Subs not working??

I have 2 10inch pioneers with a 600watt 2 channel amp sometimes one of the subs will cut off. This will cause the bass to be even louder. Does this meen that the one sub is getting all the 600 watts because the other sub is off? Also, when i turn the music off after running it a while there is a big blast of bass. Is this just the extra electricity running out of the power wire? Last thing, what are some good ways to improve sub performance (stuffing the box, does carpet lessen or improve the sound of the box?) Thanks.

i dont know about your sub problem, but dynamating your trunk and carpeting your box will improve bass reproduction by lessening vibrations

by louder to you mean distorted an noticable shakier? thats what i predicte happen when that much power gets put to one speaker.

eleborate more.

whats the rms on those speakers? lose connections causing the problem? its obviously something that happens because either a connection is loose. what im saying is that its not constant, so something is just loose.

go investigate inspector gadget.

by louder it is not necesarily dostorted, but just more bass, and the speakers are 450 watt max

Eh sounds to me like the pair is playing below the minimum impedence of the amp, and you have some kind of flaky connection somewhere. So, when the one sub is cut out of the chain, the amp quits choking itself and is now playing a proper impedence.

So by fixing the connections, will that clear up the amp choking problems?

Eh no. I was just speculating anyway...

Give us the model of the amp and subs you have. Also, describe how they are wired.

The amp is a Lanzar Vibe 228, the speakers are pioneer TS-W29C. I am using the stock head unit so i had to get a couple of adapters. I had to splice a remote turn on/off adapter into the wiring harness for the head unit. The I had to splice into the rear speakers for the RCA adapter thing. The rest is just basic amp and sub wiring...Ran power cable from battery through firewall and to the back to the amp, then grounded the amp to a piece of the frame (if the amp says to use 8 guage ground wire and I used 10 guage will that effect it much?), the subs wired into the amp, then speaker RCA plugs were plugged in, then remote turn on/off was wired into the amp.

When I go to turn the radio off, or just the car in general, a big blast of bass comes from the subs (not distorted but not a real tune). I was guessing that it was just the extra power running out of the power cable coming from the battery, but I am not sure. Can someone please elaberate on what this could be? Also, what could I do to fix this?

I assume the RCA adapter thing you're referring to is a LOC (Line Output Converter).

Here's your explanation:

When the doors close, or amp thumps on turnoff, it sends a pressure wave towards the speaker the LOC is connected to. This moves the speaker cone and generates electicity back towards the LOC, this energy (signal actually), gets converted to line level and fed to the amplifer. Since the amplifier has capacitors on the power, there is residual stored energy, the amplifier is still working. This signal is then amplified, played through the subs, into the speakers where it is 'fed-back' to the amplifier causing runaway. It's like walking in front of a PA system with a microphone, in this case the speaker the LOC is connected to is the microphone.

Hope this helps.

Just to let you know, this happened to me as well when I had my subs connected through this LOC. I just recently installed an entire audio system so my subs are now connected to my head unit.

To fix this you can either disconnect the rear speakers or you need to add a high pass crossover that eliminates the frequencies reproduced by the subs from the rear speakers. A simple capacitor would provide a 6db cutoff and might be enough to get rid of this problem. You have to pick the Xover freq./capacitor value based on the rear speaker impedence and your sub Xover freq.

Thanks Erik! Im glad that you used the example of the microphone feedback cause I was lost there for a sec.

I decided to just run one of the subs. The amp that I got is 600watt, so I am guessing that it puts out 450watt normally. The speakers are 450watt, so that works better. Right now I just have the wires disconected from one speakers terminal. Should I bridge the amp??

The feedback problem doesnt seem to happen now since I have one sub running but I have a differnent problem. When I run the bass boost control thing high and there is a big bass part, the front speakers pop (sounds like a spark). I searched around in them and didnt find any thing. Is it just that the stock speakers are garbage (non-bose)??
