Test drove an 09 I4 GT 6 yesterday as my brother law is looking to buy.

I was very impressed overall. The interior was great and the exterior is by far the best in class IMO. But the car did not have the refinement of the 08 Accord we had just test drove before it. The 2.5 made itself heard, the steering wasn't as accurate as the Accord. Surprsingly the handling didn't feel as sharp and the Accord felt much better planted over bumps and in turns. It was also a tad more sluggish than the 177HP LX Accord. Not to mention the Accord felt more spacious on the inside although the 6 has the trunk advantage as well as the 60/40 vs passthrough advantage.

But I'd still reccomend it over the Accord and my brother in law will likely end up buying the 6. The shortcomings weren't enough to offset the 2k price difference between the Accord LX and 6 GS with convinience package. The 6 is better equipped and just looks so much better on the outside.

^ I've test driven the new 6 as well. If I were in the market for that type of vehicle right now, I'd definitely take it over the Accord. In fact, I probably wouldn't even consider the Accord....it just makes me all over.

The 6 is without question, the best looking car in the class IMO. But the Accord isn't that bad in my view. Just those bug eyed lights that have to go. You really have to consider the Accord when shopping in that class. It really is the better car IMO, at least in 4 cylinder trim.

Even with the 6 being 2k cheaper with more content and Mazda throwing in lifetime oil changes, they still couldn't decide because they liked the way the Accord drove THAT much better.

I saw one for the first time on the 19th. It looks really good! But as many have said before, I liked the rear and side shot better than the front, although the front isn't bad.

I sat in one today, didnt drive it.

I like the size and style. Definitely more sophisticated than the previous gen.

Edmunds tested the V6 to do 14.6 @ 96.5mph, which is not bad at all for a automatic V6, faster than a 4G TL auto, even. It has 270tq, which has got to help.

I could def see myself driving one of these in 2-3 yrs when My CL-S6 will be 150K+. I know people on here will whine about no manual option, but the VAST majority of people will buy the automatic anyways, as would I. I love my 6 speed CL-S, but with traffic nowadays I really wish sometimes it was an automatic.

The gas mileage isnt great for the 6 (17/25), but it does take regular, which helps in the $$ overall.

In that same Edmunds test the V6 6 got better MPG than the Accord.

In 2-3 years the V6 could have an MT option.

Brother in law ended up buying a 6MT GS I4 with comfort package. $27,800 on the road. Sold it for $400 over invoice after only 2 weeks on the market.

I got him invoice pricing through my CCC account. He's cheap.

Actually I was pretty surprised. Both the Honda and Mazda dealer told us what invoice was and offered to sell for $500 above right off the bat. He got them down to $400. Pretty good for a car that just came out.

What are the sales numbers for the redesigned 6? I thought the redesigned 6 came out last year, seems like it's kinda quick for a midcycle facelift?

I haven't seen many on the roads around the DC area, wondering how it's doing sales wise.

i believe the car's been out for 2 years (came out in 2008 as a 2009 model). could be wrong.

i don't see as many as i'd have expected on the roads. i remember reading/hearing that the car doesn't drive/handle that well.

style-wise, i think it's best in its class. (especially with the dual exhaust, which makes its rear one of my favorites today.)

wagon: :thumbups: love it.

coupe: if only. the sedan is already very agressive.

Mazda sold 35,000 Mazda6 models last year.

For comparison, Hyundai sold 120,000 Sonatas and 21,000 Genesis sedans (hmm, there may be coupe sales in that number too).

Yeah, it looks fantastic inside and out, but I've never test driven it before so.. I can't comment on the overall drivability.

The folks that complained that it was not as big as the Camcord still don't buy it and the former Mazda 6 buyer thinks it has lost its "zoom-zoom" = no sales increase.

I drove it back to back with the Accord and IMO the Accord was the better overall car. More refined and a better ride plus it was more comfortable and had more room. Handling was even cripser IMO.

But they're getting there. The difference wasn't all that great.

Definitely the most underrated car in the sedan class. Its only true competition is the altima and the new fusion. The camcord is outclassed by it, but they remain at the top, thanks to the power of the lemming.

Looking at the success of the 3rd gen altima, I can see how they believed they could have similar success by upsizing, while remaining somewhat sporty. That, plus all reviewers and sedan buyers complained that the 1st gen was too small. This is an instance where they shouldve said fuck you to the press, and stuck to what was working for them.

Definitely your opinion. When we drove them back to back, I could only wonder how honda manages to move so many, since there was nothing noteworthy about it. The 6 i was quieter during normal driving, had a FAR smoother and more controlled ride, all while being more fun and better looking inside and out.

But like I said above, the power of the lemming keeps the accords flying off the lot, while more deserving and better cars go overlooked.

Definitely your opinion. To me the killer for the 6 is the interior. Its just bad IMO and nowhere near as nice as the Accord. Plus you can get the Accord as a coupe which narrows the exterior styling gap....

Post 2 Mil

1 of the reasons that Japanese automakers have seen so much success in the U.S. is that they stand by their models -- generation after generation. Case in point: Mazda, which just produced its two millionth Mazda6 worldwide.

It took 8 years and 6 months to reach the milestone. But it marks the 2nd fastest time to hit 2 million. 1st? That was the smaller Mazda3. Contrast the longevity of the Mazda6 and 3-- or Honda Accord and Civic or Toyota Camry and Corolla -- with most models from Detroit. The Big 3 are constantly change model names, forcing them to reeducate consumers each time a new one rolls out. Often they have little choice, having let a nameplate go downhill with little updating until it stands for little more than "worn out" to buyers.

The midsize Mazda6 was fully redesigned in 2007, and is probably due for another update. It is made in Japan, Michigan and China.

"Mazda6 is 1 of the core models which helped establish Mazda's brand image globally," said Seita Kanai, Mazda's senior managing executive officer in charge of R&D and Program Management. "I'm grateful to the 2 million-plus customers around the world who have purchased a Mazda6."

Seriously? Mazda hasn't stuck with their model names for that long.

323 -> Protege -> Mazda3
626 -> Mazda6
MPV -> Mazda5

Talking Spider Recall

Mazda has a creepy crawly culprit in its new safety recall -- a spider.

After discovering spider webs in the vents, the Japanese automaker is recalling more than 50,000 Mazda6 cars from the 2009-2010 model years in the United States and an additional 15,000 vehicles in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

The company said Thursday a spider could weave a web in a vent connected to the fuel tank system and clog up the tank's ventilation. Pressure on the fuel tank could lead to a crack, causing fuel leakage and the risk of a fire.

Mazda said it was unaware of any fires, injuries or crashes in the vehicles.

Mazda spokesman Jeremy Barnes said dealers had identified 20 cases in which spider webs were found in the vents. The webs were linked to yellow sac spiders, Barnes said, but it was unclear why they were crawling into the Mazda6 rather than other vehicles.

Adding to the mystery, Barnes said the arachnoid attraction to the sporty cars -- which the company has marketed with its "zoom-zoom" tagline -- had no specific connection to a particular region of North America.

"Perhaps yellow sac spiders like to go zoom-zoom?" Barnes quipped.

The recall involves vehicles with V4 engines built from April 2008 to February 2010.

Owners will be notified by mid-March and told to take their vehicles to dealers for inspection and repairs. Customers can call Mazda at (800) 222-5500.

Okay, this is either the weirdest spin ever for an actual fuel tank problem or Mazda is being super cautious

Either way, I skate by with my 3.7L V6, but one has to wonder WTF on this one...?
