Vented and Sealed Boxes
Vented and Sealed Boxes
Hey i've got 2 12" Kicker S12L7's and a amp that runs it's rms power. Right now i've got a sealed box and it knocks like crazy inside the cabin but when you open up the trunk it sounds like shit. Would this problem be solved if i got a vented box?
it sounds alright in the cabin when the trunk is open, it sounds horrible when ur standing right by the trunk when the trunk is open. It sounds bad because it doesnt give you the low bass that you want. That BOOOOOOOOM sound lol. Instead it sounds like a speaker kinda.
I'm not sure what to say--for me, I'm most concerned about getting the subwoofer to blend correctly with the rest of the system (from inside the car). If it sounds good from the driver's seat, I'm not sure I'd do anything to it. They say sealed boxes are generally better for sound quality, but ported boxes produce more sound with the same amount of power.

You guys need a hobby. Maybe volunteering? I recommend Habitat for Humanity - they can use some strapping young men to help out.
This reminds me of the guys years back who wanted their bass to "carry" outside the car. Turned out some of them were dealers wanting the ice-cream-truck effect.
The woofer sounds like a speaker - that's what it does. It is designed to compress the air inside your car. Compressing the atmospherre of an entire planet - that's a different task...

This thread is funny.
I was thinking the same thing elduderino was with the amp settings.
Check all the settings on the amp to see if it's set to that of a full range speaker box and not a sub. Low Pass is the answer my friend.

I have a fairly balanced system, and the bass is much different inside the car as opposed to outside with the trunk open. Before you rush off and build a new box, I'd experiment with different levels on the sub when standing outside; having all the doors open, etc. I'm having a hard time believing that ported vs. sealed is going to make it sound tremendously different when standing next to the sub but far away from the mains.
Remember, there's a reason foghorns use low frequencies--they carry better through the air over distance. To make your system sound good at a distance would likely require you to increase the mids/treble by opening the doors/windows or changing the eq or gains.
