Replace stock sub with cheap speaker to get sound from navi?

Im going to be replacing the factory head unit, which means I'll lose use of the bose sub and the sound from the nav system. Can I just put a cheap 5.25" speaker in where the stock sub is (with something to make it fit / stay in there), and hook that up to the nav system to keep the voice?

You need a self powered speaker(s) for that.

what about the world's smallest sh**tiest amp? I imagine I could find an amp for less than $50 that would power one speaker with the nav voice (wont care how good it sounds)

Here is the Pinout I downloaded thanks to typesdragoon, it looks like there is a low level signal you can pick up from the navi unit for the voice (Route Guidance) You can try it with a small amp to see if it works.

Wait a minute! I was going to take out the stock sub and replace with an after market 8" sub to complement other speaker upgrades. Is it true that the stock sub is the only voice for the Nav? Would it work to add an aftermarket sub on an amp and still get voice?

I know a similar question was asked earlier, but not sure the situation was the same. Also, I was told by a local shop that 6.5" speakers were what was needed in all 4 doors. Does anyone know how deep they can be and is the 6.5 size accurate?

I have an '02 TL-Type S

Thanks!

No, the sub is just a sub and no navi voice comes from it. The Navi voice comes to the drivers front speaker I believe.

Moat,

Thanks, I went out and did the old-tech test of turning it on and sticking my ear on the sub. When the Nav voice came on I confirmed that it did nto come from the sub. So, I assume I can replace that sub and be OK. Other than it looks like the bracked for the trunk lid spring will be in the way.

yeah leeps I just wanted to take out the stock sub (since it wont be working with a new head unit) and put in a small speaker, then have a small amp and have the nav voice come out through that (since I'll lose the nav voice when getting a new head unit).

moat - thanks! that was just what I was looking for, I'll give it a shot when I get a new head unit.
