Upgrade from this... to what????

Well i want to upgrade. I have a JBL BP1200.1 running a JBL W10GTI. I was thinking about trying a MTX 9500 10. I want to stick to a single 10 inch set up. The way mine sits now bangs better then many pairs of lesser quality 12's and 10's.

I like the boom when im in the mood, but most of the time, Im listening to some major kick drum, like Pantera, Hellyeah, or some Stevie Ray Vaughn, Elton John stuff. So I'd like a good well rounded sub.

I know I can find some very musicaly high quality subs out there, but they won't have the SPL I like.

I've been out of the car audio biss for about 6 years now. Is there any new lesser known subs out there that will do the trick?

FYI: I've got 1200 watts @ 2 ohms, and stable to 1 ohm. Would prefer to go 2 ohm or less as to get the most out of the amp.

A personal favorite would be a Revolution Designs Alpha. The newest, the V3, is more of an SQ sub than the previous V2 which was more of an SPL sub. When they launched the new lines, however, the Alpha became more of an SQL sub (if there is such a thing) since they came out with much better SPL subs. I'd start there. I ran a V2, and it was a very solid sub, both for SPL and SQ. From what I hear the new ones have more SQ, but also get loud as balls when you want to. And that power sounds right about perfect for them. Stick with a dual 4 ohm coil'ed sub, and you should be money.

Another sub to look at would be the Image Dynamics IDmax. Although I don't have personal experience with them, I've been told by someone who's used an Alpha V3 that they are a very solid choice.

Outside of that, I don't see much surpassing that GTi. They're absolutely some of the best subs out there. I almost had a single 15 to run IB, but it just wasn't in the cards at the time, especially since a 2nd would've cost me twice what the first one did.

Thanks for the sugestions, I'll check them out. I see that DD has some new stuff. Looks intresting.

I knew upgrading from the GTI was going to be tuff, and cost a lot too. Who knows, maybe I'll build another box and go single 12. Choices...hmm

DD's aren't exactly known for their SQ... They're some of the loudest subs on the planet (proven time and again in the competition lanes of dbdrag, meca, bassrace, USACi, etc) but IMO they have horrible SQ. Them and AQ both. I've only heard 1 DD/AQ setup that I actually enjoyed listening to, and that was a full wall with 4 15s in it, powered by 4 AQ 3500s. It had amazing SQ on ~300w to the front stage. The guy could turn the subs down on his Pioneer 880-PRS and set the soundstage right up on the dash. Other than that, they're just loud, and don't get low from my experience...

I think DD sq is underrated. It all depends on the setup. I loved my 9515, and even my RE HC had a hard time keeping up w/ the 9515 sq.

I have been out of the audio biz for a while too, but as far as SQL subs, usually only a few come to mind... most noteably, the JL W7, but for the budget minded, more the IQMAX or Fi Q.

If you're willing to go 12", Maybe RE XXX would do the trick. the Stereo Integrity Mag also used to be a great SQL driver, I've heard the v4 has gone more the SQ route but probably handle the power you're looking for, and get some pretty good output. but I think all these are only available in 12".

maybe looks for some old tc sound subs, tc oem, soundsplinter, but they might not have the warranty/service, since they aren't really around anymore :*(

Good call. I completely forgot about TC/Audiopulse. Those are some sick drivers. I was looking at running like 4 8s for awhile, but couldn't get everything worked out how I wanted to, so I went with the 2 10s. The Revo's or Axis' should suit your application well, OP...

I know you said you preferred a 10. However if you will consider a 12, then you should check out the Shiva-X. It is one of the best SQ subs on the market, and can get pretty loud. Here's a link: http://www.diycable.com/main/product...roducts_id=653
