1.) yes........it depends on the head unit and how much money you are willing to spend.
2.)yes........its your best bet to keep the stock head unit and replace everything else.

basicly what he said but i will go into a little more detail....
1. you can replaced the stock headunit and still be able to use the steering wheel remotes if your new headunit has a ir remote control... here check this link out for the part that you will need...
http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...27SWIX&o=m&a=0
2. you can add a sub to the stock radio with little to no problem but if it was me i would rather replace the whole system... but honestly you can just replaced the head unit and use the metra wiring kit for the 98 and up honda and still use all the stock speakers and the sub with a little modification....

replacing everyything but the head unit is a waste. i tried keeping the stock head unit and changed the door speakers, rear deck speaker and added subs. sure it sounds better than stock but there is NO comparison whatsoever compared to putting in aftermarket radio. to me, changing everything but the head unti is like buying a home theater system and playing VHS tapes...sure it sounds good, but you dont know how much better it will be with DVD's until you hear the difference.
