Sub box smells nasty.

I purchased a pair of Memphis Subs (used) that also came in a Bbox dual 12 inch ported enclosure. I took the subs out to rewire and check everything, and the subs are working like a charm, and have for the past 6 months. However when I did this, I smelled the inside of the box. The box smells like nasty feet, fish, and a few other things. I have dealt with it because I had it in my previous high school car, but I now have a beautiful 2004 Acura TSX. I do not want this sub box making my car smell all funny. Is there a way to get rid of the smell? I have tried vinegar and baking soda, letting it sit in the sun, febreeze, and a few other "tricks". Would painting the insides (that I can reach) help hide or get rid of the scent? Anyone have experience with smelly MDF sub boxes? A new box is currently out of the discussion, due to expenses of college (Go Huskies!)
