Return of the RS4: Audi planning to bring top-dog A4 back to States

One car that Audi-philes will beg, borrow and literally steal for is the RS4.

Discontinued in August 2001 after a too-brief one-year run that saw just 6030 cars produced, the RS4 was the top of the A4 line with its 380-hp bi-turbocharged version of the 2.7-liter V6 engine. As we reported late last year, Audi has plans to bring an RS4 sedan to the United States by 2004.
Here’s the car, most likely powered by a bi-turbo version of the all-aluminum 3.0-liter V6, running test laps at Nürburgring.

Note the lower front air dam, which appears to be a near-direct lift from the big brother RS6, along with the nine-spoke wheels and performance tires.

This will deff be my next car. I love the new s4 but this thing will totally EAT it up w/ the 3.0 bi turbo. and endless hp w/ the upgraded turbos :D

Though Audi does already have the S4, the most powerful A4 variants will be the RS4 variants the German manufacturer is currently testing at the German Nürburgring race circuit. The car will be equipped with the bigger RS6's 450-HP 4.2-litre V8 biturbo which can be expected to catapult the car to 100 km/h in less than 4.5 seconds! Mind you: a Ferrari 360 Modena needs about the same time... @Automedia

I WANT ONE NOW !$@#^%@!#$^@!#^&

gavriil 08-20-2003 08:35 AM

1. I never believed reports that the RS4 will get a 3 liter biturbo engine. I always thought the RS6's engine will be the chosen one.

2. Look closely in this video. It looks that it's running behind the C55 test car. I mean, are these companies in agreement to put all their direct competitors in the N-ring at the same time to see how they do against each other?

chef chris 08-20-2003 08:38 AM

That S4 is hot damn it...

I'd love to have one of those...

That's not an S4. It's an RS4.

chef chris 08-20-2003 08:42 AM

Even better...

Nashua_Night_Hawk 08-20-2003 10:45 AM

Ah lovely RS4!

Zapata 08-20-2003 10:48 AM

With the engine of the rs6 and the same platform.....the new RS4 will also inherent the F/R 60/40 weight distrubution..... ugh....

neoprufrok 08-20-2003 10:49 AM

I used to own an S4. I think I need to win the lottery to own an RS4.

mantis23 08-20-2003 11:56 AM

how much are we talkin here,$75-$80K?

charliemike 08-20-2003 12:21 PM

Jeezus

Must be nice to be rich :)

We get to drive some nice cars, but the true beasts are way out of my league.

gavriil 08-20-2003 05:49 PM

I think the RS4 will be around high $60Ks and go well into the $70Ks.

ApocalypseCL 08-20-2003 07:47 PM

gosh that car is soooooo sexy! i wanna make love to it right now!:wackit:

That high?

The RS6 is $80k ... I guess that makes sense, but for $10k more I'd probably get the RS6.

ApocalypseCL 08-20-2003 07:48 PM

whats the specs on the RS4

Red Nj-s 08-20-2003 08:53 PM

Wow that is amazing.

Honestly i can't justify buying this car, its going to be pretty damn expensive, and it won't be that much better then the S4 and won't be as good as the RS6. I think its a pretty stupid niche in the market they are working towards. Granted I would love to have this car and am not bashing it, just don't see a point in it. I mean when you think of luxury sports cars, you don't think audi and if you can buy this car which will be like 70's, or high 60's then you might as well spend a little extra and get something better, this idea is just as bad as mcdonalds selling taco's, come on audi!

neoprufrok 08-22-2003 12:25 PM

Ummm. The RS4 has had a tradition of being one of the best 4 door sedan/wagon performance cars in the world. It acts as a benchmark for their engineering and manufacturing prowess.

Won't be that much better than an s4? 0-60 4.5 vs 0-60 5.9. I think that's A LOT better. Translate that to quarter mile times and you're looking at 1 to 2 seconds shaved off the clock.

Won't be better than an rs6? This one will have a manual transmission and is a smaller, more compact chassis, meaning a lot more fun around the curves.

If you look at the Champion Audi cars that have been winning a lot of races and titles recently (I forget which circuit) they are basically RS4's.

NOVAwhiteTypeS 08-22-2003 02:33 PM

the RS6 engine will NOT fit in the current s4 body. they barely fit the v8. and there is NO space. the RS4 will be a 3.x lt bi-turbo.

and wasn't it confirmed this is just a a4 w/ the tech body kit like 2 months ago? it has the same rims and color

amir was here 08-26-2003 05:55 PM

gav, that is not an RS4

that is an A4, 3.0

the S4/RS4 line has brushed aluminum mirrors, the RS4 will have a front more similar to the S4...

that car is the A4 with Ultra Sport Package..which is RS4 rims, and votex bodykit...trust me, that is NOT an RS4.

Even in the video, you can tell when it shows the cars rear...on one side you can see it says A4 and the other side it says 3.0

if it was an RS4, it would just say RS4....just like the S4

btw, on audiworld its confirmed that the pic is of a A4 3.0, and 90% of people there believe the next rs4 will be turbo 6 3.0tt possibly..

the current V8 in the S4 BARELY fits

zeroday 08-26-2003 06:13 PM

Amir...get that kit!...and those wheels!!..that thing looks badass even if it's not an rs4.

Audi: A4, S4 news **A4 Outsells BMW 3-Series in Germany (page 19)**

Sharper New A4's Ahead By A Nose

By Chris Thorp

Exclusive images in the current issue of Auto Express magazine reveal the sensational new look of Audi's facelifted saloon, which will take on the BMW 3-Series with a range of hi-tech engines and sharper styling. After a series of extravagant design studies and concept cars, the German firm is now concentrating its efforts on its mainstream machines - and is bringing the A4 up to date.

But that's not all; the design team is also adding the final touches to the next A6, while engineers are busy developing a raft of new Turbocharged Stratified Injection (TSI) petrol engines that will appear across the range next year.

Taking its styling inspiration from the firm's three most recent show cars - the Pikes Peak, Nuvolari and Le Mans quattro - the A4 features a prominent chrome-rimmed grille and a more aggressive nose, similar to the A6.

The car seen in the current issue of Auto Express magazine will be available in four-door saloon, five-door Avant and two-door cabrio bodystyles from launch. That's not expected to be until 2005, because the current A4 only went on sale in 2001 and is still relatively fresh.

As part of the Volkswagen Group, Audi will benefit from the multi-million-pound engine development which resulted first in the economical FSI direct-injection petrol engines. Now there's TSI - which has added a turbocharger - and the extra power is rumoured to come in as low as 2,000rpm, giving even entry-level units impressive performance throughout the rev range.

The MkV VW Golf GTI's 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI will appear first - it's set to be introduced in the current-generation A4 in the spring, offering a power output of 200bhp. A 240bhp edition will be added later, with a 250bhp 3.0-litre V6 FSI and a 225bhp 3.0-litre V6 TDI joining the range in 2005. A number of gearboxes will be available, but top of the technological list will be the Multitronic CVT automatic and the sporty DSG already used in the flagship TT.

There's still life in the current A4 line-up, though, with an S4 version of the present convertible due in February. Set to rival BMW's mighty M3 cabrio, the hot Audi drop-top will cost around £40,000. It will offer a sub-six-second time for the 0-60mph sprint, with a maximum speed electronically limited to 155mph. Power will be taken from the same 344bhp 4.2-litre V8 petrol engine as used by the S4 saloon.

Meanwhile, the new A6 is expected to go on sale in the UK in the spring in saloon form, with an Avant estate version arriving later in the year.

Got pics and specs (specs are for cars sold in Europe):

New quattro GmbH styling enhancements now incorporated within existing Sport package optional for all A4 saloon and Avant models
Updated Sport package available from this month for saloon models and from August 1st for the Avant at an extra cost of £1,400
Revised version of 1.8 T four-cylinder petrol engine with 190PS replaces 163PS version from this month
Tax-beating EU4 compliance for 163PS and 180PS versions of 2.5 TDI engine
Sport versions of the acclaimed Audi A4 now cut more of a dash, thanks to a new styling package developed by quattro GmbH, the Audi division responsible for the potent RS 4 and RS 6 models. The upgraded styling treatment becomes an integral part of the existing Sport package, which can be ordered from this month for saloon models, and from August 1st for the Avants, at an extra cost of £1,400.

The new look comes courtesy of body coloured front and rear bumpers, an extended front valance with enlarged air intakes and integrated fog lights, side sill extensions, a restyled rear bumper and a subtle rear spoiler. In addition to this new equipment, the Sport package features 17-inch ‘Five Spoke Star’ alloy wheels, sports suspension, sports front seats with electric lumbar adjustment, a sports leather steering wheel and leather trimming for the gear knob and gaiter. It also adds rear electric windows and aluminium window trim strips for six-cylinder models.

The revised A4 Sport models can realise the potential suggested by their new look, thanks to a wide choice of powerful and sophisticated four and six-cylinder petrol and TDI engines. Highlights of the petrol range include a responsive 3.0-litre alloy block V6 with 220PS, an advanced direct injection 2.0-litre FSI four-cylinder delivering 150PS with outstanding economy and emission control, and a recently updated, 190PS version of the popular turbo charged four-cylinder 1.8 T engine.

Available combined with either front wheel-drive or quattro permanent four-wheel-drive, and linked to a six-speed manual gearbox, the new addition enables the A4 1.8 T Sport to accelerate to 62mph in 8.2 seconds and to reach a maximum speed, where permitted, of 147mph. It does so without ruling out impressive fuel economy of up to 32.8mpg (combined cycle), and uniquely in the sector the automatic version, powered by the peerless Audi multitronic continuously variable transmission (CVT), actually increases this figure to 34.0mpg, while maintaining performance at virtually the same level.

An even finer balance between punchy performance and real world running costs can be found in the A4 2.0 FSI Sport. Its direct injection, 150PS petrol engine is good for a 0-62mph time of 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 136mph where conditions allow, and at the same time it can cover up to an impressive 39.6mpg (combined cycle). Compared with key prestige rivals, it is the cheapest to run, thanks to a significant advantage in fuel economy, a competitive OTR price of £21,480 and a low CO2 output of just 170g/km which minimises benefit-in-kind taxation. Positioned in the 18 per cent bracket, the A4 FSI carries up to £1,076 less liability than its key rivals for the 2003/4 tax year.

EU4 for TDI

As an added benefit, the highly rated Audi 2.5-litre V6 TDI units with 163PS and 180PS, which power the revised A4 2.5 TDI Sport and 2.5 TDI quattro Sport models, have now been re-engineered for full compliance with the EU4 emissions regulations due to come into force in 2005. The A4 range is the first premium compact executive line-up to offer EU4 diesel models which reduce running costs for business users by eliminating the 3 per cent taxation premium currently levied on diesel. This equates to a reduction in taxation charges of up to £786 in tax year 2003/4.

On the road prices for the A4 saloon range from £18,145 for the A4 1.6 to £25,655 for the A4 3.0 quattro. Avant models start with the 1.6 at £19,295, and finish with the 3.0 quattro at £26,805.

anyone wanna do me a favor and dig up a picture of the new S4 and post a side-by-side image with this new facelifted A4? 'cause aside from the side mirrors being painted, minus the tacky trim below all four doors, and the rounded edges on the front bumper, this new A4 looks much better than its muscular and pricier bigger twin. just makes me wonder what exterior changes their gonna make on the '05 S4...
