setting gains, please help!

before i get flamed, i do know about the two procedures using a voltmeter and adjusting the gain, or to crank it up till i hear distortion.

The thing is, when i use the volt meter, i most i could read is 4 volts at the highest gain for my sub amp, and 25 mV for my speakers. which is completely off from this web site

http://www.subwoofertools.com/forum/setgain.asp

also, when i cranked it up, i never heard any distortion that i can tell. yea, i am using a 80HZ and 1KHZ test tones.

this is my current config.
Eclipse CD343
2 jl 12 W3v3
PPI D1000/1 500watts x 1 channel
PPI PC4800 100 watts x 4 channel

the sub amp is cranked to max without distortion, and the speakers is cranked about 3/4 of the way.

Is this because my headunit has a 5V preout? i know eclipse makes pretty good head units, is that y? also, when i was setting up gains for my subs, i had my non-fader output set at 0. But how much could i crank it up? (ranges 0-16)? i have it at 10 right now and it sounds great. just dont want to push it too hard.

also, what should i set the QBASS to on the PPI amp?

there are soo many variables and i dont know how to exactly set it to get the maximum output with out blowing my subs.
Any help would be great! thanks in advance
