Here is a custom fiberglass box that I am putting in the left side of the trunk. I currently have a mold that I just removed from the trunk tonight. Still have a couple of layers of fiberglass mat to do yet. A little time-consuming but I think it will turn out well and be better than building a big wooden box.

The sub I am looking at getting is the Image Dynamics IDQ12 which is a good sound-quality sub. Another sub I am looking at is the Adire Audio Brahma which is a beast of a sub which has good sound-quality at really high levels.
Good luck.

Yes you could use a good free air, aka infinite baffle, sub in your car.
To really get good bass, you would need to seal your trunk from the interior of the car. To do this, you would need to put a sheet of mdf across the back seats and seal the holes of the rear deck. The idea is to block the sound waves from the back and front of the subs. The waves from each side of the sub are 180 degrees out of phase and if they meet they will go to 0 which produces no sound (180-180=0). Same principle used in noise-canceling headphones.
If you just put in a free air 8 in place of the stock sub, it probably wouldn't be worth it to seal your trunk. Larger subs or multiples probably would be worth it.

g'd up:
Depending on the work you want to do and the size of the subs...they can go in a few places...something as small as an 8" can go under seats...in a remade console...or installed under your rear seats...or in your rear deck along with an enclosure. A 10" could also go in your rear deck, but probably in your trunk...a 12" almost definitely in the trunk. I run JL 12w7's...the monster of all subs
