Walk the walk
Sex sells. Finally, some potential good news from GM. Now if they put this car in the Superbowl commercial instead of the robot it would have been money much better spent.

Looks very nice. Hopefully it doesnt stray too much from what we see.
May be a car too look at. If its priced right with the V8 i may look at this instead of the new cts

looks great, especially for GM.. but i was kind of dissapointed to read that some of the nice elements of the car (two tone interior/stitched dash, rims, and upgraded brakes) will not make it.

The stitched dash is Caddy's territory.
I would imagine the two-tone seats, brakes, 20s, etc, will most likely be reserved for the GXP. They can't put all the goodies on the GT.

The return of the rear-drive Pontiac sedan - - By BOB GRITZINGER - - Source: Autoweek
Ronald Reagan was president the last time Pontiac sold a rear-wheel-drive Grand Prix. The spiritual successor to General Motors’ performance sedan from the past arrives this week at the Chicago auto show, in the form of the 2008 Pontiac G8.
Due in dealerships early next year, the all-new performance sedan shares underpinnings with the Holden Commodore from GM’s Australian subsidiary. Commodore went on sale in Australia in August 2006.
Pontiac is now confirming what we reported a few weeks ago (“G8 Summit: Rear-drive Pontiac G8 replacement spied in Australia,” Jan. 22): Pontiac will sell two G8s, a base model powered by a 3.6-liter 261-hp, 250-lb-ft V6 with a five-speed automatic, and a GT running a 6.0-liter 362-hp, 391-lb-ft V8 mated to a six-speed automatic. Both trannies will feature manual shift mode; a six-speed stick (shown on the Chicago show car) will be available with the V8 sometime after launch. The V8 also will be equipped with Active Fuel Management, GM’s system that saves fuel by deactivating four cylinders during low-load driving. The GT also gets a standard limited-slip differential for improved traction.
The Chicago show car, while representative of the production GT, offers a glimpse at some tuner touches: 20-inch chrome wheels (18s are standard, 19s are available), lowered ride height, high-performance brakes with painted calipers, custom interior trim with leather-wrapped dash, the Phantom Grey paint job and a conceptualized version of the Pontiac badge.
Some might argue GM vice chairman Bob Lutz didn’t stray very far from his BMW past for the G8s bold styling cues—and we’d argue most BMW styling is worth cribbing. Regardless of the inspiration, the clean muscular lines and wheels-at-the-corners stance make an impressive design statement in this latest take on the Wide Track Pontiac tradition. Inside, G8’s uncluttered twin cockpit is highlighted by large round gauges and Pontiac’s signature red lighting.
Underneath, all the good stuff developed by GM’s rear-drive experts at Holden carries over to this first North American application of GM’s new global rear-drive architecture. The four-wheel independent suspension uses MacPherson struts up front and a four-link coil-over shock setup at the rear. Stopping power comes from four-wheel antilock disc brakes with vented rotors. GT models get one-inch larger brake discs.
“The rear-wheel-drive engineering team has put together a simply spectacular car that captures the essence of Pontiac,” says Pontiac general manager John Larson. “We believe that the Pontiac G8 will rival competitors costing far more.”
And just how much is that? When Lutz spilled the beans on the car back in January, sources suggested pricing starting at around $25,000—with just 30,000 to 50,000 copies available. If G8 can succeed where GM’s last Aussie import—the pricier Monaro-based Pontiac GTO coupe—couldn’t, maybe we won’t have to wait through two Bushes and a Clinton for Pontiac’s next rear-drive sedan.

The sizzle in the Steak
It's nice...for a Pontiac. The rear is bland. The side and front exterior designs are nice...but not cutting edge or ground breaking. To sum up the exterior: It's a better Pontiac.
It's no where as great a design as the CTS....granted the CTS is a Caddy, but this Pontiac isn't going to turn most people's heads on the street...IMHO.
The interior is a HUGE improvement for Pontiac. The center stack is finaly done right!!!
Too bad the stiching on the dash is out.
Powertrain-wise...you can't go wrong with RWD and the engine choices and transmissions.

See the car in person its definately more imposing than the 5 and 7 series BMW, even the M5. Its curved wheel arch simply doesnt come across in the pictures. I would say that in the flesh it would look more imposing than the CTS (although I havent see the CTS), since it has a far bigger fender buldge. Looks menacing when its following you or from front on shots.

Though this car is already drawing comparisons to it's main competition (the 300), I think this is Pontiac's first genuine attempt to be the everyman's BMW. To that extent I think Pontiac would like to see this car viewed as a value alternative to the 5-series, and I think they'll succeed. Ofcourse, it probably won't have the finesse of the 535i/550i, but the car will probably be fun to drive and have great handling dynamics. On paper, it's right on the mark; I can't wait to read the reviews of it. On a lesser note, I like the new Pontiac arrow that debuted on the G8.

Here's an interesting comparison. The car is will most likely go head to head with the 500-Taurus/Maxima/Avalon/300/Charger/next Gen Impala as another family hauler, though this one will decidely be more fun to drive than an Avalon or 500. Still, it's drawing some comparisons from the higher ups... I found it interesting.

That was uncalled for...
Give credit where credit is due:
GM, This looks FANTASTIC. The exterior looks great, as does the interior, and a 6-speed.
Really Impressed - Two thumbs for GM

Its styling is right on the mark, if not more aggressive than other cars in its class.

^ The definitely lifted alot of cues from BMW. I get sick of people pointing to the split grill used by Pontiac and saying it's copied by BMW, though. Pontiac's been using a split grill for many, many years, and it has nothing to do with BMW.

I think the car looks great, but I'd prefer it without the hood scoops. It's a shame the interior is going to be downgraded for the production model. For the couple hundred bucks more it would cost them to leave it as is, I'm sure it would draw a lot of new buyers to the brand.

I think it looks great, I don't know about buying one because of the dealership/brand issues, but I think they have done a great job with design
And if they are starting to copy BMW design cues... it's about time, in this car market you might as well
