i was wondering if it was possible to get an aftermarket headunit BUT
still keep every prompt, commands, and button on the navi. OR does it just make the cd changer useless??

You could get a single DIN headunit with a line-in and put it in the storage pocket. A guy name mercman on here makes some balun's and wiring harness for the balanced signal.
You might ask mercman to make you a wire harness and balun with short cables. You could use the input generated into the line-in on your new HU. This probably gives you an amp upgrade over the stock. I think there is a harness to adapt to the stock speaker wiring too without cutting anything....

so any single din headunit will work? at first i didnt want an aftermarket hu, but i changed my mind in hoping it will "defeat" a problem i been having. anyway
so single din headunit,
aftermarket amp,
and new speaker wires..
i can do all this and still keep my factory prompts from my navi? (i.e. ac controls, voice cmds n so on)
can this be done at places like bestbuy or anything like that?

i was basically saying your entire stock setup could be a line-level source for an aftermarket head unit. a line-in is a required feature on the new head unit. not every head unit has this. you will have to use mercman's harness and balun. there are threads about some face plate adapter for the acura mp3 cd player being able to hold a head unit with slight modification. search for that and mercman's thread on the right way to bypass the stock amp.

yeah mercman been helping me a little bit on this problem..
i had a thread on my problem in the audio forum "4 speakers not working"
basically only my two front speakers work and none of the rear ones do. mermen told me to do a check with a DVM but i dont have access to one and if its a bad head unit i figure i might as well get an aftermarket one rather then ordering a new factory hu for probably tripple the price.

The NAV prompts and hands free both work through and by muting the factory HU. If you replace the HU you will loose this function.
If you can’t get a DVM you have two or three options.
Take the car to a shop and ask them to do the tests that I gave you.
Pull the HU and send it out to a repair facility (check the internet)
Use my harness and a new amp to build a two channel system with or without a sub. Or, build a four channel system without a fade adjustment.
One other thing you could try is a power cycle of the Radio. Make sure that you have your code to unlock it before doing this. Just pull the fuse(s) and wait a few minutes.

That’s the control on the HU that adjusts the front and rear speaker volume levels. Did you check to see if it is centered? Press the audio button, then select Sound from the LCD display. You will see Bass, Treble, Balance and Fade. Set the Fade for the center. You can also push the “tune” knob to get to that screen and to select to function.
Most “purists don’t use rear “fill” speakers because it distorts the stereo image. A suggested system for you (Assuming you can’t fix your rear channel problem) would be a good set of components up front and a sub in the trunk. You can run the whole thing from a four channel (JL 300/4) amp with the rear channels bridged for the sub. With this system you won’t have any rear fill speaker to fade to.

The HU will feed the aftermarket amp via my harness (front channels only) and you wire your new component speakers directly to the aftermarket amp. Connect a sub if you want one and you will have a killer system.
If you don’t want a sub then get a two-channel amp. If you want a sub go with a four-channel amp that can bridge channels 3+4 (3 channel mode)
Lot’s of good info on speakers and how to install them as well as some custom sub installs, start searching.
