Post TL Stereo

Hey there fellow TL lovers, I have a question about this car's sound system. For those who know, please tell me it's actual wattage (I know about the separate 100 watt amp for the subwoofer, but not about the entire system's wattage, and a dealer actually couldn't answer that either!). I'd also like to hear from anybody who owns a TL with this system in it how you like it, indicating sound quality, distortion (if any) when cranked, good and bad aspects of it, and if anybody's modified the stereo because the factory system falls short somehow (which I hope isn't the case).

Thanks for any info on this.

Chris

Not sure about the TL, but the CL stereo wasn't too bad, but it needed a little more kick, so I added 2 6 1/2" Bazooka tubes in the trunk to help out. Not sure if I need to do this with the TL-S, but if I have to, I will......

BTW, to get more replies you may want to ask this question in the TL forum.....

50 for the front speakers!! That rots. Why don't car manufacturers go the distance with the stereo put into their cars? Always miffs me.

The stereo is only OK if you're used to high-dollar aftermarket systems. If the last stereo you heard came with the car (unless it was a new lexus with the Mark/levinson package at about four grand), you'll be in for a treat.

The bass really does reach down low and sound good, but it could use more power. the treble is lacking, which seems to be a characteristic of Bose systems.

As for wattage, after listening to my car I'm sure that the 100w rating for the sub is for peak power only, as opposed to RMS power which I estimate to only be around 30-40w. The other four speakers couldn't be running much more than 12w RMS each as far as I can tell...

Thanks, Gomez, that's valuable info. The current stereo I have in my car, which is a mint `94 Accord EX I'll be selling within the next few months to step up into the TL, is Sony 10 CD, tape, FM, etc., that is fantastic. If I have to, I'll modify the TL stereo a little as quality sound, while I'm driving, is so important to the driving thrill.

Thanks again for the info.

I really like the TL factory system. I've had high quality aftermarket systems in most of my cars and I find the overall performance of the TL to be outstanding. Just listen to it for a while and see what you really think. I've got a PPI top of the line amp, two Boston Acoustics RM9s and a pair of MBQuart separates sitting in boxes from when I pulled them out of my Legend Coupe before trading it in for the TL. I just don't see the point of putting all that into the TL....the TL sounds great.

Hey all,

First, the total wattage for the TL sound system is 180 watts. 100 watts for the "subwoofer". 80 watts for the 4 speakers. The headunit (20x4 watts) powers the 4 speakers. The separate amp (100 watts) powers the sub.

Thanks.

Excellent feedback on this important (to me) topic. It's the final straw for deciding on the TL, and I appreciate your words. What the hell you gonna do with that hi-fi stuff from your Legend? Seems like a waste.

Question

I'm not an expert on stereo systems. Can someone tell me does it worth to put a pair of tweeters on? I've heard of different materials such as aluminum, silk and Titanium. What brand / type / size of tweeters would you recommend? Thanks.

I think the stereo is pretty good. I had a pioneer before and it had much warmer sound. I find this lacking in the mids. You can tell this especially by the fact that the vocals often sound a little far back. I've also found a little distortion in my '05 TL. Can anybody comment on upgrading the amp?

Thanks.

Have you upgraded your speakers yet? I didn't read through the thread, but that would be the place to start... After that, then look into an external amp, or amp at the same time you get new speakers... Also, what kind of power are you looking for, and how much money are you willing to spend? These will be the biggest factors in what you should buy...
