seems like the shutdown at the end of the year wasn't because no one wants the Model S after all.

If the Model S gets the 4680 cell that'd be dope. It's still running on the OG 18650s so it's battery pack is unnecessarily expensive to make. If they jumped from 18650 to 4680 that'd eventually be a big cost savings that they could use to add more luxury features. I think the Model 3 battery pack is 20-30% cheaper to manufacture because of the 2170 cells.

I feel like the S could stand to drive better.

They really need to throw the heat pump in this thing. The cheaper cars have significantly better efficiency in cold weather

Heat pump, new batteries and battery pack (probably 2170s not 4680s), 22 speakers, active noise cancellation (!), 3 screens, 3-zone climate. The kids can play video games in the back with wireless controllers (xbox/playstation) while you're driving!?

Maybe it's me but it looks like the main screen is 17in instead of 15in

OOOOOO maybe I should wait it out and get an updated S instead of a Y ... sell all my non-existent GME stock to fund it

Not that much of a fan of the new steering wheel. The display also just seems out of place. But then again so did the older one.

Tesla is getting rid of the steering wheel piece by piece in preparation for driverless cars. .

So, not only did they remove the wiper stalk, they've removed the turn signal stalk as well? Looks like it's now some haptic key thing on the steering wheel? That's going to go over well for the safety-conscious...

Otherwise the interior looks not bad - still missing the HUD.

I don't see how one could actually drive the car with that steering wheel or how that's even legal. The rest of the interior is a welcome change, but that wheel if true is deal breaker. Seems like Elon needs to put down the weed.

On the contrary. this validates that the rectangular steering wheel of Cybertruck is not a "show car design" but actually production focussed. Any bets that a lot of other automakers are going to copy this and do away with circular steering wheels. Welcome to the new world. Resistance is futile.

I would really like to see how to put this car into forward and reverse gear without any stalks or knobs.........may be using touch screens. ...????

Tesla’s new steering wheel comes with Autopilot sensor-based drive modes, force touch buttons, and more (electrek.co)
Tesla is introducing a brand new steering wheel in the new Model S and Model X.

In the new configurator, Tesla describes the new steering wheel, which has no stalk:
“The ultimate focus on driving: no stalks, no shifting. With a stalkless steering yoke, you can enjoy both the best car to drive, and the best car to be driven in.”
Previously, Tesla used stalks on its steering wheels like most other vehicles for turn signals, headlights and windshield wiper controls, and unlike other automakers, Tesla even used steering wheel stalks for other controls like Autopilot and the drive modes (PRND).

Tesla’s new steering wheel has none of that as the steering column is not equipped with any stalk.

It’s instead packaged into a streamlined butterfly steering wheel design:

In order to replace the stalks, Tesla is betting on a mix of AI and force touch buttons on the steering wheels to replace these functions.

The steering wheel is equipped with the same scrolls already found on the Model 3 and Model Y wheel, but it now features new force touch buttons for the turn signals, high beams, honk, Autopilot, windshield control, and voice commands:

I want to hear more about this "gaming computer" they're showing the Witcher 3 so it must be coming soon. Also that means there's probably an app store coming soon which could be another high profit revenue stream

Interesting reading the marketing on Model S page. They specifically say that the new version is capable of back to back 1/4mi runs, in reaction to the Taycan, and they say the new model has a 0.208 drag coefficient, compared to the Lucid Air's 0.21cd.

The Performance model is gone, replaced with Plaid model, and the previously announced Plaid model is now Plaid+. Ludicrous branding, I think they should've brought that back

The base Plaid model is probably still 100kwh but using 2170 batteries so it should have a nice charge curve and stay at 250kw for a while. Base Plaid 1/4mi is .67 faster than the fastest Lucid for $50,000 less. The Plaid+ beats the Dream edition in every tech spec but costs $30k less

They've basically beaten the Lucid Air at every spec and it's out first, and it's from an established EV brand with the best charging network

So about as powerful as a PS5 that has 10.28 and the Xbox Series X has 12.

Now, for the important question, will the badge snobs care about any of these improvements?

The $80k Taycan vs the $80k Model S is a tough sell IMO. The S has about 100mi more range, and is 60% faster 0-60, and the interior looks pretty decent now, it's got 3 screens and the power of a PS5 for gaming. Rumors are that Biden wants to bring back the EV tax credit so Tesla would qualify again

I don't think there are any rules or regulations on the shape of the steering wheel as long as it meets crash safety requirements. While I don't like the look either, I'm not sure it's illegal...

Where they might get boned is in the implementation of those buttons and AI as it pertains to other functions like turn signals and high beams. Saying "oops, I thought my car was going to flip on the blinker for me" isn't an excuse the police are going to buy. Similarly, having the AI shift the car into drive or reverse is also bound to have some legal issues come up before you know it. There have been other automakers that have gotten in trouble for changing these interaction points in the past (GM, Ford, and FCA come to mind) so there is precedent there.

That said, is that wheel standard or any option? Can you get it with a normal wheel?

The only thing going for the Taycan here is the better build quality and badge snobbery. I’m sure there’s enough space for both to coexist and sell well. But Tesla will dominate by an order of magnitude may be.

Assuming Tesla brand itself is a snobby badge...I'd still say, as neat as this is, that interior does squat for me. I need more buttons/aesthetics.

If I'm in the market for an e-car, that "entry" Porsche Taycan has my name all over it.

How long did it take you until gave up on your phone with a physical keyboard and switched to a phone with a full screen?

Remember that debate and how many people clinged to their blackberry? A vehicle with hardware buttons is harder to upgrade just as Steve Jobs described in 2007, if you got a great idea for your phone you can't go back and add a button, it's already shipped.

Skip to 5:07 to let Steve Jobs describe Tesla's logic to you

Buttons are going to be ancient as already described above. Snob value will keep it going for sometime though.
But now there’s no going back to dial up internet connection. .
