Sub and amp question
Sub and amp question
I saw an add in Best Buy today for $300 you get 2 10" sony x plod subs and a 1200 watt 2 channel amp plus a box. Would this make a big differnece to my stock sound system? Will the audio system sound "out of tune"? And if i unplug the 6X9 will it add more power to the other speakers? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
To answer the easier question, unplugging your 6x9's will not cause a shift in power to the rest of the speakers.
Next, I highly doubt that Sony Xplod amp puts out 1200 watts as well. Those are probably the PEAK ratings and you won't be hitting peak while listening to regular music. Try and find out what the RMS rating on that amp is. RMS being what is the constant power (watts) an amp is putting out.
The most important thing you can do when installing subwoofers is to focus on the installation.
1. Make sure you have a box properly designed for your subwoofers.
2. Make sure you have a nice amplifier that supplies clean and steady power.
3. Make sure the wiring between the stereo and amplifier is routed in a way that will not introduce noise into your system.
4. Set your gains to only play subwoofer frequencies. Some people lowpass their crossovers to only play notes from 100 Hz down. I prefer to only play notes from 70 Hz down using a 12/Db slope. Its all subject to personal tastes, but just don't cross your subwoofer over at like 250 or something.
Do a search on here and you will find a wealth of information. I suggest you also go over to sites like www.crutchfield.com and www.sounddomain.com/shopping to find some other alternatives. From personal experience, I recommend Image Dynamics and Oz Audio when it comes to subwoofers. As for amps, just find an amp that will put out the necessary wattage. If you want to run 2 10" subs then I think you need to find something that will put out at least 400 RMS watts x 1 bridged.
