Talking Pioneer AVIC-D1 in 2002 TL-S

Hey guys, I picked up a 2002 TL-S type last night from the dealer, decided to hold off on the navigation, because I figure I can do it better myself and I wanted the D1 instead of the navi they offered, even though ive heard its Alpine.. my question is..

How difficult/expensive is it to put the D1 in the 2002 TL? Im assuming I would have to take out the 6-disc to put the other one in its place? Also, do they make mounting kits for this or is the only option the streeteffectz $250 face plate? If anyone has done this or knows of a post where this was done, please let me know, I *REAAALLY* wanna do this! Thanks guys!

I would have bought the TLS with Navigation if I had the choice.

a lot of people make a double din kit out there, you could just do it yourself. I made one for myself. I'll have pics up in two days putting my d1 back in my car. I had to remove the AVIC-Z1 so they could bring it to CES=)
which I'll be there to check out.

yeah you can use the stock metal brackets that are in the car already i know its only two screws on each side and they are in different positions but you can use those to mount it in. As well some people make a double din dash kit for the CL/TL that has a lip so you can use the cage that the D1 comes with.

I had no problems mounting the D1 in my car with the double din kit I made, it was just a cover, just like the one streeteffectz makes its not used for mounting the actual D1 in anyway its just to fill the space.

Also, does anyone have any pictures of what this thing looks like while playing MP3's? does it have animation, does it have a cool picture, does it have wall-papers? Ive searched the net to no avail for this information. Also, what is being done so passangers can watch DVD while driving, without having rear-screens.. thanks for the info guys

no, it doesn't have anything flashy or cool looking while playing mp3s or music, which is quite unfortunate. I usually have it set to navigation 95% of the time since looking at the mp3 screen is rather boring.

I was only able to mount the d1 w/ streeteffectz kit with 1 screw on each side. The folding down faceplate part of the d1 would not open when I had both screws in since it would catch on the StreetEffectz trim kit.

Here it is, my own custom dash kit I made and put in for my avic-d1

I know u see that white part on the bottom, i had to modify this one a lil from the avic-z1, for the motorization clearance issues. So I am fixing it so the bottom will be straight again and paint it again.

everyones a critic. There was no way to get the exact color match, i had 3 vinyl repair guys look at it, theres flake in the stock color. So to blend as close as you can to that satin finish with a bit of flake, you do that little rough texture, i mean close up you can really see, but from far it looks normal.
anywayz like i said, i had to file it down so i'm gonna have to pull it out again, fibreglass it again and get it repainted again.
unless anyone of you know where i can buy a can of honda interior paint in a can that is an exact match.

Great job on that piece. Why not paint your entire dash so they have the same tone and texture?

thanks, I don't want to paint the whole thing, it just wouldn't feel right, its easy to do. but then i'd have to paint around the cluster, and climate controls without painting over the words for the buttons and then the whole centre console with cupholder and so on.
