Hyundai: Sonata News

spotted
I'm not sure if this car is officially out yet... I haven't seen one And I think I've mentioned in the past, apparently my next door neighbor has a friend or relative that works for Hyundai because my last 3 first sightings has been in front of his house (the Genesis sedan/coupe, now Sonata).
looks pretty good in person... in fact, I'm going to go out there again and take a peek of the interior.

^ I was talking about that with my father, and he pretty much said the same thing.
I mentioned that that is the same style that Porsche uses to paint their vehicles, and he said "Big deal. Ford has been doing that for years." He went on to mention the commercial that Ford had 10-15 years ago with the employees mentioning electrostatic paint.
In my mind this is good marketing for Hyundai. They are appealing to their current base, and people that buy Hondas and Toyotas. It's not like they are trying to steal Mercedes owners.

After looking at countless commercials of Hyundai during SuperBowl, I would say they are going to get really big over next couple years. Go Hyundai! and Saints!

The Sonata is looking good, I'd take one over a Camry (not just because of the recall lol).

pretty good interior, too.
Big question is will they offer a V6?

plus that pale green/blue lighting on the center console that Toyota uses on the Camry is so ugly. Looks like a 90's TV remote backlight. I didn't like the way the Sonata looked initially in photos but its growing on me.

They've taken cues from a lot of other makers in the past but this time they'll take the lead and be the first to dump the V6 option in the mid sized sedan market. The EPA rules will eventually force the others to do the same. That and the DI 4 makes enough power to be "good enough".
Maybe superficial things like paint and some of the other things mentioned in the commercials are championed by Hyundai's marketeers, but I would have thought they'd brag about being the only car in the segment with a DI engine.

great ads for the sonata!
and i know they'e used the whole "another name for luxury...hyundai" (or something like that) before, but it really drives a point, imo.

$28,500 for a loaded Limited with Navigation, Homelink, iPod, and floor mats.
An Accord EX-L with the same options is about $2k more. A Nissan Altima 2.5SL is about $2k more. A Mazda 6i Grand Touring is about $2k more. A VW Passat is $2k more.
Only the Camry XLE is about the same price.
So there is some value there off the start with the Hyundai. The question is will it stay that way. Historically, that answer is no.

i'm in korea right now.. i literally see one YF sonata every 2 minutes...
from where they came from, it's outstanding.. but it wasn't jawbreaking
in fact, i'm already getting tired of the design..
i think it seems a bit bulky.. like height vs width wise, it's too tall imo
i've heard that 2012 azera will have awd...

Yeah, the difference being that Porsche and Mercedes charge extra for metallic, while you get it for free with the Hyundai.

Drove our first arrival Sat. (we sell Honda and Hyundai) Limited no nav 26k. Kills the Accord in feature content and performance compared to the 190 EXL Accord. 35hwy mileage on the EPA sticker. Seats are a little flatter and don't offer the same lateral support. Car looks great was a dark blue-gray metallic. Been a Honda gut for 10 years and I would drive this car.

Hyundai Sonata turbo, hybrid models to debut at New York show
02/17/2010, 5:09 PMBy Drew Johnson
The 2011 Hyundai Sonata made its debut late last year at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but only one engine variant graced the show floor – a 198 horsepower (200 on the SE model) 2.4L direct-injection four-cylinder. However, that base engine will soon be joined by two new powertrians, with both slated to debut at the New York Auto Show.
Thanks to a Tweet on the company’s official Twitter site, it has been revealed that Hyundai will take the wraps off turbo and hybrid variants of the 2011 Sonata at March’s New York Auto Show.
Not much is known about either model, but the turbo model will use a direct-injection four-cylinder and replace the typical V6 as the Sonata’s top engine offering. Although Hyundai uses a turbocharged 2.0L in the Genesis coupe, the new mill will likely be based on Hyundai’s 2.4L direct-injection unit, although a slightly smaller displacement engine wouldn’t be a huge shock. As the naturally aspirated Sonata generates up to 200 horsepower, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the turbo model making something in the 240-250 horsepower range while still achieving close to 30 mpg.
Even less is known about the Sonata hybrid, but some form of lithium power is expected with fuel economy sure to top the 40 mpg mark. Check back for more coverage on both models starting March 31

Maxima has much more upscale interior almost equal or better than Infiniti with Brutish Euro looks.
i dont think it will have any impact on Maxima sales.
Just compare Sonata dials with Maxima. I am not going into Seating.
Truthaboutcar has tested Sonata in korea. they say it is not quiet once speed goes above 65mph. and it is hardly sporty. offcourse TSX can be upgraded with Euro Sport suspension.
ES-350 is a boat but it has Lexus finess.

It's nice that Hyundai tries to compare itself to other sedans not in its market but the bottom line is that it still is a family sedan that has to compete with the likes of the Camcord and some good domestic offerings. The one very lucky thing for Hyundai is that this launch is happening right at the time Toyota has its issue with the Camry.

I saw one of these over the weekend in Savannah and I must say that it looks really great in person. I hated the huge grille in pics but it looks fine IRL...

you can build your own sonata on hyundai's website now.
what sucks is if you pick the SE (sporty model) you cant even get heated seats and the navi doesnt come with a back up camera. only on the Limited can you get those.

But that's what we get for wanting to buy a car off a lot. I wish there were two sets of rules:
1. If they spec the car and it's sitting on a lot, the manufacturer gets to make the rules on options
2. If I want to enter a contract to build a car the way I want it, I can order any option a la carte ... But unless the car comes damaged to the dealer I have to buy the car or forfeit a deposit equal to whatever the wonky option list might cause the dealer to lose in having it sit around
Something like that. It's just off the top of my head.

...and for option 2 ^ give me the same discount I would have gotten had the car been on the lot and not rape me on the price cause you have to order it from the factory.
