Lexus Large Coupe News **6-series Fighter Spied (page 1)**

Getting Back in the Game: Toyota caught testing sporty Lexus entries - - Source: Autoweek

After several years of essentially staying on the sidelines of the sports car arena, it is becoming clear through quick glimpes at test tracks that Toyota is about to re-enter the raging horsepower wars in a big way. Our spies caught Toyota testing a high-performance coupe at the Nürburgring with proportions aimed at cars like the BMW 6 Series.

This test mule sports a Japan-market Toyota Crown Royal body that already uses a V8 engine and crucially, can be fitted with rear- or all-wheel drive.

While bodied as a sedan, notice several inches were cut out of the rear doors and roof. Other hints are the quad exhaust pipes, lowered suspension, large disc brakes and low profile tires.

With the Lexus brand’s recent introduction into the Japanese market and growing performance ambitions as telegraphed by its LF-A sports car concept (AW, Jan. 17), this future coupe will likely carry the Lexus badge.

Ha! So Lexus will copy BMW offerings to the "t"! Good for them. Time for BMW to feel some pricing pressure.

That's not the body they're going to use is it... (Didn't catch it in the reading, but I'm thinkin' they would use that body in a two door version?) or are they just testing out the platform right now..

Can you imagine how well Caddy would do if they had interiors like that? GM is getting better but for a company of it's size to not be leading the pack, it's a shame really.

The crown is a truly classy car. Would our equivalent be a camry or avalon for that?

And thats "just" a Crown Royal, which is Crown's V6 model.

Crown Majesta(the V8 model) is much better inside and out:

interior: http://toyota.jp/crownmajesta/interior/index.html
exterior: http://toyota.jp/crownmajesta/exteri...lor/index.html

The best have yet to come, they will save it for the LS line for sure.

Acutally, that's was the equivalent of the LS (with a V6 though), if I'm not mistaken. I've been waiting to see what happens to that nameplate now that Lexus has finally been introduced in Japan. The Crown has been around for a long time. I always liked the exterior of the Crown as opposed to the LS, but I never got a good shot of the interior. That interior is beautiful... with a better design than our LS, IMO.

But back to the subject at hand, WOW. I love that Lexus is pulling no punchs (wish MB or BMW). This car will definitely be a nice ass ride.

Avalon, since it's Toyota's halo car currently for our shores.

That's just to throw us off. Just like the GTR lurking underneath the G35 coupe skin in the other thread. The good stuff is underneath.

Really? I stand corrected. So the Crown will continue side by side with Lexus. That's a sweet interior.

Actually, the Toyota "LS430" is the Celsior. Our LS430s are simply rebadged Celsiors.

Though I would not be surprised if the Crown Majesta and Royal are based on the Celsior platform. I think the Celsior is the top sedan in the Toyota lineup next to the Century or whatever their V12 presidential cruiser is called.

^^ Right. Gav already caught me on that. The Crown is the Avalon here, and the LS is the Celsior there.

Why is the RWD/AWD Crown linked to the Avalon? I missed the discussion earlier.

The Crown isn't linked to the Avalon in anyway. We have no version of it here.

The Avalon is based on the next-gen Camry platform, if I am not mistaken. Previous iterations had all been based on the Camry platform.

The Avalon is an American exclusive--in no other country is it offered. It's designed and made here, right in America.

When you say linked what do you mean? I never meant it like the Avalon and the Crown shared components. I used the word halo (i believe you did too). So they are linked only from the perspective that the Crown is the top Toyota offering there as the Avalon is here.

I think the Crown could have been a Lexus, superior to our avalon in quality,

but with the new Is-series, which has an equal interior to the crown yet superior exterior imo, there really is no longer a need for it and surpsingingly, Lexus Japan(august05) seems to only use Us based cars- probably a smart move since the US is the largest market(proving ground).
