Subwoofer dead?
Subwoofer dead?
So i bought a 8" JL w3 from a co-worker with a 800 watt Pioneer mono amp, and 20 mins after i installed in on my new Pioneer head unit it stopped working.
So i plugged my friends amp to my sub and still nothing..
Now call me old school but when a sub blows or dies, it still makes some noise.. am i wrong?

i would first check the wiring in the box to see if it came undone from the terminal or speaker. If it was playing fine and wasnt being pushed hard, i wouldnt think it would be blown. Unless the tinsel leads broke or the coil is completly fried then yes it would make some type sounds.

Check the fuses on the amp, etc. Does the amp come on? Does it have a green light of any kind? You may have triggered the protection on the amp
The amp has a blue indicator light that is on.. i checked all the fuses and there fine. I even took the case off the amp. the system board looked fine, no caps peaked, nothing burnt up.
The sub wiring is a little wierd.. i didnt touch it but when i looked at it there was 4 connectors..

do you have another cheap speaker you can hook up to the amp to see if everything is working from there forward.
depends how you blow the sub whether it'll make a sound. Try pushing on the cone lightly, and listen for any scraping, would usually indicate a blown VC.

You can blow a sub without sound because sometimes the amp will shut off. What happened on a Solobaric L7 of mine, it had a "bad" spot on the voice coil and was rubbing against the magnet. You might be able to slightly push on it and see if you can feel it rubbing.

JL is good but distortion will kill any speaker. When distortion occurs your voice coils will heat up at an enormous rate and likely burn up. When you were playing it did it sound clean. Lightly, again ill say LIGHTLY press on the cap in the middle of the sub. if you hear a loud scraping noise the coil is fried, make sure you push lightly and evenly (if you push off centre it may still scrape a little but not as loud). the reason there are 4 wires in the box is because its a dual coil sub, you must check both coils and they should both read around 3 or 4 ohms. if one coil is gone the sub is pretty much garbage. disconnect the sub from the amp and tap a 9volt battery to each coil. red and black. if the speaker "pops" a little it should still be okay. If you need more help PM me, I'm a electronic accessory technician and Ill be glad to help.
Edit: Does your sub smell like burnt electronics??? Believe me youd know if it did.

JL is ok. There are better companies that produce much more better products than JL. They sound cleaner and have better power handling than JL. JL is just overpriced. And no, its not "you get what you pay for."

Check all the settings on the amp, low pass filter, gain, make sure everything is set to make the amp work as a bass amp, also are is it a multichannel amp? Are you bridging it? How are the wires run? Something's gotta set wrong or wired wrong if your friends sub worked fine
