The stock Bose Premium sound system consists of four 6-inch paper and cloth speakers in the doorsa and a 9-inch Bose sub in the rear deck.
Here's a pic of a stock 6" Bose next to my 5.25" Infinity Kappa that I installed in the rear doors. I have 6.5" Kappa 3-ways in the front doors.

I've always liked Infinity's sound - had their big home spkrs for a long time and used Kappas in my other cars. I have them running off a Phoenix Gold ZX475ti, about 75 watts per spkr. Check my sig for my setup

I am not an audio expert, but I have to admit that I didn't realize that the stock is only a one-way thing. What a POC!

Well look at them You know the TL Bose system sounds outstanding compared to just about every stock system I've heard. You know, a nice surround sound that doesn't distort - even at full volume.

But I like to feel the sound where the mids pound your legs and have nice, crisp highs. When I first added the extra equipment I used the Alpine EQ and PG Amp settings to tune the sound just right - now the sound is dialed in. Gets very loud and sounds amazing - thanks to my Phoenix Gold Titanium series amps and Alpine EQ.

TL DADDY,

What's the depth clearance in the front and rear doors for speakers? Did you have to use a spacer? Thanks.

Check out the pic above. See the adapter/spacer that I made from MDF? I made it 1" thick so it matches the 1" thick plastic adapter that holds the Bose spkrs. The Bose spkrs are just under 2.5" deep, leaving 1.5" inside the door. The Infinity 5.25" rear speakers are 2.5" deep and the 6.5" front speakers are 2.75" deep. So I made all the adapters 1" thick. Any speaker deeper than 3" is going to hit the window when it rolls down.

6.5" speakers should fit. I could have installed 6.5" all around, but used the smaller 2-way spkrs in the rear for fill.

TL DADDY,

Just left the audio store, and was told that I could not/should not replace the Bose speakers because the sound wound be worse. Told that each speaker had a built-in amplifier (kinda 901ish) and 2 or 3-way replacement speakers would not accurately reproduce the amplified signal. Help! Don't have a clue...

Don't go back to that shop again!

The only speaker that's amplified is the sub - it has it's own 100 watt amp behind the rear seat. The door spkrs are not amplified other than by the Bose head unit.

But I didn't just hook my new Infinity speakers to the existing wires, maybe that's what the shop meant? They couldn't just connect new speakers to the existing wires and make it sound good.

I spliced and soldered a 4-channel line out converter to the eight Bose speaker leads and then added EQ, amps, new sub and new speakers. You'll need a line output converter in order to connect aftermarket equipment to your Bose.

Man,

You mean, I just can't replace the POC paper speakers with better ones? I'm not an electronics buff, but do like premium sounds. Also, I'm adding Video on my Navi. and want full range speakers (3-way) throughout interior. Help!!

TLDaddy,

Did you use the stock wiring then to connect to the Infinity's? I don't have a TL yet, but I plan on installing a system when I get the TL-S. In my Integra, I had a ***** of a time running the aftermarket wiring between the frame and the doors.

MCD - No, I ran all new Stinger 16 guage spkr wire for the door spkrs (and 12 ga wire for the new sub). But my wiring goes from the spkrs to the amps in the trunk. And yes it's a pain to run the wires - use some silcone lube to help the wires slide thru the door boots.

whitediamondnav - The Bose wiring is like a 22 ga. Very thin and you have to cut the stock connectors off (cuz they have a weird hook-up to the Bose stereo) in order to connect new spkrs.

I am interested in just adding 6 1/2 inch Pioneer 3-ways (TS-A1665) in the doors. They have a mounting depth of 2 1/4 inches. Do I still need to add a LOC to the Bose unit in order to just install these speakers? Don't want to replace the Bose subwoofer.

Do you think the difference between the 3-way and 2-way speakers would be noticable when hooking them up to the Bose unit?

thanks

I know this is a really really late reply to this post Just hope our knowledegeable TL Daddy could clear this up. Mine is a 2001 TL (not Type S) I'm not sure what size my stock sub is, but after measuring it, it looks like a 8 inch. I have seen rich's 2002 TL got a Pioneer 10" freeair sub into his original 9" stock Sub. So i guess i won't be able to do the same with my 2001 TL then ?

Thanks,
Kenneth

That crappy shop is just too lazy to work on your car...they dont want to work for your money and they are WRONG!!! I bet the store was Car Toys...two different shops told me that and they said if I took my stock headunit out my NAVI wouldnt work...they were wrong about both. My system is great, Im glad I finally found a quality shop.

BTW you can fit 5.25 or 6.5 inch speakers in the doors. If you use 6.5, you will have to cut some - no big deal, just watch for the depth. Mine are 6.5 in the front and rear - no probs at all.

Dear Guest,

I wouldn't recommend using the Pioneer TS-1665 - they really aren't much better than your standard BLOSE stock speakers. They may have better highs but their mids and mid-bass are awful. I had originally boughten them for my Honda Accord and they hardly handled 50 watts continuous power in the front (I don't even listen to my music that loud). I ended up getting JL Audios and they kick ass - some of the other folks on here also like Focals, Infinitis and MB Quartz. I sold my accord and got a TL - and again I bought JL Audios - they don't disappoint..

You can go to Ebay and purchase a BRAND NEW pair of components for about $150 and coaxials for $100 - less than what you might pay for the Pioneers at Best Buy!
