New alternator
New alternator
first what is the amps on a 2001 TL-p. I have 2 amps a 500 watt for the bass and 300 for my mids and highs. I have 800 watts RMS power in the car. I have a one farad cap and was wondering my light still dim. I mean they dont dim as bad as they use to when i didnt have the cap. At higher volumes of around 27 (35 is the max volume on my alpine deck). I thought a cap would get rid of the diming light problem at any volume levels. How much does a higher up amp alternator run. And also am I doign any damge to the electrical system.
That setup you’re running shouldn’t be dimming your lights. 800 watts is your max power which I doubt you use. Lets say you do though, then your drawing about 55 amps. Most likely its less than that. The stock alt in my first gen 3.2 TL is 110 amps. Yours is probably around that same number. If it is, then you should have enough power. I would check the ground. Make sure its not too long and make sure its grounded to chassis.
For a good high amp alt, call up Ohio Generator. They wanted $400 for my first gen alt re-wound to 200 amps.

i have the same problem, the only thing that is dimming is my alpine headunit, i have a 2 farad cap also. Nothing else dims except for the headunit. I learned to live with it and it doesn't really bother me any more. If theres a way to fix that please respond.
dnd2984, well you might need a new alternator after all. Like I said, Ohio Generator can do it for you. They do great work at a reasonable price.
marinalk1, how many amps do you have connected to the remote signal from the headunit? Maybe they're drawing too much power. I think its okay for you to use a low voltage relay as a remote signal using the radio as a trigger but I'm not sure. You can also try grounding the radio somewhere else.

BTW, I found another place for high amp alternators. They’ll do my first gen alt to 180 amps for $250.00! Its www.mralternator.com Its not listed on the site. Just give them a call and ask for Tom. I don’t know if the workmanship is as good as Ohio Generator though.
