Mazda6 owners say sedan's door sashes are rusting - Automaker says spots are stains caused by lubricant - - - By MARK RECHTIN | Automotive News

LOS ANGELES -- Mazda North American Operations is facing challenges from owners of 2003 Mazda6 sedans that have developed rustlike stains in the door sashes and trunk lids.

Mazda calls the problem a stain, but owners are calling it rust and say they are miffed that Mazda refuses to come clean on the issue. Many are turning to Internet car-talk sites such as Edmunds.com to air their gripes. One Mazda6-specific site by mid-week last week had registered 109 owners complaining that their cars are rusting within the first year of purchase. As many as 50,000 Mazda6s could be affected.

This does not sound good for the 6, nor for Mazda.

how do a car manufacture take care of something like this? replace the entire door? can be very costly.

I go to the mazda6 site (pretty dead compared to a-cl), and yea its an issue. Mazda said that in on of the plants, while the cars were being assembled, there was some soap water arround or something, and that affected a certain number of cars comming from that plant. Luckly mine is an '04

well you never know...the paint mixture did call for one coat metallic paint...one squashed newt brains, and one coat virgin blood (i..e minch juice), followed by a witch's incantation. Honda/Acura did not include the newt brains, and thus their paint is much thinner

I know it's probably pissing off Mazda 6 owners, but it is sort of funny. There hasn't been a major manufacturing Snafu on something so simple like this in quite a while.

Of course there were M3 engines and CL/TL tranmissions self-destructing, but at least those problems involved complex parts.

I heard the Mazda 3 is having many issues already too.

Rusting already? Not good at all. Another blow to Mazda's image.

The rust now contributes to Mazda re-stating Mazda 6 hp numbers. The Mazda 6 actually makes, u guessed it, 6 horsepower!

The Mazda 6 range will get its long-awaited 260bhp range-topper early next year, when the production version of the MPS first shown at the 2002 Paris Motor Show finally hits UK showrooms.

The turbocharged 2.3-litre four-wheel-drive 6 will be sold in small numbers, with a sales target of around 3000 across Europe. ‘We’ll keep it fairly limited at a good price,’ said a senior Mazda executive. He predicted the price would be around 35,000 Euros (£25k),
undercutting rivals such as Alfa’s £28,540 156 GTA.

The concept was branded MPS, which stands for Mazda Performance Series, but internal debates still rage about the branding of the production car; some boardroom members favour MazdaSpeed 6.

‘We’re trying to create an RS or Type-R type brand for Mazda,’ said a company insider. The hottest Mazda will, however, be refined and well-equipped and should be unveiled at September’s Paris Motor Show.

The 6 will be joined by a Mazda 3 MPS version, due to arrive in early 2006.

Glad this car made production, although 20hp short.

I think they will debug it in Europe and then sell it here as well. Mazda has proven they want to get into the performance line market with other offerings with the Lancer and the Miata lately.

I read in C&D that this model is coming only to Japan and Europe. It said they didn't want to release it in the US for unknown reasons. I guess we'll see if it comes here. I'd personally rather have a 260hp NA v6 than a turbo 4 for a midside sedan though

more than 30k for a mazda 6?

all wheel drive and modability for the turbo ownz. This could possible be the next best performance for the dollar after the srt-4.

I'm glad that they went the turbo way with the 2.3L instead doing the same mistake as with millenia.

I am guessing because Mazda's primary, immediate objective is to add one or two more SUVs to its lineup for the USA market.

Mazda is prepping its own entry for the Subie-Mitsu rally wars—a 276-hp, 265-lb-ft Mazda 6 scheduled for a mid-2005 world debut. Spotted during hot-weather tests in the California desert, this sizzling prototype gets a twin-turbocharged and intercooled 2.3-liter four that is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and sends power via all-wheel drive to 18-inch tires.

Based on Mazda’s Mazda Performance Series concept shown in Paris in 2002, the production model should debut at this September’s Paris show, carrying either the MPS or MazdaSpeed moniker.

When I read the thread topic I thought of a twin-turbo V6 for the 6, what a let down. :(

looks just like an 04 TL body style... well sorta...and now with the same hp.

Strange. Why twin-turbo for an inline-4 engine ? Most twin-turbo cars use twin-turbo because each turbo feeds one air/fuel intake arm (left or right V) of the V6 engine. So how is this Mazda twin-turbo set up with an inline-4 engine ?

AWD and 276HP and 265TQ on turbo I-4 with 6-speed would be a fun car!... However, with the 05 STi amd new EVO MR both close to $30k there is no way you can pick up a Mazada unless there is $5k rebate!

Not necessarily.

A biturbo setup could be sequential in a 6 or more cylinder config. I am guessing that this is sequential in this case.
