Hey I take that back, very childish for me to start a Monday. My original point was the A4 is a great car, but to me it needs some more power to be at that price point.

And the reply is, it has about as much power/performance as other cars in this class, except with a 2.0T instead of a V6.

Seriously.
I mean I was pretty dubious regarding the small engine displacement prior to actual test drive.
And, yes, I know the pricing can be very high if it is FULLY loaded. When I was shopping for my gf's A4 Avant, I recognized so many useless options on Prestige trim. Those options that you can perfectly live without.
You can easily get a decent amount of options with 6MT A4 for less than $40k.
Come on, it has 211hp and 258tq with AWD, and it pulls 0.92g on the skidpad. And it runs 0-60 in low 6 sec and 1/4 miles in high 14 sec with low 90 mph. The engine is totally underrated. And did I mention it looks pretty damn sexy?
Yes, I'm pretty biased, but it really is a pretty good package overall.

^^ Nice move....that will help the MPG.
Props to Audi for so many transmission choices....but please, kill the CVT option.
I heard that Honda will have an 8 speed transmission too
in 2020.

I miss my 03 CL-S :(
I dunno I got 38mpg on a highway trip on my 2010 2.0T a few weeks back. I get 30-32mpg on mixed driving regularly... An 8 speed will probably make it break 40mph on highway drives.

By the way with the 8 sp I imagine paddle-shifting could get annoying... With 6 sp it's fun.

My gf's avant got 36mph cruising at around 65mph once... but she gets like around 24mph for 100% city driving... I think that's pretty good.

anyways... i don't believe those MPG meters when used for short mileage or reading off while driving..
maybe it's my TL.. but after resetting mpg meter, i was cruising I-5 at 95mph and for 5 miles, it gave me 33mpg... then i slowed down to 75 for next 5 miles, my mpg (overall 10 miles) was 30mpg
i have my guesses why this is happening, but i'm no car geek... so yea

I have yet to take the Avant on a long distance trip other than a trip to vegas to see what my mileage would be like on just highway driving. All my other driving in stop-and-go freeway and city driving puts me at around 21-24 mpg. Boost is too hard to stay out of.

Quick Correction
The A4(q5, a5 etc) is getting the 8 speed for model year 2011 which will be on lots in the next month!
According to the audi model change guide it's good for a reduction in 0-60 by .1 and an increase by 1 MPG.
From looking at the gear rations(the zf 8hp 45 is also used in the new 2011 535) it will probably be a greater improvement then that.
I'm still debating on my next car at the end of the year. The a4 quattro would be a more sensible choice but I'm loving the s4
As a quick aside there is a guy with a 6 speed auto 2.0t avant with apr stage one that hit 14.1 at the strip. Not bad for a software only 3900lb car!

Audi not planning next-gen RS4
http://www.leftlanenews.com/audi-not...t-gen-rs4.html
Even though I can't afford one, and their sales are low, it will be sad when both the RS4 and M3 Sedan won't be offered.
Those in the market for a compact, fast and German-made sedan have typically had three options – the BMW M3, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and the Audi RS4. However, future buyers will likely have to scratch the latter off their shopping list.
According to a report from Car and Driver, Audi has no plans to produce a successor to the RS4 sedan. Although the idea of a practical supercar seems quite appealing, Audi executives feel the RS5 sufficiently covers the market.
Interestingly, BMW will likely follow a similar path with the next-generation M3. The sedan version of the current M3 continues to be a slow seller, which will likely kill the four-door variant for the next go-round.
Fans of fast Audi sedans will have at least one option though as the RS6 is expected to make a return appearance.

Fahrvergnügen'd
Audi has already said the next A4 is going to be a smaller, lighter version of the current car so in some ways it makes sense to wait.
With a smaller car, they can probably do something with the 3.0T and make a crazy RS4 that isn't a huge V8 ... Might be cheaper to build that way.

I believe that partly to be true. High end sporty sedans just don't sell well in the states, even when the economy was good. High end sporty wagons sell even worse. They sell well overseas simply because people don't write off a car as not being sporty just because it has more than 2 doors. At least that's my take on it.

It doesn't look like Audi themselves confirmed that the 2G RS4 is a no go so I wouldn't believe anything just yet. Indeed, all the author said when he claimed that was "I hear . . . ." so that means nothing. I hear the economy is back too . . . .

New Audi RS4 Avant in 2012
Autocar
Audi’s wave of high performance new saloons and estates shows no sign of slowing with scoops of the new RS4 leaking out while testing at the Nurburgring.
Given away by the outrageous extended wheelarches, this RS4 Avant is understood to use the same running gear as the RS5 coupe.
That means a 444bhp 4.2-litre V8 pushing out 317lbft of torque and mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch S-Tronic transmission.
The RS4 is tipped to appear only in a five-door estate bodyshell, with the RS5 to continue as the hot, two-door coupe and the forthcoming 440bhp S6 to cover the market niche for a hot four-door saloon.
With the RS4 and S6 in the development pipeline for launch next year in the UK, Audi is covering all corners of the market with a hot S7 version of its executive-sized five-door fastback and an S8 version of its A8 luxury saloon. The S6 is tipped for spring sale in 2012 followed by the RS4 in the summer.
However, the S6, S7 and S8 trio will feature more restrained styling than the RS4 and be tuned to offer a more refined and relaxed high performance driving experience. The S6 will be available in both saloon and Avant form, the latter expected to take around 60 per cent of sales.
Power for the S-models will come from a new 4.0-litre V8 boosted by a single-turbo. A higher output 555bhp twin-turbo version of this new engine will appear first in an entry-point Bentley Continental GT later this year.
When and if Audi decides to launch an RS6 version of the A6, this powerful lump can expect to offer Audi an M5-rivalling super-saloon.
In a bid to match the launch impact of the M5 at this September’s Frankfurt Show, Audi has been planning to launch the S6, S7 and S8 at the same show, although whether the RS4 will appear, too, is unclear.
