Upgrading the alternator...

I just got my new 180amp alternator and new 4 gauge alt. cable. I was looking at how the cable runs from the alternator and saw that it goes to the fuse box and is fused at 120amps. Can this fuse be upgraded or should I just run the cable directly to the battery? I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that incase the voltage regulator went in the alternator and blows up the battery.

Thanks

Mike

that fuse is for the max load of the car but does the same thing that the underhood audio fuse does. no one ever messes with that fuse for obvious reasons. that is the reason there are so many under hood watertight fuse holders you can buy specifically for an audio system. just buy one of these and run the wire directly to the battery.

Thanks Systek I am going to do that. I'll just leave the other wiring tucked away so I can reuse it one I get rid of the car or alternator. Should I go with a 200 amp fuse if the Alternator is 180 amps? The acura fusible link is 120 amp and the alternator is 105 amp rated so I think 200 should be good .
Thanks

the amp rating should not exceed the rating of the wire you are trying to protect. also, the amplifiers or other electronics being supplied by that power cable should not exceed that max amp rating either.
