Portable car navigation systems: Magellan or Garmin?
I have been wanting to buy a portable gps navigation system and have a roadtrip coming up so now would be a good time. I've read reviews on amazon.com for both the Magellan RoadMate 700 and the Garmin StreetPilot 2620 but I still can't decide which to get. I'd like to know if any of you have tried out one of these navi systems and how they've worked for you. Function is my number one priority, since I'm buying this only for giving me correct directions. Please also suggest other brands/models you may have in mind but please stick to portables only since none of my 3 cars have navi. Thanks!
I've had both the Garmin and Magellan. I like the Garmin WAY better! Better software and more options, in my opinion. With the Garmin, you can choose to display a TON of fields! Speed, Average Speed, etc.... I didn't have those choices with the Magellan. Also, I live in Texas...Magellan wouldn't route to my sister's house! The Garmin had no problems.
Hope this helps.

Someone mentioned this item on a previous thread and liked it more than the Garmin and Magellan.

More info found on the TomTom Go 300.

I have the Magellan 300. I think it is the same as the 700. The software for the direction is horrible and stupid. It wants you to drive all over the places before you get to where you want to go. I don't follow the computer's direction at all... <hmm. can someone remind me why I need one of these GPS' please???>
On the other hand, if you just want to use it as a map, then it is pretty good. You can zoom in and out very fast.

I've had them all (but the TOM TOM but have seen some reviews and they were ok but not great) and the Garmin 2610 blows away everything....by far the best I've ever owned, I went 2500 miles in one week going to baseball games and didnt get lost once!
I was flipping the TV yesterday and saw a Nav system on Home shopping network (or something like that) and it looked like a regular portable DVD player (the kind with the screen that folds up and down). It had touch screen, voice directions and all of that and it also played cds, dvds, etc. Looked to be pretty neat.
