Tom Purves, BMW North America president and CEO, says the German luxury carmaker is planning to bring a version of its 1-Series to the United States. However, it won't reach the U.S. market for another three years, which is when BMW has scheduled a re-do of the vehicle. The problem with bringing the current version to the U.S. sooner is that BMW isn't convinced that Americans really like hatchbacks. Thus the company has decided to wait until other versions of the 1-Series are available for export to the U.S. Purves also said in the interview that BMW is still hurting from the fluctuations in the exchange rate. "The problem with hedging strategies is that you don't get the full benefit when things turn around (in your favor)," he said. "There is a time lag," he added.-Joe Szczesny

Here’s a few more pictures of BMW’s R32 fighter - the 135ti. Using the same 306 bhp 3L twin turbo unit as the 335i, it look like it’s going to be alot of fun.

Not that I'd buy it but ... that's a lot of power.
PS What's up with the 'rear doors' in the pic?

But yea, £26k for 130i M is a lot of money.

Everything in Europe is one size smaller than US - the 3 series is a standard size car - the 5 series is a full size car. A class, 1 series, A1/2 are all in the compact premium class - quite popular.
AMG has added its tricks to the A class - makes as much sense as this 135ti.

I so want a 1 series with a 4 banger in it...

I remember going through this whole bmw 1 wagon vs mazda 3/mps wagon before, but the 1 front still looks pretty weird to me. Its not ugly, it looks strange. The black one looks better but it clearly has some sort of non factory front end on it.

I like the Mazda 3 too, but for alot of people, it's not just about the BMW badge, it's about the RWD platform.

I have been going back and forth about replacing my Mazda3 with something else but after all the things I've been able to do with it (dogs, guitars, and so on) I'm not sure I can do a swap.
Hatchbacks are really popular in Europe for that very reason.
Americans are very different.

my g/f grew up with 2 siblings and their family never owned anything more than a sedan. so 2 adults and 3 kids, and they did many road trips including hauling a canoe across multiple states.
i'm still not seeing the point.
they make roof mounted and trunk mounted bike racks for sedans and coupes, wats the difference? and to my knowledge, most newer bikes the wheels come off very easily leaving a fairly light frame, why cant that fit in the back of a car?
< not seeing the point and i assume at this rate, i never will. you can only imagine my thoughts on my minivans/suvs. and if i want to move, ill pay uhaul $20 for a huge truck for the day. =]

You guys are missing the point.
This is a car that cant weigh any more than 2800lbs soaking wet that'll be capable of 350-400 RWHP with basic bolt-on mods. Were talking supercar power to weight ratio here and performance #'s here.
Could be one of the best performance values for the buck anywhere.

If you don't get the appeal of a hatch, you don't get it.
