Not really impressive...and prohibitively expensive...they're charging 3x what they should just for screens. It's just as easy and more flexible to do home grown PC's such as the one I have.

You don't have to buy their screens. I don't know what's not to impress about it. I have yet to see a computer that small with the outputs necessary to plug into the screen, plug-and-play for some of us common folk.
acur8ly:
Quite a few places...for $250. Usually I can find them for $300.

I can make you a SBC cheaper (abotu $350-400) that's about the size of a hard drive (or if you can't picture that, about the size of a small paperback book) that can run win2k, play DVD, connect to the internet and run a LAN, do GPS, blah blah blah...and also play music videos, Divx, do dolby 5.1, etc. I just chose my system (6"x8"x3") because I wanted an extremely inexpensive computer that gave me a LOT of capability.

. I didn't mean to get a customer heh. I'll sell them as soon as I debut at IASCA and in some magazines.
And I wish you hadn't asked that...because that's one of the little things I figured out to do but I'll tell you. When you turn your key off and it shuts off the in car electronics, that sends a signal to my PC telling it to hibernate
. It can go from full speed to hibernation in about 6 seconds...and a stock battery can more than supply that much power for it to do so. When the car turns back on (depending on if it's set to turn on with the car, or with pressing a switch), it pulls out of hibernation in 3-4 seconds.

When are you thinking of doing this? I would like to see the outcome. Are you going to change the stock head unit?

You've really got me thinking now...

It's already done...the computer is built and working with all the stuff I mentioned and a lot of things I don't want to mention yet. I just don't want to post pics till it's all done. And yeah, going to get a small, silver cd/cdr/cdrw/mp3/sirius player that I can use when I bypass the computer altogether.
pangpang77:
It does...it has composite, svideo, and dvi outputs. The WLAN works like any computer...with a Breezecom setup that goes 30 miles (the most expensive thing in my car to date).

In case anyone's wondering
the exact computer they are selling with those screens can be had at a lot of places for under $500. For example, check out www.casedepot.com . Follow the link for "standard cases", then the link for "Slim" and it's the 3rd one in the top row... Can't do a direct link because it's a frames site, but anyway... They're not the only place that sells that exact machine... Just add a processor and ram and you're good to go...
[edit: and here is a mini-tv screen that has an S-video input connector on it, for $150USD. If you put a video card in the above computer that gives you the ability to output S-video, you're all set...
