What is 4th wire in RGB signal?

What does the 4th wire in the RGB signal our navi screen understands do? There is the red, green, blue and then a 'sync' or 'composite' wire... what the heck does it do?

Anyone know?

Sync's the screen and the video source together so the picture stays still and centered
