Remote Control won't Lock

Hello, I have a 1999 TL.

My remote control won't lock the car. When I press the lock button, there is a red light from the remote sensor, but there is no sound, nor will it lock. I can open the trunk lid and the unlock works with the remote though.

What seems to be the problem?

I don't know much about car electricity, but I do have some knowledge about electronics in general, so you can go into depth instead of using layman terms.

Also, I don't know if this will help, but this car was in an accident sometime. The passenger side door will fully close like it's supposed to, but on the instrument panel, it says the door is open.

Thanks everyone!

Sounds like the passenger door may be the issue. Did the accident occur and then you started having this issue? Or was it locking after the accident? I know if everything is not closed correctly including the hood, the car will not lock or arm with the remote.

Also, you could try this. Push the door sensor in with your hand that's located on the passenger door jamb and try locking and arming with remote. I just tried it, and I was able to lock and arm with the door open, by doing this. That way you know that either the door is not catching that sensor right, or maybe the sensor is bad all together.

Thanks Buffalo. The passenger side door is the problem. The remote locking works only if I click the lock button while pushing the door hard.

Is it big job like re-framing the car? I just bought the car!

Thanks again for your time and consideration.

Your very welcome, this is a great site/community and I've been helped a lot here!

Hmmm...I would think that the door was not hung right when the collision work was done. Were you aware of the accident prior to buying the car? Contact the seller, maybe it was recent enough that you can take it back in to the collision shop and have it hung correctly. If it was a dealer that you purchased it from, I would take it right back and have them fix it and I wouldn't accept anything less.

Does the door alignment to the front fender look off when the door is closed?

Is there a lil rubber boot on the door jamb sensor?

If your really out of luck, I can't imagine that it would cost that much to have the door aligned to that it closes correctly? Any carfax for this car?

In the mean time, you can maybe come up with a way to keep that door jamb sensor pushed in so that your able to lock the doors, and enable the alarm on the car.

I temporarily fixed it. I attached two pennies on the door on the opposite side of the sensor with JB Weld.

Thanks for your help!
