Need help with Peripheral PXAMG/iSimple
'05 TSX no navi.
PXAMG firmware version .26
iPod video with up to date firmware.
XM disconnected
I just installed it last weekend and I'm having a problem I haven't seen on this board.
The iPod works perfectly fine in Aux 1 (Able to control iPod directly) mode although the screen says "XM Loading" all the time. Not sure what it's supposed to read.
In iPod mode the head unit screen still says "XM Loading" and I can't get to the browse menus without having to hit the XM button again or switching to FM then back. At that point the track time displays for about 1 second instead of "XM Loading" and if I'm quick to hit 6 on my CD changer I can get into the browse menus. The browse menus time out very quickly if I stop inputting. As soon as I do it goes back to displaying "XM Loading" and I can't browse again.
When I first installed I had the iPod plugged into the wrong port (and the problems were different) and I have since moved it to the Aux port furthest from the dip switches (all off), unplugged the PXAMG from the car for 8 minutes, rebooted my iPod 4 or 5 times, and shorted the capacitor on the PXAMG once after leaving it unplugged from the car for 10 minutes.
I sent Peripheral a message when I had the iPod plugged into the wrong port but they still haven't called me back.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I don't have a phone number but I did contact them by email got a pretty quick reply (next day).
I also have a 2005 non-navigation. I don't know what you mean by "XM disconnected". I have XM running normally and my Isimple works correctly. I also don't understand your description about running your Ipod at the Aux1 input. When I press the XM button on the radio, I can select
Sat-Ipod-Aux1-Aux2. My Ipod works when I select Ipod. Sat gets you XM. I have not used Aux1 or Aux2.
I believe that I have the same firmware version you have.

I didn't renew my XM subscription so when I disconnected it from the HU I just left it off.
When I press the XM button I can using the tuning knob to scroll through iPod/Aux1/Aux2. I don't see Sat. Aux 1 mode is the ability to use the iPods click wheel on the iPod itself (foresaking all other types of control). I should've written that the iPod works as intended in Aux 1 input mode.
I think I have a bad unit. I'm also reaching out to Autotoys.com where I got it from. I still haven't heard from Peripheral which really sucks.

Either you have a bad unit or the fact that you don't have active XM is causing "SAT" to not appear.
Thanks for the little info about AUX1, I didn't realize if you chose that input the Ipod could be operated with its controls. I thought the only choice was "IPOD" and then you used the radio or steering wheel controls. That is a very useful piece of info since sometimes I'd rather use the Ipod itself for selecting music.

"...sometimes I'd rather use the Ipod itself for selecting music. " - Yeah, if you have a whole lotta music the HU is not the quickest way to browse. I"m hoping to get the unit exchanged with Autotoys. I've been reading about the PXAMG and the Dice for quite some time. I went with Peripheral because they'd been around a bit longer. I'm really surprised by this out of the box failure and the general novelty of this failure. I'm also surprised that I haven't heard from Peripheral via their own contact page or via Acurazine which I've seen them all over.

Another piece of info,
Brand-new Ipods will not charge with the Isimple. It has to do with the fact that the Isimple supplies Firewire voltage for charging and brand-new Ipods only charge with USB voltage. A possible solution is a Scosche (http://scosche.com/products/productID/1667) adapter that converts Firewire charging to USB charging. Unfortunately it's $30. But I am happy with the direct audio connection and control of the IPod with the steering wheel buttons that I may get one. It's just coming available so I haven't tried it yet.
I got a pretty quick response from Peripherals. I asked about the fact that the Ipod does not shut off when the ignition is shut off. They told me that was normal. The Ipod is paused and continues to charge off the battery. They recommended disconnecting the Ipod when turning the car off.

My understanding is that Apple has planned to switch completely to USB charging for awhile. They continued to support Firewire voltages until they changed to chipsets that no longer do Firewire. It is also my understanding that all new IPods have completely abandoned Firewire charging capabilities. The only Ipods I have used are a 2g nano 8Gb and a 4g nano 16Gb(brand new). The 2g charges fine but the 4g does not. The controls work fine on all versions.
(I have a Klipsch iGroove speaker system that has the same problem).

Yes, they sent me a firmware update on 10/17. When I re-flashed it everything worked fine. I couldn't get any information on the firmware version. I think they had me flash back to .25 but I couldn't tell from the file name.

Coo. Mine works good so far. It's kinda painful to navigate through my non-navi but XM compatible interface. I've got a ton of music and you only see one line at a time when controling through the HU. If you want to use the controls on the iPod then you lose the track/artist display capability. Yeah, it's a system hack but I'm having fun with it and think it's a pretty good value. Once I replace my muddy ass door speakers with some Infinity Kappas I'll be all squared away.

I have the PXMAG working with my iphone 3G. The song title and artist appears on the Navi screen, however the display above the stereo unit (the display that shows the clock and temp says "LOADING" instead of the artist names. Any suggestions on how to correct this?

Oliver!!!
Hey all, could someone please email me the .25 firmware? I updated to .36 and all I get is XM Loading, same as everyone else who did. As much as I wish I had seen this before I did the update, it came with the Jan 2008 firmware, so it wouldn't have worked anyway

You don't want .25. Trust me. It needs to be reset 100X more than .36. We just have to accept the fact that the PXMAG/Isimple is running on some mediocre software from a development team that is to lazy to test/or correct bugs. As a software engineer i wish i could get my hands on the source code for this device and make this run the way it should.

what are the steps to updating the firmware? i plug in the usb cable to the pxamg and the computer doesnt say anything about it being connected. what step am i missing? is there a power cable i should also be using?

There are several things you need to do for a firmware update. Specific directions are given at
http://www.pac-audio.com/firmware/iSimple/index.html
Roughly the steps are the following
1. download the file
2. move the switches on the gateway (to ON)
3 .check serial number of gateway and steps vary with serial number (some need a power supply; some don't)
4. connect USB cable to gateway and computer
5. install driver in Windows; load firmware file
6. move switches on the gateway (to OFF)
