Question about the JL Audo 500/1 amp

I recently hooked up a 500/1 amp. The power coming from this thing is awesome. The only gripe I have is that it makes a hissing sound when turned on. I unplugged the rca inputs and this hissing is still there. I played around with the eq and controls but still there. I was wondering if that low hissing sound (like static) is normal for this amp or did I get a bad amp. Overall, the bass sounds good from this amp. Just a bit concerned. Any comments will be appreciated... Thanks

Try turning the gain down on the amp. You might just have it set to high.

Is the hissing present with the car on or off? If the hissing is there with car off, I would guess it is in the amp. If when the car is on only, I would check the routing of the power and signal wires.

The hissing is only on when power is on. I'm running my power wire in the left door sill. The signal is coming from the right rear where the blose amp is (sub tapping). I'll hook up a different amp and see if I get that noise.

You are tapping into the factory amp harness? If the other amp does the same, about the only thing it could be is either the power cable down the left picking up something or where you have tapped the factory plug is leaking something. Not sure how to fix the factory problem. Are you using the factory head unit?

I ran my 300/4 using the same power wire, ground and tapped signal inputs. Whalla, no noise. Silence. So I guess it was the amp. I called JL today to return the amp for service. Oh well, I guess 150 watts to the sub (bridged 75*2 at 8ohms) is better than nothing. In no comparison to 500 watts of digital power though It'll be 3 weeks until I see that baby again.

Hey acurax2, thanks for all of your suggestions in trying to help me solve this mysterious problem. Greatly appreciated!

No problem Doc.

I have a similar setup as you. I am running MTX amps. The 6304 and the 6500d. My 6500d went a couple of weeks ago and I am expecting it back tomorrow. I have a single 10" Kicker L7 and I could not even use it with the 6304. 100 watts @ 2 ohms compared to a tested 650 watts. 100 watts would not even hardly move the 10" beast.

Glad you found the problem.
