The sizzle in the Steak
August Good, Bad....not so ugly
The good
Volkswagen’s Jetta TDI, which qualified for $4,500 in rebates for those taking advantage of the Clunkers program, was a virtual sell-out in August. The automaker says that the strong month essentially depleted 2009 TDI inventory. Tiguan, CC and, for the first time in months, Routan, also posted strong numbers for the month.
Ford’s Focus, one of the best sellers during the Clunkers program, saw a 56 percent increase in demand to 25,547 units, while Fusion sales hit their highest point ever at 21,010 units sold. Ford’s Escape was up 49 percent to 20,933. Of Ford’s retail models, only Taurus, Mustang, Expedition, Explorer and Econoline saw sales drop offs.
Mercury also posted a strong month thanks to a 112 percent increase in demand for its Milan (to 3,844) and a 50.3 percent increase for the Mariner (to 3,921 units).
The bad
Like most luxury brands, Lincoln’s sales weren’t so hot. All models posted at least a 20 percent drop in demand.
Mercedes-Benz also saw a 7.5 percent decrease in sales, although a 74.2 percent increase in demand (to 4,671) for the E-Class helped out.
The not-so-ugly
Ford, up 21.2 percent to 161,369.
Lincoln, down 38.4 percent to 5,874.
Mercedes-Benz, down 7.5 percent to 17,112.
Mercury, up 8.2 percent to 9,080.
Volkswagen, up 11.4 percent to 24,823.

The current SRX is larger, but will soon fit in as well. The Land Rover LR2 should be here too, but Tata does not publish monthly sales numbers.

why it scored full points in fit/finish and offroad ability? why it has 4400lbs tow ratings. They others are just car based SUV. this thing goes beyond that.
#330
MDX/RX/ML are already cheap. starting at $40k for 3.5L to 3.7L engines. if Q5 has to get 3.0T. its price will zoom pass $45K. and that without Prestige/drive select/S line.
#332
It's that English language thing (again). Entry Level means your most affordable product. Therefor by definition, the Q5 is Audi's entry level SUV since there isn't one lower. Thus, it gets compared to other brand's 'entry level' SUVs. Simple huh?

The CRV sales increase to 30K/month up 58% from last year don't surprise me. I know a few CRV owner's, really versatile little SUV with some neat features.
#334
what is more entry level than RX in lexus? how is its starting price?. does it have more wheel base?. total interior capacity has no more than 5% difference.

Those RX numbers are amazing, over 9K/month in this economy.

The Q5 is based on the MLP platform which underpins the B8 A4 and A5/S5. This platform is also going to be used on the next generation A6, A7, and A8. The Q5 is "just" a 100% car based platform as well. Please get your facts correct. The Q7 uses a modified VAG PL71 platform, also used in the Touareg and Cayenne.

C&D is not stupid giving it 5 in offroad ability.
this is even without $5K offroad package.

But we weren't there to pit it against sports cars. Audi first wanted to demonstrate the Q5's terrain-bashing capabilities, so off we went to the Sepang-Silverstone Off-Road Park
There, the Q5 faced obstacles ranging from side-inclines to steep slopes. And you know that they're steep when even people have difficulty climbing or descending from them.
Fitted with its standard road-going tyres, the Q5 (with two passengers) was climbed up gradients 31 degrees-steep with ease. Descending from them, though, was more dramatic - for its passengers, at least.
I can't remember the last time, or any time at all when I was in the driver's seat, with absolutely no view of the ground in front of me. And to move off from such a point seems... a bit suicidal, to say the least. A Germany lady guide at the top of the hill waved me on. I nodded, released my foot off the brakes and took in a deep breath - the same kind you take when you're right at the top of a roller-coaster, knowing it's going to plunge in the next second.
But in the Q5, instead of rolling freely down the slope, its electronic stabilisation programme (ESP) took over and carefully guided the car to ground level, calmly and accurately as a trained parachutist would to make a perfect landing. The electronics cleverly managed its wheels, preventing any lock-up and unwanted sliding about, while allowing the driver to maintain control over its steering.

^^ I believe DrewSRX was only saying the Q5 is also a car-based SUV. In your last post, you made it sound like it's a truck-based SUV. Perhaps it's only a little misunderstanding. Relax.

Where are Buicks? Where is the Enclave, that is a great SUV. Where is the new Lacrosse?
Any Jaguar numbers?
The HS starts at 34k, its not pre entry level, thats only a grand less than the TL. Where is the ES?
Where is the Hyundai Genesis? That may lack the badge but it surely is at least an entry level luxury vehicle.
#344
this pretty old way of measuring offroad performance and truck based SUVs are generally heavy. so most of the time they stuck in soft grounds. thats why Toyota Landcruiser always had electric wench in front. Now with modern torque and weight distribution along with wide band torquier engines. there is no need of truck base SUV in most situations.

He originally wanted a Highlander (none to be found in the area), then a MDX (gas mileage too low for C4C), then settled on the RX.
#346
Well, since fewer women than men are losing jobs, the girly RX continues to sell well, compared to the macho looking MDX, ;-)!

ah, finally the TL's sales numbers are where they belong. Hopefully Acura sees the err in its ways and turns around this ridiculous styling trend.

The panic may be setting in at Honda about now and the MMC redesign of the TL might take a more substantial turn like the 06 Accord did.

The guy who designed that plenum grille should have his head stuck inside one and be displayed in the village square as an example to others.

Most here won't remember, but back in '93 when Acura moved to the round headlights for the Integra, people screamed. 6-7 years later, people loved it. Maybe Acura should leave this generation TL in production for two product cycles.....

IMO, they can keep the plenum. Just make it smaller and don't make it extend into the damn hood. Make it level with the headlights. Such a simple change makes such a huge difference.

I guess I was one of the few that liked it. Bought a 98. Although that was the year the styling was ever so slightly revised.

I agree 1000% on the plenum. In and of itself, it's not a big problem. Its the part going into the hood and the way it doesn't match the lines of the car. I was looking at a used '08 TL yesterday and can see how they've been trying to prepare is for this new look. It has a small grill extension on the hood, and the center 'spline' (with the logo) is so large, it almost touches the top of the hood. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to fill in the small bit of open grill space between the hood and the "A" logo. If you do, voila! Power Plenum

I doubt if all the Honda stock investors will let the Acura brand will last this long with the two top-most sedans suffering continuing poor sales.
Back in '93 with the Integra, people screamed but sales kept flying. But this time people scream and sales sliding. Not quite the same.
