Sub Boxes
Sub Boxes
I am planning on buying/making (havent decided which one yet) a sealed sub box (for two 12" subs) for my 1996 TL. The boxes that I have seen seem to be too big and would take up a lot of room in the trunk. Does anyone have anyone know the dimensions of their sub boxes or have pictures that could help me? Thanks.
The answer is "it depends". Should be about 1 cubic ft. per sub if you're going sealed (depends on the brand tho). A bit bigger for ported and even bigger than that for bandpass.
I have a box that I built for my TL - I made it for 2 12" Infinity Kappa Perfects. 1 cubic ft. per sub. 31" wide x 14" high x 14" deep bottom x 12" deep top (there are 2 "deep" measurements because the back of the box is angled to wedge right against the seatback). The box isn't completely finished - it needs the front made and could use finishing paint or carpet. Its already screwed and glued (except for the front piece) and sealed with Kilz. Its built solidly...1.5" thick walls (braced).
You can have it for free if you want it...have no use for it and was just going to scrap it.
Ahhh, i see you're from Canada...well, it might be a pain to ship. But let me know (or anyone else for that matter).

The problem in designing the box is the awkward flanges in the trunk if it wasn't for those then it would be easier to design. You mentioned that the box is 31" wide and up against the back seat right.... what did you do to the flanges that come in the way? Thanks in advance...
I dont have a camera to take pics however I have found a pic of the inside of a TLs trunk (not my pic). The flanges I am referring to are those two triangle things towards the back of the trunk.

Yeah, that trunk is definitely a little trickier to do. You could either make notches in the box to fit around those humps in the floor or you could make the bottom of the box out of fiberglass. Making it completely out of wood (MDF) would be a little tricky because you would have to cut some odd shaped / angled pieces. Not hard, just would need some planning and patience. I wouldn't suggest fiberglass unless you have worked with it before or you have some time for experimentation. Fiberglass is not the easiest thing to work with.
You could build a box that holds 1 12" sub w/o having to worry about those contours. I bet a single JL W7 would sound pretty good. It all depends on how much boom you want tho.

It size of the box is dictated by the subs and amp. All subs have a recommended box size and some it depends on the amount of power you are going to use. Check around at your local shops for subs that don't need much box space and go from there.
It always make me smile when I see people looking to do an multiple subs install and wanting to save trunk space. more than 1 sub is useless except in a competition setup ( i mean spl comps) orunless you can't find one subwoofer than will handle all the power you got, or can't find one that have the impedance matching to your amplifier. The fact is that 2 or 3 subs receiving the same power as one is not going to be louder or cleaner if one can handle the power without exceeding Xmax. Sometimes, subs with shorter Xmax and lower power handling can be more efficient but the difference do not worth the space IMO. Do yourself a favor, use only one subwoofer, and built the best enclosure for it. you will save a lot of space and you will not miss bass

The real point here is that most subs reveive too little power. Most people end up over driving their amp to get the bass level they desire and end up clipping the amp. Resulting in blown subs. While a multi sub set up is not just meant for DB Drags it might be that everyone should put more power to their subs.
reply to i'm batman; I see your point and I think the same way. my point is that on todays market, you can get a single sub that handle a ton of power, a single amp and a single amp that push a ton of power. and one sub that handle a ton of power is not really more expensive than 3 handling less power, but take much less space, and if space is not an issue, then get a bigger sub instead of many. There's so much myth about one size hitting harder than another and and one being tighter than another. people don't realize that it's 99% in the box design and in the amplifier choice. and people don't realize that a larger sub can take advantage of a larger enclosure and play louder with the same power than a smaller one, and if the amplifier can control it, it won't be less tight or less hard. I can't count how many times I saw people adding a second sub (in order to get more bass) and screwing their setups because it was preventing them for getting full power out of their amp, resulting in less loud bass, or heavy clipping to get the same bass level.
