Polyfill and Subwoofer Enclosures...

I recently received a JL 10W6v2 from a friend and sent the speaker in to get the surround replaced. When i took out the subwoofer from its sealed enclosure, i noticed that the box was crammed with the white polyfill material. There is even a small black patch where the magnet touches the filler, im guessing due to the heat. My question is: is all that polyfill necessary? Maybe, the excessive polyfill was the reason why teh surround tore in the first place?

After further investigation, I noticed that the box was not made to the specifications listed on the JL Audio website for this particular subwoofer. I am guessing that this might have played a factor in the sound and tearing of the surround. Am i safe to assume so?

Very unlikely that the smaller box would cause the surround to tear, but over time I guess it could if that sub was blasted all the time. are you sure the surround wasnt damaged in some other way also - like if it had a hole in it from a screwdriver or something. that small hole over time would rip much larger.

You put the polyfill in a sealed box to reduce the "standing waves" that the back of the sub creates inside the box. this is supposed to increase output and sound quality. though you arent supposed to jam it in there, a light fill will do the job.

yeah that makes sense. No the surround wasn't damaged before hand, but from what i know this seems to happen to the W7's and the W6v2's and JL replaces it, but since this one is out of warranty, i am getting it done locally. Maybe if i take some of the poly-fill out it might make a difference.

interesting...are the surrounds on the new w6's or w7's stitched to the cone? if not I can kinda understand, cause on my subs they are stitched to the cone. Ya you should put the fill in lightly and how much smaller is the box than recommended? its not hard to build a sealed box, if your current one is off quite a bit (more than 25%) then just build a new one

this must be one of the older W6v2's then, because it looks like the surround is glued to the cone. the box right now is 17x12x8

the JL specs are : 14.5x12x10.25

should i build a new box?

I doubt you will hear a diff with the polyfill, but feel free to experiment. Touching the magnet is not a deal and don't worry about it.

I am not going to do the work to figure your enclosure volume and JL's recommended enclosure volume. But YOU should. Remember that 1728 cu in = 1 cu ft. Figure out the enclosure volume you have and the enclosure volume JL recommends, and figure out your % variation before building a new box, OK?
