Speaker upgrade questions.
Speaker upgrade questions.
I'm not sure if this can be done with the stock amp/xover but has anyone just bypassed the rear door speakers and ran Alpine S (or other brand) 6x9's full range in the rear deck. I'm assuming the wires/channels to the rear door 6.5's are full range and if they are bypassed the wires can go to the 6x9's full range. That way you could benefit from the better 3 way 6x9's playing full range. After that I was thinking of taking the existing low freq wires/channels that go to the existing 6x9's subs and just hook them into a single 8-10" sub placed in the rear deck between where the 6x9's would be. Is there room in the rear deck for this to work? Will trunk space be sacrificed much? Would it make the system sound unbalanced sonically? I'd be replacing the front 6.5's with some better component speakers as well. Basically, I'd just have to re route some wires from the rear doors to the rear deck, use the existing speaker cutouts for everything but the additional 8-10" sub that I would have a spot cut out in the rear deck for. I'll run all of this off of the existing amp but maybe upgrade that later as well with a better quality multi-channel amp.
Thanks for any input on if this would work,
Scott

According to several people, the amp controls the frequency, so if you take the output cable from head unit straight into your 6x9, then yeah, I believe you can run them full range. However, the output power may not be powerful enough without the amp. you may have to add another amp to power your 6x9.

As previously posted none of the speakers recieve full signal. The front door speakers have a treble roll off due to in dash tweeters. The rear door speakers have a bass roll off due to the rear deck subs. So basically not much one can do except rewire and add new amp. I have been told by installers that the HU signal may not be strong enough to do this; they warned about getting signal from OEM amp to LOC to aftermarket amp. Could 'burn up' the OEM amp.
i got some time today to mess around with system, and i found that when you fade the speakers all the way to front it does indeed sound better, but with less bass tho. With no fading the system has more bass but was alittle more muddy. Someone should try this and tell me what you think.
AsahiToro - I too thought about placing an 8 or 10 inch sub b/w the two 6x9s, but I dont think it would fit. Well, it might fit but there are some rods or springs b/w the two 6x9s and I dont have enough balls to mess w/ them. The trunk might not open properly. Ill just add a 10 in some corner. Currently Im going to upgrade the front speakers, and Im gonna add an amp. After I finish the install Ill post some pics and my impressions. Should be done around mid march when Im on spring break.

Thanks for the replies everyone,
That's good info about the amp/xover points and also about fitting a sub in the back deck (I was thinking along the lines of the 04 TL rear deck setup). I guess if I upgrade the amp/xovers later then maybe I can be more flexible on my speaker choices/uses. Are the rear doors coaxial speakers? Would getting 2 way coaxial speakers there be a waste assuming I stick with the stock amp for now? Should I just get a pair of better 6.5" non coaxial drivers? I've heard that this line of speakers is very good for the money:

From all of the reading I have been doing here and elsewhere it sounds like the first, best upgrade options (if I don't want to go full out with a new amp, etc.) is to upgrade the fronts with a quality 6.5" component set and replacing the 6x9's. There doesn't seem to be a big selection in terms of 6x9 subs out there. KEF makes the 'Racetrack' 6x9 bass drivers for their home speakers:

I wonder if I could get a hold of a pair of those if they would work in this application well? I can't give up any trunk space and want to avoid any major cutting (if any cutting at all) so I'd like to use the existing 6x9 cutouts if I can.
Edit:
If I add the snhond3 unit to get aux inputs will it give me the ability to have dual aux inputs? I'd like to add XM (like BassMechanics setup) but I want to go direct in (not FM Mod) and also I'd like a pair of RCA jacks somewhere else (inside the console? next to the XM unit in the 'not an ashtray' compartment?) so that I can hook up my iPod easily when needed.
Edit#2
Has anyone heard the Image Dynamics Chameleons? Will they fit in the doors *easily* or are they too deep? It looks like I can get a pair of 6.5 components for the front and a pair of 6.5 mid bass drivers (or coaxials) for the rear doors and still be in my price range ($500ish). That would leave me just needing some quality 6x9's. Since all they play is low freq's, I want the best 6x9's for that freq range for $300 or under. Down the road maybe I'll upgrade the amp, speaker wiring and the 6x9's to 8 or 10"' subs but for now this should be a good start.
Thanks again for everyone's input,
Scott

Thanks tuan209,
I read on those forums that they are good subs. For that price especially. I'd rather not spend more on a coaxial speaker if the tweeter would never get used. Maybe a pair of those with some kind of ported enclosure underneath them would be the ticket. Buying the drivers, having them installed and enclosures built would still probably be less $$ than most of the 6x9 coaxials mentioned here and sound a lot better. I don't have my TSX yet (should be here in a about a week) so I don't know what if any small enclosure would work inside the trunk. Here's the thread where I got the idea:
