system almost done
system almost done
OK my system is comin to an end soon. The whole install has been drawn out over a 3 month period. In the car I got a Alpine CDA7897 HU which plays mp3 to. Alpine Type R 6 3/4 components up front, Alpine type s 2 ways in the rear door plus clarion tweeters. The mids and highs are powered by a 4x60 acoustics amp. What i still need to get installed is One type R 12 inch woofer wit rockford fosgate 400s amp. I am probally gonna keep my trunk simple lookin for now. I wasted to much money on the headunit and the install for that. The headunit was 600 bucks and the install was 200. With wiring and install I have spent about lil over 3 grand. Any picture of trunks would be nice. I seen the ones done by ron but thats just to much. I want something simple wit the amps mounted to the side wit hte cap.
you might want something like mine. Unfortunately, I'm digicam oppressed and I don't have pics.. but to give you an idea.
I have a panel running all the way from the left taillight to the back seat. On that panel is the sub, the amp, and the cap. Its all flush and one pieced. As you would imagine, the sub would have to be by the tailight since thats where there's area to put in a sub box. I got a very low space requirement sub. an Alpine Type S. That way, the box could be as small as possible. The front of the box is part of the panel that I was talking about.
how far does it get from the side? Well, imagine if you put a big piece of MDF straight and parallel with the wheelwell all the way from the seatback to the edge by the taillight. I'll post pics later when I get my hands on a digicam.
In the end, its not a bad setup. Theres a LOT of trunk space kept. I still have my passthrough. the only issue I slightly see is the box/panel encroaches onto the spare tire well cover a little. I didn't notice when they first set it up. So now to get my spare, I have to move the structure. A little annoying but at least I still have my spare.
good luck.

I really wanna see your set up now. I am trying to keep much trunk space as I can and this is my solution, have my box and sub sitting on the passenger side in the trunk wit the mids and highs amp mounted on the back. I want to mount this amp on the back, so it will weigh down the sub box. The type R sub is really heavy anyways so I dont think it will move much. My Rockford bass amp will be on the driver side where the cubby hole is and the cap next to it. I might have to put a fan in becasue i know rockford amps heat up but the quilty trade off is nice. I know not everyone will agree to that.

So your sub is firing side ways in the trunk?? How does that sound
it actually sounds pretty darn nice. I had to get rid of some phase/bass lag issues at first tho. the problem was that the bass takes a little too long to travel all the way from the furthest point of the back. search for my post regarding 'bass lag' After that was dealt with, it works nicely. However, recently I think I still want to add another set of thin 8" subs up front just to make it tighter. Right now I'm relying on the omnidirectional nature of bass to compensate and 'sound' like it comes from the front. It works for the most part but I figure it'd be that much more tighter if I REALLY had bass drivers up front
where in fla are you, dnd2984? Maybe we can meet up and you can hear it for yourself.

alright dnd2984,
I got my grubby hands on a digicam as fast as I can and I even got some night shots.. maybe soon I'll get daylight shots.. so bear with me
simple .. effective .. better than I thought it would've came out .. plastic grid for my sub because all the sub grille's I've seen don't give much protecting from some flying piece of junk. This guy offered me two 'bars' from pioneer. .. called it a sub guard. please.. dont' make me laugh.

note all the junk in my trunk ..

if you see wood filings .. its because I just came from a weekend shopping trip which includes home depot run .. that trunk was packed to capacity with soil, the ski hole was used for those long pieces of wood for building wood fences, groceries, a cooler .. etc .. etc.. anyway .. point is .. my trunk is heavily used.

I like that. It looks nice and smiple. But that thing covering the sub has to go. I know what u mean by stuff hitting the sub, my first sub was a Infinty reference and there was a wrench in the trunk and hit and cracked the sub. Also then I got 2 10s Alpine type S and now wit One 12 alpine type R and got the kicker grill. Just go buy a kicker grill, it looks really nice on the alpine subs I think. Also I have the same cap as you and almost got the same amp.
I know what u mean by those home depot runs. thats why i am back down to one 12.

Dnice,
FYI , the alpine sub has done more than enough for what I needed
Granted, its no JL, but for what I paid, it pounds sufficient. I dislike boomy bass and this one has been decently tight. Most importantly, the space requirements for the enclosure for this sub was small enough for the job. Perhaps when I have some more flow to throw around, I'll try something higher ended.
dnd2984,
thanks, I figured it'd been close to what you wanted
the only 'slight' issue is .. it encroaches on the cover for the spare tire so you have to shift the whole thing over before u can get at the tire. as for the kicker grille.. do you mean this one?

that hole in the middle is just waiting for a 2x4 to slip into ^^;; I'm all for nicer looking protection .. but this was the closest and most practical thing to the balance I wanted. guarding but not hiding. furthermore.. it was free
yea, the kenwood amp packs a wallop for the money. clean too. eXcelon line has high signal to dB ratios. and I have a kenwood eXcelon HU that talks to it
that one avg. sized amp powers the 'entire' system. too bad the first one wouldn't turn off and I had to get it replaced. I used to have a rockford too (600a4) but it got too hot and the new designs are too weird looking for my taste
I considered the JL too but they wanted just a little too much than I was willing to part with.

I was gonna go for the Kicker L7 but I really do like alpine and the Type S gave me great bass and the new Type R will be better. When i was lookin at subs the kicker was my first choice but the Alpine will give better SQ. IN the RSX I put one kicker comp vr 10 and that bumps really nice.

Yep thats the grill I am talkin about. Yes rockford amp will heat up thats why I will get a fan installed to. I hope a 2x4 wont hit the sub then again i dont use my car for that anyways. Thats when I borrow my dad suburban. I will post pics next week when my system is done.

I don't know if the remark was referred to me or dnd2984 but in my case, even if the kicker was less expensive, it wouldn't have fit my needs for a few reasons.
1. it requires a larger enclosure. it would've taken up valuble trunk space. it was really made to rock the block.
2. it requires much more power than I could offer it and I wasn't about to hook up another amp just for a sub. space was an issue here.
3. I've never liked kicker products.. I don't know why. on top of that, the square design was a little too gimmicky for me as well as I didn't like how the speaker surrounds looked. they're probably functional, I don't doubt that, but I didn't care for the way they looked.
So in the end, the L7 is probably a pretty well built sub, but not for me. for that kind of money, I'd sooner buy a JLW6 and use the spare change for tricks.

whoa... slow down .. maybe in NY, they have pricing thats different but out here, a kicker L7 is like almost TWICE the price of an alpine type R.

Yes the L7 12 is expenisive. The best deal I can get for a L7 12 is 320 bucks and for my type R 200 buucks... Well the Solobarics dont require a huge box. But they are not effieicent so u will need one big ass amp to power it.
Miwa I was just like u I really didnt like kicker at all. Now I love it. I put a Kicker Sub in my RSX, But love alpine even more. I was kinda skeptical about the square design to.
A round speaker is always more accurate. For example for some people a 6x9 sounds awesome but over time they lose there accuaracy.
