If I bought a $27k 350Z and spent $18k on performance mods, I'd be able to kick the shit out of a 300ZX TT which cost $45k back in the early 90s.
Bone stock the cars are comparable and if you go on price the 350Z is a landslide winner.

nice, compare bottom-end price on the 350Z with top-end on the TT.....
I've seen 350Z's on the lot for $37k.
I'd take a 300ZX TT over the 350Z without even thinking. Of course now it'd have some miles on it, but still.
and btw, it wasn't easy to get 450-500hp with just bolt-ons on a 300ZX..... you're thinking of the Supra even if you could get 450-500hp on the Z, something would have broke, unless you put in more $$$ to reinforce and strengthen key areas such as driveshaft, clutch, rear-end, etc.

^^^ but that is definitely one of the things I like about turbocharged cars over N/A.... relatively easy to mod. btw... the 350Z and 300ZX do reach the 1/4 in about the same time and speed... here's just one test:
http://www.mkiv.com/publications/roa...4/rt294_10.jpg
I have also seen as quick as 13.7 for the 300ZX though.. but - they are comparable. BUT... guess which car feels faster? turbo ownsj00.

The cheapest sticker for the Z32 was about $27k for the base model back in 1990 (which translates to $40k in 2005). The TT priced at about $45k in 1996 (or $54,600 in 2005).
With the Z33, you now get similar performance to the Z32 TT effectively for less than the cost of the Z32 NA.

I highly doubt that a 450z would happen anytime soon. Nissan/infiniti has to succeed with the GT-R before ever considering something like this. If nissan and toyota failed selling the supra and 300zxtt, i doubt they would repeat their mistake

same goes for the 450Z and the GTR.
while using different engines (4.5 V8 in the Z making 430, twin-turbocharged, 3.7-liter V6 making 450hp in the GTR).. one will probably be cheaper than the other.. i guess its the same for the G35c/350Z.. but a more racy, hardcore versions of both.. the good thing about these two are that they both have a history.. the Z and the GTR names are pretty damn legendary..

As for the topic at hand, I think Nissan does need to rethink any strategy that puts a Nissan badged car above $45k. My Murano stickered at $36,XXX , which puts it within a grand or two of the FX35. If it wasnt for my wife's dislike of the FX, I would have DEFINITELY bought the more upscale FX35 AWD.

^ when Nissan badged cars are priced more/less the same as comparable Infinitis then, they should probably reassess the pricing strategy IMHO.

The qx is a selling ~1k a month, but compared to the escalade/ navigator I don't think thats really that great a number. SUV's in that segment seem to also be more readily accepted where a fullsize 50k+ luxo sedan really has to be an outstanding car with all the right stuff to have nice sales going against the 7/s-class/ls. Infiniti definately has their work cut out for them with the GTR and next Q-series sedan.
I don't think the Nissan brand really has what it takes to make it at that price range with any car, including GTR.

But, your post is dead on. The irony is that my $36k Murano is far from being the priciest setup. Our dealer had one for $42k MSRP (SE AWD, Touring, Navi, DVD, wet bar, etc,...)...and the leather in the Mo is only on the seating surfaces, not a true leather interior. That said, I still love it and the power delivery is seemless.

Nissan Looking to Launch 400-hp V8 "Z"
Date Posted 11-28-2005
TOKYO — Nissan is planning to shoehorn the 4.5-liter V8 that powers several Infiniti models into its 350Z sports car to create a 400-horsepower hot rod.
The muscled-up coupe would be called the 450Z, says U.K. magazine Autocar. So far, the more powerful coupe has not been confirmed for production, but Nissan is seriously considering it in a bid to compete with the likes of Porsche.
The 450Z could also have an Audi quattro-style four-wheel-drive transmission in order to make sure the V8's output can be safely transferred to the road. The only problem is that the V8 currently doesn't meet all worldwide emissions rules. But Nissan is planning to modify the engine to meet Euro IV standards as it's planning to launch Infiniti in Europe in early 2007.
What this means to you: More power means higher price and more profit for the car companies, but it's not exactly going to please the environmental lobby.

I'm thinking similarly about the FX45.

In addition, why not compare the price of the 300ZX TT using today's dollars? Either way, the 350Z is a performance bargain compared to the 300ZX TT

While rare, there have been stock 350z's that did mid 13's. Either way, the 350Z is slightly faster stock for stock. Quite an accomplishment for significantly less cost.

I remember a while back there was a Top Gear video of old vs new and they had the 300zx and new 350 going head to head in a little drag race. While they seemed to perform the same down low the turbo seemed to show a clear advantage up top and walked away.
