Hyundai: Ioniq 5 News

After the 45 Concept’s prototype homage to the Hyundai Pony, the first car that used the automaker's logo in 1975, the South Korean brand has now unveiled the IONIQ 5 that celebrates the connection between past, present, and future in series production.
30 photos

The first vehicle unveiled under Hyundai's IONIQ sub-brand is part of the company's pledge to redefine the “electric mobility lifestyle,” which has an extremely broad scope and includes sub-brands such as IONIQ itself or HTWO, as well as major technology advancements like the introduction of the E-GMP electric vehicle architecture.

IONIQ 5 is a positive example of the mindset, morphing into series production with a design that strongly resembles the 45 Concept and has midsize CUV traits to make it attractive for a wide range of customers. Better yet, the daring styling hasn’t been impacted by the bespoke proportions or the fact that the IONIQ 5 resides on a very long wheelbase of 3,000 mm (118.1 inches), signaling an interesting “EV specific typology” for upcoming vehicles that will also make use of the new E-GMP platform.

Certain traits will make the IONIQ 5 pretty unmistakable, such as the pixel-like daytime running lights (DRLs) that will probably become a signature of the brand (along with the clusters in the rear) or the 20-inch aero-optimized wheels. As far as dimensions go, this EV is 4,635 millimeters (182.5 inches) long, 1,890 mm (74.4 in) wide and 1,605 mm (63.2 in) tall. The launch is scheduled for the “first half of 2021,” but Hyundai hasn't revealed which markets may or may not receive it.

Inside, the IONIQ 5 claims to harbor what Hyundai calls a “Living Space.” It consists of a Universal Island (a 140-mm/5.51-in sliding center console), a flat floor (with batteries stored underneath), electronically adjustable and reclining front seats, as well as numerous “sustainably sourced materials” (PET bottles, plant-based or natural wool yarns, eco-leather, etc.). All in all, there are nine exterior shades (five of them inspired by nature and exclusive to the IONIQ 5) and three interior themes.

Hyundai will equip the IONIQ 5 with a range of powertrains that include two battery options (58 kWh or 72.6 kWh) and two electric motor choices (single RWD or dual AWD). The flagship option with the largest battery and AWD is capable of delivering up to 225 kW (302 hp) and 605 Nm (446 lb-ft). It’s enough for a sprint to 62 mph (100 kph) in 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 115 mph (185 kph). Meanwhile, the RWD with the largest battery will have a WLTP-rated range of around 480 km (298 miles).

Other highlights include the dual-cockpit arrangement featuring a pair of 12-inch screens for the instrument gauges and infotainment screen, the Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR HUD), the first-ever Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2), and the promised high-speed charging feature. The latter comes courtesy of the dual 400V/800V configuration of E-GMP, so the IONIQ 5 can sip electric juice at up to 350 kW for a 10 to 80% recharge in just 18 minutes.

Do not adjust your screen brightness or call your optometrist—that image above is not a rendering. It's not a depiction of a concept car, either. As futuristic and cyberpunk as it may appear, this is your first glimpse at the very production-ready 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, the first vehicle from Hyundai's new Ioniq sub-brand and visually in a different ionosphere from the humdrum Ioniq range of affordable electrified compact cars that preceded it. This is roundly one of the most significant new Hyundais we've seen since the 2011 redesign of the Sonata, a car that ushered in a new era for Hyundai/Kia design and inarguably elevated the Korean manufacturer onto the same playing field of Toyota and Honda.

© Motor Trend Staff 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5

Multiple Battery and Motor Combinations

With the Ioniq 5, Hyundai is now a step beyond its Japanese competitors on the EV front, too. The crossover arrives with a choice of either a 58- or 72.6-kWh battery pack, and a further choice of either a single rear-mounted motor driving the rear wheels or a dual front-and-rear motor setup affording all-wheel drive. In its most potent powertrain combination—dual motors, the 72.6-kWh battery—the Ioniq 5 scoots around with a combined 301 hp and 446 lb-ft, allowing for mostly-silent runs from zero to 62 mph in a quick 5.2 seconds. Keep the big battery but ditch the front motor, and that output drops to a more than reasonable 214 hp and 258 lb-ft, and the 0-62 mph time extends to 7.4 seconds.

With the smaller battery, the dual-motor setup spins out a combined 232 hp and 446 lb-ft for a 6.1-second 0-62 mph run. In the lowliest (and presumably most affordable) configuration, the single-motor, rear-wheel-drive, standard battery Ioniq 5's power is unchanged over the big-battery's 214 hp and 258 lb-ft, though 0-62 mph is the slowest at a still-reasonable 8.5 seconds. Regardless of how you spec it, the Ioniq 5 tops out at 115 mph.

At the moment, Hyundai's only talking range for the specific configuration of the 72.6 kWh battery and single rear motor, claiming an impressive WLTP-rated range of between 292 and 298 miles. Expect the official EPA range to differ here in the U.S. Here's a neat little tidbit—if you do happen to brick your Ioniq 5 on an over-enthusiastic impromptu road trip, an optional solar roof panel can trickle charge the car for some extra range, giving you a shot at reaching a charger.

© Motor Trend Staff

That's only for emergencies and a small passive charge—how the Hyundai performs at the plug is what matters. Crucially, the Ioniq 5 supports both 400-volt and 800-volt charging as standard without the need for plug adaptors, and both levels are packaged in as standard. On a 350-kW charger, the battery can be charged from 10- to 80-percent in just 18 minutes—in an ideal environment, of course. According to Hyundai and WLTP, it takes just five minutes to suck down enough electrons for 62 miles of range. Once on the move, drivers can use the Ioniq 5 as a large mobile battery pack, with built-in vehicle-to-load function that charges smaller stuff like electric bicycles, scooters, and camping gear, among other stuff.

The Ioniq 5 Is Quite Attractive ...

Frankly, this compact crossover is one of most intriguing new EVs we've seen based on styling and aesthetics alone; with its angular, scalloped bodywork and the retrofuturistic Alfa Romeo SZ-aping front grille, the Ioniq 5 is a bright paint job away from being carjacked by some cybernetically-modified criminal in the Cyberpunk 2077 video game.

Hyundai claims the Ioniq 5 pulls inspiration from the compact Pony—the first car Hyundai ever exported to North America—but rides on a deceptively long-ish 118-inch wheelbase that provides an impressive segment-straddling interior volume. Overall, there's a sense of homogeneity, made possible by flush door handles, a lack of front grille space, and the use of Hyundai's first clamshell hood. Really, this is a picture-perfect production translation of the dramatic Hyundai 45 concept that bowed back in 2019.

It's not quite as futuristic inside, but it sure looks like a nice if not anodyne place to spend your commute. As is the case with most EVs coming to market, the Ioniq 5 makes good use of the available flat-floor packaging, and introduces a sliding center console island that frees up additional passenger space. Passenger comfort seems to be king in the 5, as in the pursuit of that intangible interior real estate, the front seats are 30-percent thinner in construction for the rear occupant's precious knees and/or feet.

If you do find yourself pressed up against some interior surface, at least you'll know it's eco-friendly; much of what you touch on the inside is composed of green-sky stuff like recycled PET plastic, natural wool, eco-processed leather and "bio-paint" that makes use of plant extracts instead of condensed animal souls—at least that's what we presume. Strangely, Hyundai's rather bullish on the Ioniq's infotainment set-up, but the dual-screen layout is right on-par with what we've seen on other new EVs like the upcoming Nissan Ariya. Expect a full suite of EV-focused features like pre-charging, route planning, and charge finder.

What we don't know yet is how much all this futuristic finery will cost, but we don't expect it to start beneath the $30,000 waterline; it may end up shading the similarly sized but more powerful (and larger-battery) Ford Mustang Mach-E's price scale. Production apparently begins next month, with the U.S.' allotment beginning in the second half of this year. Stay tuned for updates on all this and official EPA ratings.

Looks like a winner. Other than a roof that opens (and possibly the nameplate), checks every box I would look for in an EV/car. Flat floor and moveable console like the Ariya - guess it's going to be a trend for all new EVs. V2L is infinitely more useful than camp mode; look at what happened in Texas, and the F-150 Hybrid's usefulness during the outage (RAV4 Prime also has a 1.5kW plug, but it's harder to find...)

If Hyundai prices this right, and the batteries don't explode, they will likely sell every single one of them.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric hatchback was only just unveiled last night, and already Hyundai is driving around test cars completely undisguised. And while our spy photographer's shots don't reveal any special details, they do give us a look at the car in another color: in this case a simple gloss black.

Besides being nice to see the car in more than one hue, this does tell us something interesting about the car's body cladding. Instead of the usual matte, charcoal black plastic most wannabe crossover models use, the Ioniq 5 has a silvery gray color. It makes for a striking contrast against the dark black paint; it almost looks like it's wearing a tuxedo.

This also seems to be roughly the same trim level as the reveal car, as evidenced by its big 20-inch wheels. The pixelated headlights and taillights look even more unique in reality than the studio images. We can also see how the creased bodywork looks with different lighting and reflections, and it's a standout feature in real life.

The Ioniq 5 will go on sale in the U.S. later this year with one of two battery packs, and either a single rear motor or dual motors. It features a spacious interior with flat floor. It also has 800-volt fast charging that allows it to recharge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes, and it can even power appliances.

The proportions look almost close to a VW Golf. But it looks good. All depends on the pricing now, and how their dealerships are going to promote this.

There has been a gigantic gap, in both size and price, between electric cars in this country. Choices like the Chevy Bolt EV and Hyundai Kona Electric are reasonably affordable, but they're small and their interior sparse for the money. Above them — way above them – are high-priced luxury choices like the Tesla Model S and X, Audi E-Tron, Jaguar I-Pace and Porsche Taycan.

It's really no surprise that the Tesla Model 3 has taken the country by storm. It fit into this electric gap. Well, at least in terms of price. Though wildly successful, the Model 3 is still a sedan and Americans want something that looks like an SUV. There is indeed the Tesla Model Y, but at present, it starts around $50,000 and therefore beyond the aforementioned gap. That hasn't always been the case, but for now ...

Enter the Ford Mustang Mach-E, followed by the Nissan Ariya, Volkswagen ID.4 and, as of today, the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Chevrolet even spruced up the Bolt in terms of size and interior ambiance, even if it doesn't quite line up with the others as you're about to see. Each of these represents a significantly different take on a reasonably affordable EV crossover, but apart from the Chevy, they're all roughly the same length and have roughly the same amount of power to start. There's also an awful lot we don't yet know about the Ioniq 5, Ariya and ID.4, which is why there are a lot of TBAs listed in the graph below. Still, this is all we know at present and figured it would help put this emerging class of "electric gap" fillers into perspective.

Performance

Say what you want about electric cars, but they seem to be bringing rear-wheel drive back into vogue. Something named "Mustang" sending its electrons rearward should be obvious, but a Volkswagen or Hyundai? That's pretty cool.

Also, the thing that stands out in this comparison is how the combinations of power, driven wheels and battery size are not consistent. For example, adding an additional motor to provide all-wheel drive results in a massive increase in horsepower and torque for the Ariya, an increase in torque but not horsepower for the Mach-E, and no change whatsoever for the Ioniq 5. Meanwhile, adding a larger battery massively increases output for the Ioniq 5, increases horsepower but not torque for the Mach-E, and does absolutely nothing for the Ariya. I don't know why this is, but it's fascinating and I'll be looking for answers. Stay tuned (or feel free to explain).

Battery Size

Chevrolet, Ford and Nissan report "usable" capacity for their batteries, as opposed to the "gross" total you see with Volkswagen. For myriad reasons, an electric car does not use its full charge and as such, certain car companies think its better to report the amount the car actually has at its disposal. Makes sense to us. Unfortunately, it does make comparisons like these a little tricky. Questions to Hyundai regarding whether the Ioniq 5's kWh numbers are usable or gross figures were not answered during an international press event.

Car Size

The Ioniq 5's dimensions are peculiar. It has the length and width of the Ariya, a pretty SUV-ish thing, but it has the height of the low-slung Mustang Mach-E. This speaks to the new Ioniq sure looking like a hatchback despite "crossover" being thrown about. But that's not the weird bit: check out the wheelbase. As we pointed out in the Ioniq 5 reveal story, that wheelbase is longer than the Palisade's. It's about 9 inches longer than the Ariya and ID.4. Hyundai didn't release interior dimensions, but we expect there to be a stunning amount of back seat legroom available. That seems to come at the expense of cargo capacity, which is Kona-esque at 18.8 cubic-feet. However, that same back seat is said to slide, meaning there is actually more cargo room available.

The dimensions also reveal just how much smaller the Bolt EUV is. I thought of not including it here, but for reference, why not? I also started to include the Model Y, but it's considerably larger and more expensive, only available with all-wheel drive, battery capacities (be them usable or gross) are not listed on Tesla's consumer site, nor are horsepower and torque figures. Shrug emoji. Moving on.

Conclusions

Honestly, with all those TBAs, there's not much to mine here. Yet. That should change in the coming months. Each of these new EVs is intriguing, though, with the Mustang Mach-E having already proven to be excellent. The electric gap is finally being filled, and not just with bland, dorky econocars. The Ioniq 5 is a wild 1980s pastiche; the Ariya an avant garde Murano for the 2020s; the Mach-E channels the Mustang; the ID.4 is, well, at least it's more characterful than a Tiguan. Things are getting interesting.

Five years after revealing the Ioniq liftback, Hyundai is getting serious about EVs with the first-ever nameplate from the Ioniq sub-brand of electric vehicles. Confirmed to arrive stateside for the 2022 model year, the hatchback-styled crossover in the photo gallery is hailed as a disruptor thanks to 800V charging and vehicle-to-load capability.
55 photos

A compact utility vehicle based on the all-new Electric Global Modular Platform that Kia utilizes in the EV6, the Ioniq 5 targets a range of 300 miles (483 kilometers) for the single-motor drivetrain, 269 miles (433 kilometers) for the dual-motor drivetrain, and 244 miles (393 kilometers) for the range-topping Limited AWD. Every single option has a top speed of 115 miles per hour (185 kilometers per hour) and tows 1,500 pounds (680 kilograms).

Tesla, which is the company to beat in the EV world, fares a little better in both respects. The Model Y Long Range is EPA-rated at 326 miles (525 kilometers) while the Class II tow hitch is capable of towing up to 3,500 pounds (1,588 kilograms) at the expense of driving range, but on the other hand, $51,990 for the entry-level spec is a bit on the expensive side of EVs.

Hyundai still hasn’t confirmed the asking price of the all-new Ioniq 5, which offers the longest wheelbase in the automaker’s U.S. lineup at 118.1 inches compared to 113.8 inches for the Model Y Long Range. Based on the South Korean automaker’s pricing strategy in comparison to Honda and Toyota, it’s pretty obvious that the single-motor variant with the highest range estimate will undercut the e-crossover that Tesla manufactures in Fremont.

U.S. models feature a 77.4-kWh battery regardless of drivetrain option, and the output figures for the base model are 225 horsepower plus 258 pound-feet (350 Nm) of torque. At the other end of the spectrum, the Limited AWD is much obliged to produce 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet (605 Nm).

The zero-emissions vehicle states will initially receive the Ioniq 5, along with Texas, Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. A broader rollout will bring the jacked-up hatchback to a wider audience next year, and Hyundai is looking into a subscription service for Ioniq 5 customers as a means to make EV ownership more compelling in the future.

On that note, what can American motorists expect from Hyundai after this fellow here? The BEV lineup has two more nameplates in the offing according to the South Korean automaker, starting with a mid-size sedan by the name of Ioniq 6. After that, the Ioniq 7 large utility vehicle will join the lineup.

Hyundai has fully detailed the 2022 Ioniq 5 for the Australian market and released a full gallery of the local-spec model. It has also confirmed that the initial allocation has sold out.

The new EV will be sold Down Under in one trim level with two available powertrains. Kicking off the range is the 2WD version that’s equipped with a single electric motor powering the rear axle and producing 214 hp (160 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque. This variant is priced from AU$71,900 ($52,877).

Topping out the local Ioniq 5 range is the AWD variant, priced from AU$75,900 and complete with a 207 hp (155 kW) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) electric motor at the rear and a 94 hp (70 kW) and 188 lb-ft (255 Nm) motor at the front, combining to produce 302 hp (225 kW) and 446 lb-ft (605 Nm). Like the 2WD model, it features a 72.6 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack from SK Innovation and starts at AU$75,900 ($55,815).

Both models are underpinned by Hyundai’s 800-volt architecture meaning they can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 17 minutes and 16 seconds through a 350 kW ultra-fast charger. The 2WD version has a quoted range of 451 km (280 miles) while the AWD can travel 430 km (267 miles) on a charge.

Hyundai Australia opened orders for the Ioniq 5 on Tuesday morning and almost instantly, the website crashed and the 240 examples initially allocated to the local market were sold. The automaker is working on securing a second allocation of 160 cars to meet demand with more than 13,000 locals already expressing their interest in the EV.

While the two models initially available come with the flagship 72.6 kWh battery pack, the general manager of product planning at Hyundai Australia, Andrew Tuitahi, has revealed to Drive that a cheaper variant could hit the market soon. It will likely be the same as entry-level models sold overseas and fitted with a smaller 58 kWh battery and single and dual electric motor configurations offering up 167 hp (125 kW) and 232 hp (173 kW).

What about charging this isn't universal? Looks like it has a normal CCS plug which is what every non-Tesla vehicle has.

We recently drove the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, and our full first drive review is coming later this week. One piece of information we didn’t have at the time was its price. Now, Hyundai has announced Ioniq 5 pricing for all three trims in both rear- and all-wheel drive, along with pricing for the standard-range version that will arrive later. Pricing starts at $40,925, which includes $1,225 in destination fees, but doesn’t account for the available $7,500 federal tax credit or other local incentives.

The first models to come available later this month will be long-range versions, with a 77.4-kilowatt-hour battery good for 303 miles of driving on a charge for rear-drive models, or 256 miles with all-wheel drive. The RWD version uses a single motor providing 225 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The dual-motor, AWD Ioniq 5 provides a total of 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque. The standard range SE RWD, with a 58-kWh battery, 168 hp and 220 miles of driving range, is expected in spring 2022.

The Ioniq 5 will come in three trim levels: SE, SEL and Limited. The price breakdown follows:
  • SE RWD Standard Range: $40,925
  • SE RWD: $44,875
  • SE AWD: $48,375
  • SEL RWD: $47,125
  • SEL AWD: $50,625
  • Limited RWD: $51,825
  • Limited AWD: $55,725
The Ioniq 5 SE comes standard with 800-volt, 350-kW fast-charging capability, Hyundai’s Highway Drive Assist suite with stop-and-go adaptive cruise control and machine learning, a 12.3-inch instrument display and 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Hyundai’s Bluelink connected car technology, and a number of active safety features. Also included is two years of free 30-minute charging sessions on the Electrify America network.

Moving up to the SEL trim adds Highway Drive Assist II, which adds features like automatic lane change and a lane positioning system that adjusts the Ioniq’s lane placement if crowded by another driver. The SEL also includes leatherette seating, ambient interior lighting, power folding side mirrors, a heated steering wheel and power liftgate.

The Limited trim adds 20-inch wheels, a large sunroof, a head-up display with augmented reality, Bose audio system, surround and blind-spot cameras and remote smart parking assist.
2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 price starts at $40,925 before incentives (autoblog.com)

We've officially reached the point where there's a decent selection of compelling five-passenger electric SUVs with decent range. The Volkswagen ID.4, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Tesla Model Y are becoming increasingly commonplace sights on American roads, and they're about to be joined by the Kia EV6 and its sharp-looking crosstown rival, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5. Sharp turns out to be a particularly apt description of the Hyundai's distinctly creased styling, which features the mark of Zorro on its flanks, pixelated Minecraft detailing, and a chonky stance that benefits from an uncommonly long wheelbase, with stubby overhangs and sizable wheels pushed out nearly flush with the fenders. It's refreshing to see a unique take on the two-box crossover shape, but is there more to the Ioniq 5 than fresh-faced smart looks?

Like its chief rivals, the Ioniq 5 comes in a single-motor rear-drive configuration or a dual-motor all-wheel-drive layout. At launch, all flavors of the Ioniq 5 will be equipped with an extended-range lithium-ion battery that packs 77.4 kilowatt-hours of gross capacity. (Hyundai has yet to disclose the usable capacity, which is what we normally report, so for now we'll estimate that at 70.0 kilowatt-hours.) In rear-drive guise, the Ioniq 5 gets 225 horsepower, 258 pound-feet of torque, and a healthy 303 miles of range, along with an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of 114 MPGe. The all-wheel-drive varieties deliver a respectable 256 miles of EPA range, a combined output of 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque, and an EPA combined score of 98 MPGe.

2021 Hyundai Kona Electric Review, Pricing, and Sp
Four drive modes are offered: Eco, Normal, Sport, and Snow, all of which tweak the dials on throttle sensitivity and predicted range. Eco seems perfectly acceptable for routine driving, but it does dull air-conditioning performance. Normal makes for the better choice if speeds or temperatures are a bit higher. Steering-mounted "shift" paddles adjust the strength of the regenerative braking through five steps: none, 1 through 3, and i-Pedal. The latter setting is much more aggressive (and suitable for mountain-road hijinks) than anything seen on the Kona EV, and it's robust enough to bring the Ioniq 5 to a full stop without having to touch the brake pedal. Punch the accelerator in Sport mode and there's enough seamless thrust to believe Hyundai's claimed sub-5.0-second 60-mph time for the all-wheel-drive version.

But the speed that really matters is the time it takes to inject juice into the batteries. Here the Ioniq 5 reigns supreme compared to all of its competition, save the related Kia EV6. Its 697-volt battery pack and 350-kW DC fast-charging capability have no equal this side of the vastly more expensive Porsche Taycan, Audi E-Tron GT, or Lucid Air. This Hyundai absolutely gets with the program at one of Electrify America's top-tier 350-kW charge stalls, where it takes just 18 minutes to charge the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent. At home, its 10.9-kW on-board charger works with 240-volt equipment to refill a dead battery in 8.5 hours. But no one drives their personal EV down to zero, so Hyundai's estimate of just under seven hours for an overnight top-up from 10 percent seems more relevant.

The Ioniq 5's strut front and multilink rear suspension is calibrated for a smooth ride. A Limited fitted with 20-inch wheels shod with 255/45R-20 tires readily smothered all manner of rough pavement and undulating asphalt, with no undue harshness or head-toss. This suspension is pleasantly limber, though its compliance might just teeter on the edge of excess for those that prefer a firm, tied-down ride. None of this prevents the Ioniq 5 from taking a tenacious set through bends, where its wide-for-an-EV tires and low-slung battery pack help it feel stable and planted. The trouble comes from the lack of feel and feedback transmitted through the steering wheel itself, which tends to mask the buildup of forces and make the Ioniq 5 feel less responsive than it really is.

Inside, that steering wheel juts from a dashboard that possesses all the charm of an open-office floorplan. Two identical 12.3-inch screens are positioned side by side, creating the impression of a dual-desktop-monitor setup. If you're thinking the interior is nowhere near as inspiring as the exterior, you're onto something. For all that, the various controls are laid out quite logically, and it's easy to glance about and decipher what everything does. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are present, but the lack of wireless capability stands out because the console's distance from the dash makes cords hard to wrangle. That said, the Bose premium audio system proved to be fantastic, breathing life into a favorite Spotify playlist that rarely sounds this crisp and distinct. The hushed ambient noise of the EV powertrain might be helping the cause there.

Front headroom and legroom are abundant, but the steering wheel could stand to extend another inch so taller drivers could fully exploit the available seat travel. Those in back enjoy 39.4 inches of rear legroom, which is some 1.3 inches more than the Mach-E and 1.8 inches better than the ID.4. Credit the 118.1-inch wheelbase—longer than anything else in the Hyundai lineup, including the Palisade three-row SUV—for that. Farther back, that extra rear-seat legroom takes a bite out of seats-up cargo space. The Hyundai's 27 cubic feet trails the others, which straddle either side of 30 cubic feet. But its 59 cubic feet with seats down nearly ties the Mach-E, even though the VW pips them both. Up front, Ioniq 5's cursory frunk hardly seems worth the bother at just 1 cubic foot.

Three familiar trim levels are offered—SE, SEL, and Limited—and that choice is independent of the drive layout you select. The exception is the 168-hp, 220-mile standard-range SE RWD loss leader that's priced at $40,925 and won't be available for some months. Just as well, because the long-range RWD SE with 303 miles of range and 225 horsepower costs $44,875 and is heading to dealers as you read this. The all-in 320-hp Limited AWD we drove sits atop the range at $55,725. In the end, the sharp-looking 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a compelling electric SUV because it combines a goodly amount of range and uncommonly quick DC fast-charging capability with a spacious interior and a smooth ride. As the country's charging infrastructure continues to improve, it just might be the first non-Tesla to encourage you to push the boundaries of range and charging on an electrified road trip.

Hyundai is getting ready to throw a number of enhancements at their fully electric IONIQ 5 for the 2023 model year. Chief among them will be a new 77.4 kWh battery, to go with several upgrades and new features meant to improve your overall driving experience.
7 photos

For the first time ever, the IONIQ 5 will come with digital exterior mirrors and a digital rearview mirror – the Digital Center Mirror (DCM) is said to provide an unobstructed, panoramic rear-facing view of the vehicle. The camera itself is installed right below the IONIQ 5’s rear spoiler.

As for the Digital Side Mirrors (DSM), which are already available on Korean spec cars, they’ll also be available in Europe for the first time. The DSM can also reduce air resistance and should provide drivers with an enhanced rear view, even in bad weather conditions.

“IONIQ 5 has proved to be highly successful in the 12 months since its launch, both in terms of sales and brand building,” said Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, VP of marketing and product at Hyundai Motor Europe.

“The segment is growing increasingly competitive, and we will be offering enhanced features to defend our position as technology leader in the automotive industry,” he added.

Another new feature worth mentioning is battery conditioning, which will enable the IONIQ 5 to automatically adapt its battery temperature while on the move, so as to ensure optimal charging conditions when it finally arrives at a charging point, resulting in better real-life charging performance regardless of external temperatures.

This function will activate automatically when a charging point is entered into the vehicle’s sat-nav system using connected routing.

Also new are the Smart Frequency Dampers (SFD), which can improve the responsiveness of the rear axle suspension in order to increase overall ride comfort and improve both body control and handling.

The 2023 model year IONIQ 5 will be available to order in Europe from late Spring.

https://carbuzz.com/news/hyundai-ion...-with-new-trim

One-of-a-kind styling, a spacious interior, and outstanding driving dynamics - did Hyundai really need to provide more reasons to buy the new Ioniq 5? Well, that hasn't stopped the Korean automaker from offering a new, more affordable trim level below the existing SE model to attract more buyers to the EV lifestyle. The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 now offers an SE Standard Range model, which packs a smaller 58-kWh battery. For comparison, all other trim levels get a larger 77.4 kWh pack.

The Standard Range uses the same battery found in the Ioniq's sister car the Kia EV6 Light. As with that car, the SE Standard Range has a single electric motor at the rear generating 168 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The larger battery SE model (and all other RWD models) have 225 hp and the same amount of torque. This new trim is only available with rear-drive and without the all-wheel-drive dual-motor option.

Hyundai didn't publish performance figures for the new trim, but based on the EV6 Light, the Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range should hit 60 mph in around eight seconds. The larger battery car is a bit quicker, taking around 7.1 seconds to hit 60 mph.

In addition to dropping 57 hp compared to the larger battery car, the Standard Range also includes (as the name suggests) a lower driving range. Whereas the 77.4-kWh battery enables 303 miles on a single charge (256 miles with the dual motor setup), the 58-kWh pack will drain itself in 220 miles.

Though it drops 83 miles in range, Hyundai says the smaller battery should charge quicker on a Level 2 plug, going from 10-100 percent in around 5 hours (compared to 6 hours and 43 minutes for the larger battery). The DC fast charge estimate remains the same at 18 minutes from 10-80 percent charge.

Output and range differences aside, it appears this new Standard Range trim is identical to the larger battery SE model in every other regard. So if you're ok with a drop in power and driving range, perhaps the new trim level is worth the cost savings. The Standard Range is the cheapest way to buy an Ioniq 5, starting at $39,950 before any incentives or destination charges. That's significantly cheaper than the SE, which starts at $44,000.

A Hyundai spokesperson told CarBuzz, "the Ioniq 5 Standard Range is now available. We have sold units and have more on their way to the dealers." We know this won't be the last addition to the Ioniq 5 family with an upcoming Ioniq 5 N set to offer over 580 hp.

Hyundai’s N Division is about to tap into the world of electric vehicles for the first time ever with a dedicated model that will be known as the Ioniq 5 N, which is expected to premiere in a few months and launch shortly after, likely for the 2023MY.
7 photos

Spy shots and videos of the sporty crossover have previewed the design, and now we know some juicy details about the powertrain too. It will have in the region of 600 horsepower combined, Albert Biermann, the brand’s current technical advisor, told Australia’s Drive during a press conference.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 “will be much faster [than the i30 N]. How could it be slower? It has almost 600 horsepower,” Biermann said, adding that the total output produced by the front- and rear-mounted electric motors is still unknown. “It’s not finalized, it could be 580, 600, 620 horsepower. It’s a lot.

As a matter of fact, it is more than what the Kia EV6 GT, one of its platform-sharing siblings, has on tap. That model comes with 576 hp (585 ps / 430 kW) and 546 lb-ft (740 Nm) of torque at a hard push of the throttle. This allows it to keep going all the way up to 161 mph (259 kph) and to deal with the naught to 60 mph (0-97 kph) acceleration in just 3.4 seconds. The juice is provided by the 77.4 kWh battery pack that features an 800-volt electric system.

After speaking about the output and referring to the sound produced by the Ioniq 5 N, Biermann went on to confirm that the model will boast a Drift Mode. At the push of a button, the high-performance EV will have more power sent to the rear wheels, which will enable controlled drifts, a function that should only be engaged on closed courses.

Hyundai Motor Company's IONIQ 5 N - N brand's first high-performance, all-electric model - made its world premiere at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, England. IONIQ 5 N represents N brand's electrification future and a new way for high-performance enthusiasts to electrify their passion for driving on road and track.

The new vehicle represents Hyundai's long-standing legacy of offering high-quality mobility alongside driver-focused N models. N brand made a comeback to WRC in 2014 and its subsequent success with multiple world championships infused Hyundai with a winning DNA, reflected in the N high-performance models. This momentum carries forward with electrification, as the award-winning E-GMP-based IONIQ 5 provides the perfect foundation to create N's first high-performance EV.

IONIQ 5 N establishes Hyundai N as the technology powerhouse within Hyundai Motor and spearheads advanced technologies to be shared with all Hyundai EVs with the strategic goal of increasing Hyundai's overall competitiveness. IONIQ 5 N represents the first step to this strategic shift with additional electric N models to follow.

"Hyundai N spearheads the technological leadership of Hyundai Motor Company," said Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company. "N brand's winning combination of technological know-how and motorsport experience is pushing the limits of vehicle performance, which has most recently resulted in IONIQ 5 N, a gamechanger for electric high performance. Key developments around this vehicle will further strengthen the competitiveness of all Hyundai models going forward. This is why N brand exists."

IONIQ 5 N combines the standard model's Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) with N's motorsport-bred technologies and leverages N's expertise from electrified 'Rolling Labs' (e.g., RM20e, RN22e and N Vision 74) to maximize the EV's high-performance capabilities and ensure it meets N's three performance pillars: 'Corner Rascal,' 'Racetrack Capability' and 'Everyday Sportscar'

"IONIQ 5 N, was developed to take driving fun to a new level by utilizing the latest technologies available. Starting with IONIQ 5 N, N brand aims to deliver N's signature fun driving experience regardless of petrol, electric or hydrogen," said Till Wartenberg, Vice President and Head of N Brand and Motorsport at Hyundai Motor Company. "To accomplish this, we've closely monitored the voices of our N fans in order to fine-tune our first all-electric N with the goal of electrifying the driving passion of our most demanding N-thusiasts."

Dual-motor AWD with rally-inspired handling supports Corner Rascal capabilities

IONIQ 5 N's Corner Rascal capabilities begin with enhancements to the body-in-white (BIW) structure with 42 additional welding points and 2.1 meters of additional adhesives. The motor and battery mounting are reinforced while front and rear subframes are enhanced for lateral rigidity. World Rally Championship-inspired integrated drive axles (IDA) are applied both front and rear and reinforced to endure stronger electric motor torque while reducing unsprung mass together with the 21-inch forged aluminum wheels.

To enhance steering response and feedback, IONIQ 5 N's steering column has been strengthened for improved rigidity. Additionally, the vehicle features a specially tuned N R-MDPS (Rack-Mounted Motor-Driven Power Steering) system with a higher steering ratio and enhanced torque feedback. These enhancements result in a more direct and communicative steering experience that will instill greater confidence in drivers.

N Pedal was developed as a solution to address the inherent weight and size of EVs while aiming to achieve the responsive handling characteristics seen in Hyundai's championship-winning i20 N WRCs. This intelligent software function, found in IONIQ 5 N, is designed to provide instant turn-in behavior and enhanced throttle sensitivity. Drawing on similar technology used in i-Pedal's regenerative braking system, N Pedal prioritizes fast and exhilarating cornering over energy efficiency. By utilizing decelerative force, an aggressive weight transfer is created, resulting in sharper corner entry.

N Drift Optimizer helps to maintain the drift angle by balancing multiple vehicle controls responding to real-time inputs. The integrated Torque Kick Drift function allows the driver to simulate the clutch kick action of rear-wheel-driven ICE vehicles for driving scenarios that require more immediate drift initiation. This is a result of sophisticated electronic control technology.

N Torque Distribution provides fully variable front and rear torque distribution that can be adjusted to 11 levels. The e-LSD (electronic limited slip differential) at the rear axle optimizes cornering performance and control. Additional wheel sensors and broader damping capacity with increased damper size widens the performance range of the electronically controlled suspension.

Improved PE system, enhanced battery cooling and N Brake Regen bolster Racetrack Capability

This powerful EV benefits from several technical improvements. Its electric motors spin up to 21,000 RPM providing 478 kW / 650 PS with N Grin Boost engaged. This is a result of the two-stage inverter with increased energy efficiency for stronger power output from the new 84 kWh battery.

Several exclusive features aid track performance. N Grin Boost maximizes acceleration by a power increment of 10 seconds and N Launch Control provides three different traction levels for the fastest possible start, allowing drivers to launch their vehicle like a professional race car. Track SOC (state-of-charge) automatically calculates battery consumption per lap.

IONIQ 5 N sets a new benchmark for thermal management in severe racetrack conditions. Compared to its competitors, IONIQ 5 N boasts a higher resistance to heat induced power degradation - loss of maximum power due to overheating.

The enhanced battery thermal management system, with increased cooling area, better motor oil cooler and battery chiller. The independent radiators for the battery and motor maximize IONIQ 5 N's resistance to performance degradation before and during intense track driving.

Before driving, the driver can utilize N Battery Pre-conditioning to optimize the battery cells to the most power-efficient temperature by choosing between 'Drag' mode for a short burst of full power or 'Track' mode that optimizes the lowest possible battery temperature for more laps.

N Race feature further optimizes the EV's endurance on the circuit, giving drivers more direct control over the car's energy usage. N Race applies a motorsport-derived approach to maximizing resources for the fastest possible times. While this type of setting change would normally require a team of mechanics and equipment, IONIQ 5 N offers it at the convenience of a few button presses.

With N Race, drivers are given the strategic choice to prioritize 'Endurance' or 'Sprint.' 'Endurance' maximizes range on the racetrack. This is achieved by limiting the peak power, which results in a slower build-up of temperature. Comparatively, 'Sprint' prioritizes power and provides shorter bursts of full energy. This will help drivers accurately manage their energy strategy and create an ideal performance window to achieve their driving performance targets.

IONIQ 5 N boasts N-tuned brakes, which represent Hyundai's most powerful braking system. It features 400-mm diameter front discs with four-piston monobloc calipers and 360-mm rear discs. These brakes are constructed with new lightweight materials and optimized airflow for improved cooling efficiency. In addition, the regenerative (regen) braking system typically used for enhanced efficiency has been reinterpreted in IONIQ 5 N to enhance braking performance. It serves as the primary source of brake force, while the mechanical brakes supplement additional braking force when required, ensuring enhanced endurance on the track.

To address the harsh braking demands of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, Hyundai N engineers designed N Brake Regen, an N-specific region braking system developed specifically for IONIQ 5 N. It offers up to a maximum of 0.6 G decelerative force - an industry leading figure - through N Brake Regen alone and remains engaged under ABS activation with a maximum of 0.2 G. The risk of brake fade due to the EV's relative heaviness is minimized by maximizing regen braking power, which results in lower brake force applied to the mechanical brakes.

The seamless blending between the N Brake Regen and hydraulic brakes creates a smooth transition that is imperceptible to the driver. Moreover, left foot braking allows the brake and accelerator pedal to work at the same time when driving on the track.

State-of-the-art technology delivers shift feeling and emotional fun in an Everyday Sportscar

As an everyday sportscar, IONIQ 5 N delivers an engaging shift feeling and emotional driving through the integrated N e-shift and N Active Sound +. N e-shift provides a sense of control over power delivery and shift feeling while N Active Sound + works collectively to deliver not only a futuristic EV sound but also ICE-like engine and exhaust sounds that provide a more engaging experience behind the wheel. Together, they enhance the fun and joy of driving by simulating the jolt feel and sound of an ICE vehicle.

Many performance enthusiasts have been outspoken about the lack of driver feedback behind the wheel of many EVs. That's why Hyundai N engineers developed the N e-shift and N Active Sound + functions to deliver greater driver feedback and therefore more precise driver control of IONIQ 5 N's dynamic driving. The unique emphasis on precise power control differentiates N's approach to EV sound from past applications.

N e-shift simulates the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) of internal combustion engine (ICE) N cars. It simulates a gearshift by controlling motor torque output and simulates the jolt feeling between shifts. As a result, it provides a more precise, interactive driving experience that feels closer to ICEs than previous EVs.

N Active Sound+ is paired with N e-shift to enhance the driving experience of EVs by creating a more engaging and exciting sensory experience for the driver. It incorporates a 10-speaker system (eight internal, two external) that offers three distinct sound themes. The 'Ignition' theme simulates the sound of N's 2.0T engines and 'Evolution' provides a signature high-performance sound inspired by the RN22e. The 'Supersonic' theme is a unique concept inspired by twin-engine fighter jets, featuring variable volume during cornering. The objective of N Active Sound+ is to provide drivers with an acoustic reference to gauge the power being utilized.

IONIQ 5 N also is equipped with N Road Sense, which automatically recommends the activation of N Mode when double-curved road signs are detected, enabling drivers to enjoy every second of their drive to the fullest (EU only).

Like the standard IONIQ 5, its N variant is equipped with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), which allows the driver to use the stored energy from the EV's high-voltage battery to recharge devices, such as an e-bike, electrical camping equipment or domestic appliances - even when the vehicle is turned off.

Performance-enhancing design elements to inspire passionate driving

IONIQ 5 N's exterior adds many performance-enhancing design elements, such as contrasting black trim parts and a wing-type rear spoiler, which emphasize the sporty aspects of the standard model and maximize its circuit driving potential.

The N model further distinguishes itself from the standard IONIQ 5 with a change of proportions. It is 20 mm lower overall, 50 mm wider at the bottom to accommodate wider tires and 80 mm longer due to the more prominent diffuser.

At the front, there is a N Mask graphic fascia with functional mesh along with air curtain and air flaps for extra cooling. A lip spoiler runs across the lower part of the bumper to emphasize the car's slow-slung stance and convey its performance intent. The EV N-exclusive 'Luminous Orange' at the bottom of the black front bumper cover continues along the side skirts, giving the IONIQ 5 N a racetrack-ready look.

This impression is further reinforced by the forged 21-inch aluminum wheels that are wrapped in high-grip 275/35R21 Pirelli P-Zero tires for improved ride and handling and better grip in track performance.

At the rear, the prominent, N-only wing-type spoiler, along with orange-accented rear diffuser and air outlet, help control airflow to support optimal aerodynamic performance, further highlighting IONIQ 5 N's high-performance capability and adding to its aggressive styling. Integrated in the spoiler is a triangular N-only HMSL brake light. Below the rear hatch is an N-exclusive black bumper cover with checker flag reflector graphics. There is also a rear window wiper.

IONIQ 5 N's interior neatly conveys the N family look with the application of N-branded elements, including the steering wheel, seats, door scuff panels and metal pedals, etc., and is optimized for track driving.

The newly designed N steering wheel prominently features the N logo for the first time, flanked by N buttons that set the desired drive mode, arranged to suit the driver's preference. Driving modes can be customized and matched to each button in various combinations to maximize IONIQ 5 N's fun driving spirit. N Grin Boost button positioned at 3 o'clock allows instant and intuitive access to maximize acceleration and driving fun. Paddles are optimally positioned at driver's fingertips to engage N e-shift and N Pedal features.

IONIQ 5 N's center console is optimized for track driving with knee pads and shin support as well as a sliding armrest. An extension to the lower part of the console enhances rigidity to further support sport driving. For everyday use, it also offers a C-type USB, wireless charger and cupholders.

The N seats have reinforced bolsters, so that even if strong lateral acceleration occurs during sharp cornering, it firmly supports the upper and lower body to maintain a stable driving posture at all times. The N bucket seats are positioned about 20 mm lower compared to the basic specification, designed for customers who pursue high-performance drivability. N emblems are arranged front and rear of the seat with welcome lighting at front. The two-toned design theme of the bucket seats carries over to the rear.

Due to the nature of N driving, IONIQ 5 N's pedals are optimized for foot contact in track driving scenarios that involve oversteer, drifting and power slides, reducing the risk of foot slippage in two-foot driving. The footrest is optimized to maintain a stable driving posture at all times, including strong deceleration moments.

The new checker flag theme - a track-inspired riff on IONIQ 5's iconic parametric pixels - can be found on the door scuff panels metal pedals and footrest, representing N Brand's motorsport spirit.

Much like the standard IONIQ 5, sustainable materials are applied throughout IONIQ 5 N, including recyclable paperette door decorative garnish, BIO PET yarn from sugarcane, recycled PET yarn from recycled PET bottles, BIO TPO from sugarcane and eco processed leather. IONIQ 5 N also adds recycled tire pigment paint and recycled poly Alcantara seat cover cloth.

Yeah, I can do without the piped in 'engine' noises. Curious how/why the e-shift feeling.
Otherwise, I think it looks pretty good. I think the Ioniq looks a bit better than the EV6, just don't like the rear on the Kia.

If they want to make it faster and handle better, like their N cars, that's fine. But let's just live in the ev world for what they are. Faking the "engaging experience" just exacerbates what we're losing.

There's no reason for it to be slower with the eshift, that's a gimmick that can hopefully be turned off. Yet another thing from the marketing department that people don't actually want.

FWIW, you aren't "losing" anything by going EV. It's faster, handles well, and does everything just as good as a gas car while using less "fuel" to do it. The world record holder for Pikes Peak is an EV. The world record holder for nurburgring time is a hybrid, number 2 is a full EV.

Need to stop considering all EVs as just being glorified Nissan Leafs.

This fixes everything I didn’t like about the Ioniq 5. Aside from dealer markups I wonder if this will be more expensive than an EV6 GT.

And I agree with you Sam, for people that haven’t driven one these AWD 300+ HP EVs are incredibly quick and in many ways a superior experience to an ICE car.

Right now, mainstream EVs won’t replace the experience of an ICE sports car but it does create a different engagement that is still exciting.

I think it's so quirky looking that it's kinda cool... I like it. But I'm afraid dealers will have an ADM on this car and what kind of Hyundai dealership experience will one get during the lifetime of this vehicle?

275 wide tires. Wow!

I'm not going to shit in this thread, but i'm just gonna throw this out there...if nothing is being lost, why is Hyundai trying to make up an "engaging experience" with fake sounds and fake shifts?

This is 100% true but it's not far off. The benefits you can get from an EV make a normal car/truck into something really fun without sacrificing a ton. It's never going to be as fun as something like a 911 or whatever but my pickup truck can out accelerate just about everything on the road while maintaining the ability to carry plywood and tow a boat and carry my family around in comfort. All while costing me next to nothing to drive.

You probably wouldn't need any planned visits to the dealership after purchase. There's minimal servicing that needs to be done to one of these outside of warranty work. DIY the cabin filter every other year, take it elsewhere for tires when needed. That's about it.

I have no idea but I think it's dumb AF that they are doing it.

Maybe to sell to people who have some preconceived notion about EV's?

Not a direct comparison, but Subaru does it on their CVTs, simulated 'shifts' rather than just holding RPM in the optimal place.

Honestly, never underestimate the simplemindedness of the average person and the need to do gimmicky things to make them feel comfortable.

Maybe it really will add something to the experience. I have doubts it’s necessary when 600ho will basically rip your face off 😆

Hyundai revealed its all-new 2025 IONIQ 5 N electrified sports vehicle to North American media at a pre-show event for 2023 AutoMobility LA. IONIQ 5 N represents N brand's electrification vision and a fresh opportunity for performance enthusiasts to satisfy their driving passion on the road and track. IONIQ 5 N is the first electrified iteration for the Hyundai N brand, with future electrified N models to follow. The award-winning Hyundai E-GMP platform provided the perfect basis for its IONIQ 5 N high performance EV. IONIQ 5 N will be available at Hyundai dealers in March 2024.

"Hyundai N is a key driver of advanced technology expansion throughout Hyundai," said José Muñoz, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor North America. "N brand technology and motorsport success proves Hyundai's ability to push the envelope of vehicle performance and IONIQ 5 N represents a bold move forward in the level of electrified performance. We are confident that both current Hyundai customers and new buyers will be impressed with the exceptional performance and technology of our new IONIQ 5 N."

IONIQ 5 N combines the standard IONIQ 5 model's Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) with N motorsport technologies and leverages N expertise from electrified 'Rolling Labs' (e.g., RM20e, RN22e and N Vision 74). These allow Hyundai to maximize its performance capabilities and ensure it meets the three N performance pillars of 'Corner Rascal,' 'Racetrack Capability' and 'Everyday Sportscar'.

"IONIQ 5 N was developed to take driving fun to a new level by utilizing the latest technologies available," said Till Wartenberg, vice president and head of N Brand and Motorsport at Hyundai Motor Company. "Starting with IONIQ 5 N, N brand aims to deliver its signature fun driving experience regardless of petrol, electric or hydrogen. To accomplish this, we've closely monitored the voices of our N fans in order to fine-tune our first all-electric N with the goal of electrifying the driving passion of our most demanding N-thusiasts."

Dual-motor AWD with rally-inspired handling supports Corner Rascal capabilities

IONIQ 5 N Corner Rascal capabilities begin with enhancements to the body-in-white (BIW) structure with 42 additional welding points and 6.9 feet of additional structural adhesives. The motor and battery mounting are reinforced, while front and rear subframes are enhanced for lateral rigidity. World Rally Championship-inspired integrated drive axles (IDA) are applied front and rear and reinforced to endure stronger electric motor torque while reducing unsprung mass with 21-inch forged aluminum wheels.

To enhance steering response and feedback, the IONIQ 5 N steering system was strengthened for improved rigidity. The vehicle features a specially-tuned N R-MDPS (Rack-Mounted Motor-Driven Power Steering) system with a quicker steering ratio and enhanced torque feedback logic. These enhancements result in a more direct and communicative steering experience for greater driving confidence and feel.

N Pedal was developed to help address the inherent weight and size of an electric powertrain while achieving the responsive handling characteristics seen in Hyundai's championship-winning i20 N WRC cars. This intelligent software function, applied to IONIQ 5 N, is designed to provide instant turn-in behavior and enhanced throttle sensitivity. Drawing on similar technology used in i-Pedal's regenerative braking system, N Pedal prioritizes fast and exhilarating cornering over absolute energy efficiency. By utilizing decelerating force, aggressive weight transfer is positioned on the front axle, resulting in sharper, more confident corner turn-in.

N Drift Optimizer helps to maintain a desired drift angle by balancing multiple vehicle controls responding to real-time inputs. The integrated Torque Kick Drift function allows the driver to simulate the clutch-kick action of rear-wheel-driven internal combustion vehicles for scenarios where the driver desires more immediate drift initiation. This is a result of sophisticated, high-speed electronic control technology with reactions in milliseconds.

N Torque Distribution provides fully variable front and rear torque distribution that can be adjusted to 11 levels by the driver. The e-LSD (electronic limited-slip differential) at the rear axle optimizes cornering performance and control. Additional wheel sensors and broader damping ranges with increased damper size broadens the overall tuning envelope of the electronically-controlled suspension, ranging from Everyday Sportscar through full Racetrack Capability, two pillars of N performance.

Improved electric propulsion system with enhanced battery cooling and N Brake Regen

This powerful EV benefits from several technical improvements. Its electric motors spin up to 21,000 RPM, providing an estimated 641 horsepower (478 kW) with N Grin Boost engaged. This is a result of the two-stage inverter with increased energy efficiency for stronger power output from a new 84 kWh battery. Several exclusive features aid in track performance. N Grin Boost maximizes acceleration with extra power for a 10-second interval. N Launch Control automatically activates N Grin Boost during launch and provides three different traction levels for the fastest possible launch, allowing drivers to accelerate their vehicle like a professional race car. Track SOC (state-of-charge) automatically calculates battery consumption every lap.

IONIQ 5 N sets a new benchmark for thermal management in severe racetrack conditions. Compared to its competitors, IONIQ 5 N boasts a higher resistance to heat-induced power degradation - loss of maximum power due to excessive heat. The enhanced thermal management system uses increased cooling area and volume, enhanced motor oil cooling and a battery chiller. The performance of the battery thermal management system is also enhanced with the minimized heat transfer route from the battery cells to the cooling channel and the new gap filler with high thermal conductivity. The independent radiators for the battery and motor maximize IONIQ 5 N resistance to performance degradation both before and during intense track driving. Before driving, the driver can utilize N Battery Pre-conditioning to optimize battery cells to the most power-efficient temperature, choosing between 'Drag' mode for a short burst of full power or 'Track' mode that optimizes the lowest possible battery temperature for sustained lapping.

The N Race feature further optimizes endurance on the circuit, giving drivers more direct control over energy consumption. N Race applies a motorsport-derived approach to maximizing available resources for the fastest possible laps overall. While this type of setting change would normally require a full team of technicians and equipment, IONIQ 5 N offers it via convenient menu selection. With N Race, drivers are given the strategic choice to prioritize 'Endurance' or 'Sprint.' 'Endurance' maximizes range on the racetrack. This is achieved by limiting peak power, which results in a slower build-up of temperature. Comparatively, 'Sprint' prioritizes power and provides shorter bursts of full energy. This helps drivers accurately manage their energy strategy and creates an ideal performance window to achieve their performance targets.

IONIQ 5 N boasts N-tuned brakes, which represent Hyundai's most powerful braking system to date. It features 15.75 in. diameter front rotors with four-piston monobloc calipers and 14.2 in. rear rotors. These brakes are constructed with new lightweight materials and dedicated airflow ducting for improved cooling efficiency. In addition, the regenerative braking system typically used for enhanced efficiency has been recalibrated with IONIQ 5 N to enhance braking performance. It serves as the primary source of braking force, while the mechanical brakes are used to supplement additional braking force when required, ensuring enhanced endurance on the track and exceptional power regeneration.

To address the harsh braking demands of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, Hyundai designed N Brake Regen, an N-specific regenerative braking system developed specifically for IONIQ 5 N. It offers up to a maximum of 0.6 g of deceleration force through N Brake Regen alone and remains engaged under ABS activation scenarios with a maximum of 0.2 g. The risk of brake fade due to vehicle weight is minimized by maximizing the regenerative braking power strategy, resulting in lower brake force and wear applied to the friction-based mechanical brakes. The seamless blending between the N Brake Regen and hydraulic brakes creates a smooth transition, imperceptible to the driver. Moreover, performance-oriented left-foot braking allows the brake and accelerator pedal to be applied simultaneously on the track.

State-of-the-art technology delivers shift feeling and engaging fun in an Everyday Sportscar

Fulfilling the N brand pillar of Everyday Sportscar, IONIQ 5 N delivers an engaging shift feeling and engaged driving through the integrated N e-shift and N Active Sound+. N e-shift provides a sense of control over power delivery and shift feeling. N Active Sound + works collectively to deliver a futuristic electrified sound with ICE-like engine and exhaust sounds for a more engaging experience behind the wheel. Together, they enhance the joy of driving by simulating the power-shift feel, rev-matching downshifts and powertrain notes of an ICE vehicle.

Performance enthusiasts have lamented a lack of feedback behind the wheel of many EVs on the market due to the fundamental nature of electric motor tuning. Hyundai N engineers developed the N e-shift and N Active Sound+ functions to deliver greater driver feedback and more precise driver control of IONIQ 5 N dynamic driving conditions. The unique emphasis on precise power modulation differentiates the N approach to EV sound engagement from other vehicles.

N e-shift simulates the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) of internal combustion engine (ICE) N cars. It simulates a gearshift by controlling motor torque output and simulates the power-shift feeling between shifts, including synchronized audible cues. As a result, it provides a more precise, interactive driving experience that feels closer to an ICE experience than other EVs.

N Active Sound+ is paired with N e-shift to enhance the driving experience by creating a more engaging and exciting sensory experience for the driver. It incorporates a 10-speaker system (eight internal, two external) that offers three distinct sound themes. The 'Ignition' theme simulates the sound of an internal-combustion 4-cylinder engine, and 'Evolution' provides a signature high-performance sound inspired by the RN22e rolling lab prototype, featuring variable volume during cornering with a sense of synchronization with lateral g-forces. The 'Supersonic' theme is a unique concept inspired by twin-engine fighter jets. The objective of N Active Sound+ is to provide drivers with an acoustic reference point to gauge the power utilized and available, especially when quickly gauging cornering speeds lapping a circuit. The driver gains an additional reference point to rapidly changing speeds in an intuitive manner, adding the sensory input of hearing to sight and tactile feel. This capability was developed out of thousands of kilometers of vehicle development and testing at the Nürburgring.

Like the standard IONIQ 5, its N variant is equipped with an external Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability when equipped with the V2L accessory adapter. V2L allows the driver to use the stored energy from the high-voltage battery to recharge devices, such as an e-bike, electrical camping equipment or domestic appliances - even when the vehicle is off.

Performance-enhancing design elements to inspire passionate driving

IONIQ 5 N's exterior adds many performance-enhancing design elements, such as contrasting black trim and a wing-type rear spoiler, which both emphasize the sporty aspects of the standard model and maximize its circuit driving potential via aerodynamic tuning. The N model further distinguishes itself from the standard IONIQ 5 with a change of proportions. It is 0.79 in. lower overall, 2.0 in. wider at the bottom to accommodate wider wheels and tires, and 3.2 in. longer due to a more prominent diffuser at the rear.

At the front, there is an N Mask graphic fascia with functional mesh along with an air curtain and active air flaps for extra cooling. A lip spoiler runs across the lower part of the bumper to emphasize the car's low-slung stance and convey its serious performance intent. The electrified N-exclusive 'Luminous Orange' at the bottom of the black front bumper cover continues along the side skirts, giving the IONIQ 5 N a race-ready look. This impression is further reinforced by forged 21-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in summer high performance 275/35R21 Pirelli P Zero tires for improved ride, handling, and outright roadholding for track performance.

At the rear, the prominent, N-exclusive wing-type spoiler, along with orange-accented rear diffuser and air outlet, helps control airflow for optimal aerodynamic performance, further highlighting IONIQ 5 N high-performance capability and adding to its aggressive styling. Integrated with the spoiler is a triangular N-exclusive CHMSL brake light. Below the rear hatch is an N-exclusive black bumper cover with checkered-flag-reflecting graphics. There is also a rear window washer and wiper for enhanced rearward visibility in adverse conditions.

The IONIQ 5 N interior neatly conveys the N family look with the application of N-branded elements, including steering wheel, seats, door scuff panels and metal pedals, all optimized for track driving. The newly designed N steering wheel prominently features the N logo for the first time, flanked by N buttons that set the desired drive mode, arranged to suit driver preference. Driving modes can be customized and matched to each button in various combinations to maximize the IONIQ 5 N driving spirit. The N Grin Boost button positioned at the three o'clock position allows instant and intuitive access to maximum acceleration and driving engagement in ten-second bursts. Paddles are optimally positioned at the driver's fingertips to engage N e-shift and N Pedal features.

The IONIQ 5 N center console is optimized for track driving with knee pads and shin support during cornering as well as a sliding armrest. An extension to the lower part of the console enhances rigidity to further support sporty driving. For everyday use, it also offers USB-C connectivity, a wireless charger and cupholders. The N seats have reinforced bolsters, so that even if strong lateral acceleration occurs during sharp cornering, it firmly supports the upper and lower body to help maintain a stable driving position. The N bucket seats are positioned about 0.79 in. lower compared to the standard IONIQ 5 for enhanced weight balance. N emblems are arranged on the front and rear of the seat with welcome lighting at the front. The two-toned design theme of the bucket seats carries over to the rear.

Due to the nature of N driving, IONIQ 5 N's pedals have been redesigned for foot contact in track driving scenarios that involve oversteer, drifting and power slides, reducing the risk of foot slippage in two-pedal driving. The footrest is optimized to help maintain a stable driving posture even under heavy deceleration. The new checkered-flag theme - a track-inspired take on the IONIQ 5 iconic parametric pixels - can be found on the door scuff plates, metal pedals and footrest conveying motorsport competition.

Much like the standard IONIQ 5, sustainable materials are applied throughout IONIQ 5 N, including recyclable door decorative garnish, BIO PET yarn from sugarcane, recycled PET yarn from recycled PET bottles, BIO TPO from sugarcane and eco-processed leather. IONIQ 5 N also adds recycled tire pigment paint and recycled poly Alcantara seat cover cloth.

EV implementation. It’s OK. But certain design elements/user interface things feel redundant after having the Tesla.

also FWD. too much torque for FWD. my rental is a SEL trim. I haven’t looked to see what, if any, kind of lsd is might have but fwd plus what I’m guessing are shitty stock tires have made this car feel unsafe at times.
