photomatix software, you can download the Trial version and use that - it will put a Photomatix watermark in the pic but that is a non-issue. I have not tried CS3's built-in HDR Merging so I cannot comment on that - surely those are viable alternatives. I tried a free open-source HDR app and found its results to be somewhat horrifying.
Here is info on Merging to HDR using Photoshop CS3:

IF you have any questions - feel free to post them here.
The rules for this contest are as follows:
-Any interpretation of the theme that falls within AcuraZine rules is welcome.
-You must be the person that took the photo. Previous photos are acceptable as long as you are the one that captured the image. Taking a new, contest-specific shot is encouraged.
-One submission per contest.
-Images must be no larger than 900px in any direction. Links to larger images are allowed but you must have one that is under 900px for the poll.
-All contestants must host their own pictures.
-All pictures must have a title.
-While post processing in photoshop is allowed, adding or removing parts of the picture is not. In the event a photo is suspected to be "photochopped" the contestant will be asked to provide the original picture.
Important dates and poll info:
Entries must be submitted to this thread no later than August 26th @ 6pm EST. The poll will start on August 27th @ 5pm EST (or thereabouts). Multiple votes will be allowed. The poll will close at 5pm EST on September 3rd. In the event of a tie, we will have a lightning round of voting from 6pm EST September 3rd to 6pm EST September 4th where people get one vote.
Good Luck Everyone!!! And Remember - Shoot Early, Shoot Often!

I thought I'd read somewhere that the trial version of Photomatix only allows blending of 3 pictures max. Is this (hopefully) incorrect?
Their site only mentions the watermark as the difference between the trial and full.
"You are encouraged to download and try the software, if you have not done so yet. The trial version never expires and works the same as the licensed version, except the application of the watermark in the case of the trial."
man I can't wait to try this. If only I could come up with an imaginative subject.

A few suggestions of scenes that make good HDR's, just from what I've seen... cityscapes of course, cathedral interiors.. industrial areas.. any kind of machinery (in the right lighting).. beaches.. sunsets...
Dynamic lighting is paramount for good HDR's.. you will get the best range during the magic hours of dusk and dawn.. nighttime also works if you have good sources of color nearby.. daytime doesn't work so well. Good variation and gradation of colors will yield compelling result. Just some things to look for..

dang.. do you all know we have been doing these photo contests for over 2 years??? Billiam had the initial idea and started the first contest in June '05. Guess there have been some gaps in the middle... seeing how we are at #14 now.. maybe thats why it seems like a shorter duration of time... to me at least.

Plus there was a thread for previous winners and the themes were Entrances, Transportation and Night. But I couldn't find any others, so I'm not sure what 1-6 were.
